Introduction

The word succubus is derived from the Latin word succubare, as in to lie beneath, with sub meaning under, and cubare to lie. You don’t have to be an Italian from the middle ages to understand what the succubare is lying beneath either. But, if you just so happen to be as dense as most harem protagonists the succubare or succubus is referring to the implied sexual position under a man. The image of succubus has changed a lot since the 16th century. You used to be in fear of this demonic being that would force themselves on you in the night to steal your, um, life force. We view them in many, many different ways now, from the happy go lucky schoolgirl Kurumu Kurono from Rosario + Vampire to the adorable Shinjin who is summoned by Kazuma in Konosuba. The succubus we see in modern times are mainly girls we wouldn’t mind seeing slip under our sheet.

Discussion Time

Saki Michino was tossed out on the streets, for her own good mind you, by her elder sister. She wandered aimlessly until collapsing near an apartment complex due to hunger. An office worker by the name of Renta Ota discovers her unconscious body and with no ill intentions carries her to his home. The entire time he carried her he found himself being overcome by a very primal urge. Ota can feel something building inside him that he migtht not beable to control. He goes to bed and then has the most amazing dream that leaves him feeling refreshed and calm in the morning despite finding the strange girl sleeping next to him. He soon finds out the dream was no dream and that his houseguest was very aware of his primal urge and helped relieve him of his tension. It isn’t until another uninvited guest, Saki’s sister Yumeka, drops by and spills the beans on the supernatural siblings. You see Saki is shy and her sister was trying to teach her a lesson by kicking her out. The younger Succubus needed to find a donor of “essence,” the term for a succubus number one food source. A succubus allure becomes stronger and stronger the longer they go without drinking in that “essence”. Saki didn’t want a donor. She wanted to fall in love with the man first before taking his essence. Saki's romantic quest was making the process take far longer than it should and wasn't very healthy for her or those around her. Ota didn’t know if he should be happy that his new roommate is a beautiful girl or terrified that she constantly has him on the verge of losing control.

Why You Should Read Saki-chan wa Konya mo Pekopeko Vol. 1 (Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight Vol. 1)

1. Ooh, the beauty is there but a beast is in the heart

We are all animals we just like to think because we practice a modicum of self-control that we are more than our animal instincts. We can tell from his actions that Renta Ota is one of those people that think he is more than his instincts. He tries from the get-go not to get excited by Saki. But, this guy is no Tetsuo from Interview with Monster Girls. Tetsuo, we must say is the epitome of self-control around another succubus by the name of Sakie. Renta gets so out of control at one point after Saki slips into his bed he releases the pressure so to speak. The beast is our instinct and our heart is our reason and we can only hope that the two align.

2. The lean and hungry type

Saki is the lean and hungry type in multiple ways but with her shapely curves you’d never call her skinny. She is a good cook and loves to eat and looks amazing in an apron if you know what we mean. She as a succubus is also hungry in other ways but we’ve explained that in the intro. Saki-chan, possibly because she is a succubus or she’s just a slob, doesn’t seem to bother with modesty. A men’s tank-top and no bra didn’t make her blush nearly as much as Ota did. We get a full view of anything slipping out from under the fabric and we thank Mikokuno Homare and StudioHIP-CATs for their attention to detail.

Why You Should Skip Saki-chan wa Konya mo Pekopeko Vol. 1 (Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight Vol. 1)

1. Nothing is new, I've seen her here before

We don’t say there’s nothing new here to be mean. We just say that the plot consisting of an average guy and the effects of a succubus on him has been done. We’d like to mention again the relationship between Sakie-sensei and Tetsuo-sensei in Interviews with Monster Girls as our leading example. You could even look at Tsukune and Kurumu’s relationship since Kurumu was also trying to rely on love and baking in her quest to find a mate and not her pheromones. The biggest twist on these “done” before storylines is this one is ecchi, very ecchi to the point it’s released by Ghost Ship a division of Seven Seas dedicated to ecchi manga.

Final Thoughts

We all feel a little naughty sometimes and the chance to indulge ourselves in some escapest manga is something we need on an instinctual level. The chance to laugh at the protagonist as he is put in impossible situations is one of the best parts of the ecchi genre. We know that it’s not real and that’s what makes it okay. Saki is a 20-year-old succubus which makes her more than just legal to drink alcohol and do other things under Japanese law. It is our recommendation that you read this with your back to a wall when in public. You don’t want anyone peaking over your shoulder on some pages- its called ecchi for a reason. We guess the moral of this story is that when it comes to succubi she a maneater.

P.S. We attribute these topic titles to Daryl Hall & John Oates
