Edit scenes, allow player choice, have multiple characters appear on screen, and even have music/voice all within your creation! Visual Novel Maker allows the beginning game creator a base set up that they can tweak to their liking and create rich visual novels in the process. The only thing that you’ll question is what story can you make?
Visual Novel Maker doesn’t have a story. Instead, you are the writer, editor and game master. Create exciting visual novels that others can download and play for themselves and show the world your skills as a creator. Take your assets and created characters and then place them in Visual Novel Maker so your story can be truly your own. Have you ever screamed to the world that you wish you could show off your art and or stories? If you have then Visual Novel Maker is the ideal tool to give life to your works and allow other games out there the pleasure of seeing what your hard work has crafted.
Maker titles—though some consider them games—aren’t new to the scene of gaming. Ever since RPG Maker released way back in the early 90s, we have seen various installments that have given novice game creators the means of crafting their own works. Though developer/publisher Degica has changed the maker series by giving us Visual Novel Maker. With the ability to create your own visual novel works, Visual Novel Maker seems like a great piece of software but is that truly the case? Find out with us as we review Visual Novel Maker for the PC.
Now, in case you are indeed new the Maker games of yesteryear let us explain somethings. First, Visual Novel Maker isn’t what most would consider a video game. It does give players the means of playing a visual novel but it has to be either one they create or download. Lastly, if you have no idea how to edit—which don’t feel bad as that’s the case with some of us here at Honey’s Anime—then Visual Novel Maker will be a truly hard title to use. However, that doesn’t mean you can use Visual Novel Maker but be prepared for a lot of time in trial and error.
Alright, with that out of the way, let’s talk about “gameplay”. Visual Novel Maker again isn’t a game but it gives people the tools to make their own games. There are hundreds of things you can do in Visual Novel Maker such as edit scenes, transition between scenes, edit what characters say and how they react based on choices and the list goes on. To say Visual Novel Maker is overwhelming to the complete novice creator is an understatement. However, even here at Honey’s Anime we were able to make some scenes work as most of the harder work of coding is done by Visual Novel Maker’s own internal systems.
Graphically, Visual Novel Maker is impressive—if we’re considering in game assets—and provides a nice amount of detail in its pre-rendered materials. While there are quite a few characters, backgrounds and designs to use compared to RPG Maker, Visual Novel Maker doesn’t have nearly the same level of in game items to use. We presume that Visual Novel Maker really does want creators to use their own designs before just relying solely on theirs but still some more diversity in backgrounds to use would have been better. The same can be said of the in-game music which is bare minimum but pretty strong for what’s offered. Ultimately, be prepared to use your own art, music and voices—which is an option—if you want to really get the most out of Visual Novel Maker.
Lastly, we do wish Visual Novel Maker had a tutorial or even a basic one. While we understand most RPG Maker games—and maker games in general—don’t have a tutorial, that doesn’t make us wish for one any less. Visual Novel Maker isn’t made for those who want an easy drag and drop creation tool. Instead, Visual Novel Maker is for those who take game creating seriously or want to truly test their knowledge so they can craft a game of their own. That’s why if you fit into the latter group, Visual Novel Maker is clearly for you.
Honey's Gameplay Consensus:
Visual Novel Maker is something pretty amazing for a maker program. If you’ve ever found yourself wishing you were a better coder so you could make your own visual novel masterpieces then you’re in luck as Visual Novel Maker does all the work for you in that regard. There are literally thousands of ways to manipulate your own creations in Visual Novel Maker making it one of the more impressive maker titles we’ve gotten our hands on in some years. However, just note that Visual Novel Maker isn’t an easy system to use for those who are completely new to game creating and with no tutorials, it will take an absurd amount of trial and error for most. However, if you already know a small amount of editing and game creating works, then Visual Novel Maker will be the best tool for you to download.
Extremely robust editing system
Hundreds of in game assets
The ability to play your own games and those of others
Use either pre-created assets or import your own
Make games for PC, MacOSX and even phones
Not going to be easy for those completely new to game design
Editing software takes some getting used to
A tutorial could have been nice
Not a lot of pre-installed backgrounds
Honey's Final Verdict:
Visual Novel Maker is one of those software programs that truly allows creators, artists and writers a means of expressing themselves in a simpler way. While Visual Novel Maker won’t appeal to all—especially those with a complete lack of editing knowledge—but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad title by any means. Just know going in that Visual Novel Maker is aimed for those serious about creating their visual novel games and need a program that offers the majority of work for them.
