Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! Preview (No Spoilers)

When Kazuma's comfortable NEET lifestyle is brought to an abrupt end on his way home, he is greeted by a young goddess named Aqua. The goddess presents two choices to Kazuma: moving on to heaven or reincarnating into a genuine fantasy world in order to fight the Demon King with a single item of his choice. Kazuma - both intrigued by the idea of a real fantasy world and slightly irritated at Aqua's attitude - chooses reincarnation and decides to bring Aqua with him. Together, they must brave the harsh environment as adventurers, making new friends and slaying various monsters on their quest to kill the Demon King.

Aqua Bio

Seiyuu Name: Amamiya Sora

Originally, the bored water goddess in charge of sending humans to the fantasy world, Aqua, ended up dragged into the RPG realm along with Kazuma. Aqua quickly shows off her stubborn and idiotic nature when she realizes the gravity of the situation. Due to her exceptional stats in every skill (besides intellect and luck), Aqua became the arch priestess of Team Kazuma, specializing in slaying the undead and the demonic. Rather than benefitting her team, however, Aqua spends most of her time learning party tricks and taking on various difficult quests in order to make as much money as possible. Shackled with both helping Kazuma and her crippling debt, Aqua must help her teammates in defeating the Demon King and finally returning to her position as goddess.

Aqua Highlights (Spoilers beyond this point)

1. Sucker for Money

Perhaps the only thing in the world more important to Aqua than her godly position is money. From the first moments in which she is stuck in the RPG world, she attempts to persuade one of her 'followers' to offer her money - which works out despite the direct blow to her godly pride. While her greed may seem like a bad trait at first glance, many of the shows finest moments come from Aqua simply wanting to make some money to get by or pay off her debt. Had she not wanted to recruit more members to make her life easier, then it's possible the other two party members wouldn't even have been able to join. Her constant requests for money lead to an overall better life for the whole party - as well as the comedic moments where she attempts to swindle Kazuma to help her out with her debt.

2. The Healer of the Team

A simple convention of any RPG is that a healer is downright mandatory for staying alive - and Aqua does a surprisingly good job of it. Though she spends most of her time performing party tricks, her abilities go on full display when a major emergency quest occurs. Through her naturally high charisma and class, she is able to raise the morale of others and even resurrect fallen adventurers - which came in handy when Kazuma bit the dust a second time. Her arch priest class also comes in handy when fighting the undead - with her being able to take out multiple enemies with relative ease. Thus, Aqua is useful when it comes to both defense and offense, making her an essential member of Kazuma's party.

3. The Most Useless Goddess

When Kazuma initially picked Aqua to join him, he had high hopes that her being a goddess would be a huge help, only to learn how useless Aqua actually is initially. At the same time, Aqua being so desperate and hopeless when it comes to her new environment makes her that much more endearing. Despite being a goddess, Aqua still feels down-to-earth and relatable since she fits into the world just as much as any other character. Her initial struggles and quick adaptation to her new life make her even more likable - seeing her perform labor work along with the other humans connects her to the audience because she isn’t as high and mighty as she likes to believe.

4. She is Incredibly Stupid and Arrogant

Being a goddess, Aqua has a tendency to greatly overestimate her abilities and leads to her biting off more than she can chew. At the same time, Aqua's actions tend to have larger consequences that make them much worse in the long-run (using too much water for her flood attack being the most prominent). In that regard, situations such as Aqua being stuck in a cage surrounded by alligators is less harrowing and more funny, as she is not an infallible character. Being the most ignorant of the party members, Aqua brings a style of humor that isn't present with the other characters, and would be gone if she wasn't around. From the very beginning of the series, when she gets taken as a result of her mocking Kazuma, Aqua is a sort of punching bag for monsters and Kazuma alike, and she brings some levity to the more dire situations that KonoSuba has to offer.

5. Super Cute When Crying

Aqua has many extremely cute moments throughout all of KonoSuba. Her rather childish and carefree personality result in there being a certain charm when she is grabbing onto Kazuma's clothes and dragged along, begging for him to listen to her. It's also impossible not to crack a bit of a smile watching her perform party tricks to try and entertain and get praise from other adventurers. A lot of Aqua's cuteness comes from her interactions and reactions to Kazuma's actions - with her crying face after being scolded by Kazuma being one of the exceptionally cute moments. Regardless of the situation, Aqua crying or screaming for Kazuma to help her is always funny, without being too sad since Aqua, as a character, generally deserves it. Unlike other characters of the same archetype, Aqua is rather self-centered and ends up causing many hindrances, so her misfortune comes off as more humorous and less serious or sad. Aqua's cry-baby nature leads to some of both the cutest and funniest moments in KonoSuba.

Final Thoughts

Aqua is an integral part of Kazuma's party, while at the same time being one of the most useless goddesses in anime. Her selfish nature coupled with her cry-baby attitude lead to many difficult times for the team, but that is also what makes her such a lovable character. Her abilities to purify undead and resurrect her teammates are second only to her proficiency at party tricks, and it all leads to her being incredibly helpful for her team at times, even if she is a hindrance at other points. Her negative points are more reason to cheer her on and pray for her to have a successful mission. However, if we missed out on any other features that this wonderful water goddess should be praised for, then feel free to comment on what you love about Aqua down below!
