Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2 (KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! 2) Introduction and Story (Spoilers)

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2 or in short, Konosuba 2, follows the continuation of the first season. Kazuma Satou, a 16-year-old NEET that becomes an adventurer after being sent to a parallel world, upon death from 'acute stress reaction'; Aqua, the goddess of water that is also an arch priestess whose job is to resurrect humans, but instead gets dragged by Kazuma into the parallel world; Megumin, a 13-year-old archwizard who is obsessed with explosion magic and refuses to learn any other skills, her magic uses up all of her energy to cast and leaves her incapacitated afterwards; and Darkness, a powerful 18 year old crusader who lacks the accuracy to hit anything, who is also noble known as 'Dustiness Ford Lalatina' and also a masochist who dreams of being attacked by humans or monsters.

Our adventurers are joined by Wiz, a lich wizard and general in the Devil Army, who we met in the first season, she owns a magic shop in town. And other supporting characters, one of which is Yunyun, Megumin's former classmate that strives to rival her in everything she does.

On a quest to defeat the devil king, so that Aqua can return to her post in the afterlife. Kazuma eventually figures that he'd rather live a luxurious life than risk his life doing the impossible with a dysfunctional team of misfit heroes. However, on his journey, he inevitably gets entangled with the devil king's army and in a fight to save the town, he inadvertently blows up a noble's mansion in the process and gets arrested for treason.

The second season begins with Kazuma in jail and the others trying to free him. In a desperate spot, Darkness reveals her identity as a noble and is able to convince the court to free Kazuma temporarily until he is able to prove his innocence. Shortly after returning, our heroes find themselves stripped of their possessions in order to repay the huge debt that they owe. Once again, they begin back at square one with no money, trying to repay the huge debt and prove Kazuma's innocence.

What I liked about "Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2" (KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! 2)

Konosuba 2 brings back the elements that made the first season as successful as it was. There is an abundance of comedic antics throughout the season that is bound to make you roll on the floor laughing. What we liked about Konosuba 2 is the ridiculous series of unfortunate, yet self-induced events that cause never-ending problems for our misfit adventurers. This season mainly focuses on Kazuma's shortcomings due to his friends, such as monsters being attracted by Aqua's holy aura or Darkness's adamantite armour. And also Aqua's troublesome antics that cause more hindrance than its intended helpfulness, such as the magic circle in the dungeon, that causes Kazuma to profusely apologise every time.

What we like about Konosuba 2 is that no matter how bad the situation becomes, our adventurers seem to always find a way out of a tough spot and are able to overcome their challenges either with complete luck or actually coordinated teamwork, by using their specific abilities in the right places.

Discussion time

Though Konosuba 2 is jam-packed full of comedy and random silliness, its shortcoming is its lack of story. Though it could be argued that, the lack of story is what makes the anime have a certain charm about it. The quests that Kazuma and his party complete take them closer to their end goal, however the things that they think are done for the greater good, actually come back to bite them from behind, and it deters them further from their end goal. Such as Aqua's failed attempts to strengthen her goddess powers to fight the Devil King by increasing her follower’s faith in her. Instead, what she does has the complete opposite effect and ends up only making them hunt her down for being a fraud.

Albeit short (this season only contains another 10 episodes), it has some golden moments that make you cry with laughter. For example, Darkness's constant perverted behaviour in wanting to be dominated, even in dire situations. Like when they are suddenly attacked by a swarm of kite hawks; instead of protecting the people around her, she throws herself only to be trampled on, even though the other travellers see it as a heroic act of courage. Darkness even goes as far as jumping in front of the defending attacks to receive all the punishments she can get. Then to put fuel on the flames, she even suggests that they tie her to a wagon and drag her along the floor in order to escape. What is even funnier is that Kazuma receives the blame for being a sadist from the others. Or the fact that Darkness constantly reveals her identity as an Eris worshipper on purpose, to receive punishment from the Axis worshippers.

It would be nice to see a continuation, if they ever give a green light for a third season. Hopefully to see the team achieve their goal and see what will become of them after they have defeated the Devil King. Though the series never takes itself seriously and it always jokes around, it feels quite limited in the sense that their adventures are rather short and a little repetitive. For example, dealing with frog hunting again and beating the bosses with similar tactics. Though it is funny to rehash previous shortcomings and show a new twist to what they have previously done, it makes the series feel quite limited and at times a little dull.

Why you should watch "Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2" (KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! 2)

1. It's absolutely hilarious.

One of the funniest comedic anime this season, each episode has many funny moments that cannot be paralleled by other anime out right now. It's popular for being in its own league amongst other good anime out in Spring 2017.

The fact that there is no real serious factor at play in Konosuba is what allows for it to be random and is able to create some truly funny moments. Its style is rather like a parody than a stand-alone genre; it makes fun of popular knowledge of RPGs and of itself to bring you laughter.

2. It's just for fun, with no serious commitments.

If you don't want to invest in watching a long anime with many technical aspects or over developed characters, then this is the perfect little gem for you. Konosuba as a series is more like a fantasy slice of life kind of anime, it’s rather simple with the intention of just being fun to watch and doesn't require a lot of brainwork to understand what is going on at any time.

The characters are thrown into a random situation every episode and watching them try to overcome the troubles with a troublesome party is what makes it so enjoyable to watch.

3. You should watch it if you've enjoyed the first season.

Nothing much else to say but just watch it, you are guaranteed to enjoy this season just as much, or even better. Kazuma and his party get into more ridiculous situations which they can’t seem to avoid. Inevitably getting themselves into more crazy mayhem, which they have to find a way out of again.

This season expands on the comedic factors of the previous season and makes gags that are easily identified, and references to some of the better moments of the previous season.

Why you should skip "Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2" (KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! 2)

1. It doesn't really go anywhere.

As explained before, there isn't much of a major story and skipping it will mean that you've probably not missed out on much. There isn't much of a progression to their goal as it’s just full of randomness. If you are the type of person who likes to see a solid ending to a story, then you won't find it here, as it feels rather static.

Though new elements are introduced in this season, there is nothing substantial that happens and it almost feels like the characters are running around in loops over and over again.

2. It's pretty much the same jokes

If you are tired of the same pattern of jokes from the first season, then you should probably just skip this season. A lot of the same elements reappear this season, just sometimes in a slightly different context.

For example, each character still has that one joke that makes them interesting; Kazuma for his ego, Aqua for her uselessness, Megumin for her one trick, and Darkness for her perverse behaviour. Nothing much else is introduced and makes the characters feel rather stale at times.

3. It lacks character development and overall adventure

The characters are pretty much the same as before, with not much new in terms of abilities or personality. They are the same at the end of season two as they were in season one, meaning that it’s rather repetitive.

It also lacks the new adventure feel, and the world really isn't as vast as it seems, as there is only pretty much one new place introduced in the entire season. Sometimes it feels dull and boring to watch because it’s just the same as always.
