When we think of the term “devil,” we visualize a fiery inferno, a pitchfork, maybe even hellhounds. Devils are portrayed in many different ways through many different cultures however there is one thing that rings true throughout the world. Devils are the embodiment of death. This trait runs through the dreaded Lucifer, the Devil and the many devilish beings of the underworld and hell. This holds true in anime as well. We see many different portrayals of death and devils throughout the world of anime. This gives us a wide variety of characters that we can both identify with and hold up as untouchable, legendary beings. 5. Rem Kaginuki from Dance with Devils

However, her life takes a turn for the more interesting as the handsome student council members drag her into a world that she never believed existed. Ritsuka will find love and some much more ominous feelings lying in wait for her.

Rem is the one that all the girls want. He is head of the student council and quite literally a handsome devil. While Rem is not in touch with his feelings, he finds it hard to avoid the call of love. Despite him being a devil, Rem is a knight in shining armor to the protagonist, Ritsuka Tachibana. Rem is the ideal man to fall in love with and comes to terms with his emotions in his own time.

4. Lars from Shinmai Maou no Testament (The Testament of Sister New Devil)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2015 - March 2015

Skilled in possession, the demon Lars is often seen in Yahiro Takigawa’s body. He strives for a more ideal world where everyone can have a family but often lacks the motivation to make any difference. Despite his lazy nature, Lars can be useful when it comes to fights. When he is angry, he shows a much more intimidating side that no one would enjoy messing with. This happy-go-lucky demon is much more than he initially appears and makes it clear that no one should judge a person at first sight.

3. Decim from Death Parade

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2015 - March 2015

With no heaven or hell in sight, death just leads straight to Decim. A bartender that decides your fate is eerie on its own but combine that with a string of games that could unravel your mind is downright terrifying and death is nothing to fear because it has already come to pass. Playing a game that only Decim is privy to the rules to marks the unnerving beginning of Death Parade.

Decim is an interesting character in his own right. While he is not called a devil outright, he brings a judgement and suffering to those that have died. Decim is essentially a being who inflicts torture on those in the afterlife. By playing games, this seemingly soulless individual makes loved ones wreak terrible pain and grief on each other in hopes that it will influence his decision on which one of them to send to eternal damnation. Decim is a more pensive and intellectual devil than others on this list but earns his spot by making you question your own motives and understand that there is more to humans than simply good or bad.

Reborn as a devil, Issei Hyoudou has the power to overcome almost any foe with the use of his sacred gear. While Issei may seem like the typical perverted high school student, he is much more than that. He shows a love and loyalty towards Rias and the other devils around him that is unparalleled. When others he cares about are in trouble, Issei is willing to put his own life on the line without a second thought. Issei is an admirable character who has great compassion for all those around him.

His meek demeanor changed to a more arrogant persona and this allowed him to put himself out in the world more than he initially had. Despite his change in strength and ability, Akira’s wants and desires remained virtually unchanged.
