3 Fantasy Manga to Drop Everything for and Read

Man, do we really enjoy a good fantasy read. Something that just takes you out of what you typically expect from a story and puts you into an entirely different world and scenario. Nothing else comes close in manga, and there are some great ones out there! Here are three fantasy manga you need to be reading, like nowish.

1. Tatoeba Last Dungeon Mae no Mura no Shounen ga Joban no Machi de Kurasu Youna Monogatari

  • Authors: Satou, Toshio
  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
  • Volumes: 2
  • Published: September 2017 - Ongoing

Lloyd is often ridiculed by everyone for being the weakest in Konron village, but even still, he has dreams of traveling to the Azami kingdom and becoming a soldier. After convincing the desperate and overly affectionate Alca, who is a witch and mayor of their isolated village, he travels to take the test to determine his qualities as a soldier. However, there is one major joke to this story, and Lloyd isn’t privy to the punchline. Konron village is the home of the mightiest warriors descended from heroes of legends, and even being the weakest of them makes him the strongest outside of his home.

This manga is full of hilarious misunderstandings. Lloyd can do just about anything from dispelling hexes, cooking, cleaning, and battling the most fearsome monsters. However, he has a massive inferiority complex due to years of teasing back home. Everyone sees him at face value at first, but very soon they’re all vying for his attention, begging him for his help. We’re in love with this manga currently and dying to read each chapter released.

2. Uchi no Musume no Tame naraba, Ore wa Moshikashitara Maou mo Taoseru kamo Shirenai. (If It's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord)

  • Authors: CHIROLU
  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Drama
  • Volumes: 4
  • Published: July 2016 - Ongoing

The adventurer Dale happens upon an abandoned demon girl named Latina alone in the forest and rescues her. Despite being branded as a criminal for having one broken horn, he adopts her and raises her with the help of the innkeepers where he stays while working. It doesn’t take long for the patrons and staff to fall in love with the cute and earnest Latina, and very soon, the whole town is as affectionate and protective of her as Dale himself.

This is a heartwarming fantasy story of a young man being thrust into the role of single parent but accepting it ungrudgingly. Latina is perhaps the cutest character we’ve ever read, not only from her design but her personality as well. When we say we almost punched our monitors during one arc that put her at risk, we mean it. You owe it to yourself to check this one out, even with the anime scheduled for this July.

3. Made in Abyss

  • Authors: Tsukushi, Akihito
  • Genres: Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Tragedy
  • Volumes: 8
  • Published: October 2012 - Ongoing

When we think about the fact that we almost never read this story we feel almost as much sadness as from reading it. Made in Abyss is easily the best manga we’ve ever read. Telling the story of the aspiring delver Riko and her robot protector Reg, the two are thrust on a perilous one-way trip down into hell itself.

Riko’s mother was one of the greatest delvers to ever explore the abyss, but when she is reported dead, Riko finds clues that lead her to make a trip to find her. Facing one nightmarish obstacle after another, the two grow closer and learn secrets of Reg’s origins and the mysteries surrounding Riko’s birth. The two were meant to make this journey, but that doesn’t make it any less dangerous.

This story has near perfect characters, setting, villains and driving plot. Not a single panel is wasted, and the art is as mesmerizing and the storylines they follow. In our opinion there is no manga worth reading more right now than Made in Abyss, and we sincerely hope you check it out for yourselves.
