Finally, after 30 years since the debut of the original novels, Hathaway’s Flash, another sequel to Char’s Counterattack is getting an anime adaptation in the form of a movie trilogy. Taking place twelve years after Char’s Counterattack, Hathaway Noa, the son of Bright and Mirai Noa, has become a rebel leader under the alias Mafty Navue Eren. As Mafty, he fights the corruption of his time’s Earth Federation with the Xi Gundam by his side. So, allow us to present to you why you should be pumped for Hathaway’s Flash Hype.
Badass Mechs
For starters, what would Gundam be without its badass mechs? For Hathaway’s Flash, we’re looking forward to seeing the Penelope, and the Xi Gundam. They’re practically every UC mech we’ve seen until now, but on crack! The Xi Gundam is piloted by Hathaway, while the Penelope is piloted by Hathaways’s rival from the original novel, Lane Aime. Both Gundams are equipped with sick armor and weapons that would make a good futuristic version of Pimp My Ride (or Pimp My Mech?).
Shukou Murase as Director
While Yoshiyuki Tomino—the creator of Gundam and the novel of the Hathaway’s Flash original novel—won’t be officially involved with the production, he has officially given his blessing feeling it’s the right series for our time. So, who has taken the mantle? That would be Shukou Murase, a veteran of the Gundam franchise. He has been a staff member on Gundam Wing, Gundam F91, Gundam 0083, and Gundam Unicorn. And considering that Gundam Unicorn takes place relatively close to Hathaway’s Flash, we’re positive he’s the right man for the job! Considering the amazing quality he brought to Unicorn and based on the trailers and teasers we have been provided, we’re going to get top-notch animation and design.
Promising Voice Talent
While Nozomu Sasaki (most famous as the voices of Tetsuo from Akiro and Yusuke from Yuu Yuu Hakusho), the voice of Hathaway in Char’s Counterattack won’t be back to resume the role, we feel the older Hathaway is in good hands with the talents of Kensho Ono, who recently gained fame as the voice of Giorno Giovanna in the fifth arc of the epic JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. We are positive with his talent, he will capture a Hathaway who isn’t just world-weary, but angry at the system and more than ready to fight back. Considering that the poster of the movie shows Amuro and Char obscured by shadows in the background, it’s a given that Tohru Furuya and Shuuichi Ikeda are going to come back in their iconic roles, or perhaps come back through recycled footage.
A Promising Soundtrack
In the first teaser, fans were treated to Beyond The Time, the ending theme to Char’s Counterattack. Are we to assume that the song will officially be back for the movie? Or was it just fan service for the sake of the trailer? While we can’t say for certain, it would be awesome just to have it due to its direct connection with Char’s Counterattack. What we can also mention with confidence is with J-Rock band Alexandros, who recently gained worldwide fame by contributing the theme song to Sega’s Judgment, is slated to do the theme song for Hathaway’s Flash. If you’ve heard their work in that game, then you know they’re going to bring their A-game for an intense anime packed with action and emotion.
Final Thoughts
If there’s anyone looking forward to Hathaway’s Flash, it is without a shadow of a doubt, the most hardcore of Gundam fans. While many are aware of the original novel, it is not officially released in English so non-Japanese reading fans have to read summaries. Through this anime, they can finally get to see the story from start to finish in the form of a trilogy.
Based on the unorthodox designs of the mechs from the original novel, we are curious to see how they function in anime form. Gundam has always been a master of being crazy with its art, and yet, it can tell a riveting story, and that is why we’re pumped for Hathaway’s Flash. As for you readers that happen to be hardcore Gundam fans, are you looking forward to Hathaway’s Flash? Or would you rather see an adaptation of something else such as Crossbone Gundam? Or Char’s Deleted Affair?
