Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Preview (No Spoilers)
The story centers on Natsuki Subaru, a typical normal teenager, who one day gets sucked into a parallel world of the Kingdom of Lugnica. Upon arriving, Subaru thought that he was supposed to be some sort of hero with overpowering abilities that will somehow make him really famous in the fantasy world like the typical cliché stories. Turns out, he didn’t have anything to begin with. Zero. Except the fact that he realized he could somehow ‘Return by Death’ to a few days back, a unique ability that allows him to jump back time if he were to end up dead. Join Subaru as he exploits this ability to somehow change the present/future for the better!
Natsuki Subaru Bio
Seiyuu Name: Yuusuke Kobayashi
“My name is Natsuki Subaru. Not only am I clueless, I’m also broke beyond compare!
Nice to meet ya!”
After experiencing some gruesome death(s), Natsuki Subaru began to realize that he holds the key to change the outcomes of his actions in the future. With his ability to ‘Return by Death’, he uses it to protect the ones he deeply cares for, mainly Emilia and Rem. Funny, quirky, persistent, caring, are the words you’re looking for if you want to describe what kind of man Natsuki Subaru is!
Natsuki Subaru Highlights
1. Selfless and Chivalrous
Ever heard the expression, “Chivalry is dead?” that expression doesn’t apply to Natsuki Subaru. Even with his quirky attitude and views of the fantasy world he was summoned to, Subaru is quite the gentleman. This can be seen in the very first episode of the series, where he decided to help Emilia, whom he just met, as a token of gratitude for saving him.
His slick moves don't end there, though. In episode 3 of the series, when Natsuki successfully foiled Elsa Granhirte’s attack towards Emilia saving her life, he asked for something in return from Emilia. One request and that is to tell him what her name is. Subaru can also be really selfless in terms of saving other people, willingly sacrificing himself to save everyone. This can be seen in episode 9, where he purposely pushed Rem out of the way from an incoming attack from the ‘Mabeasts’.
2. His Affection Towards Emilia
So in the previous entry, you’d known about his cringe-y heroic moments where he asked nothing in return other than the name of the beautiful half-elf Emilia. Although some might argue that this move was a cheeky one for him to get closer with Emilia, with throughout the series, you will realize that his feelings towards her are genuine and that he cares deeply for Emilia.
“All those times I got hurt, all the crying I did, all the pain I felt, all the fighting I did with my life at stake… And my reward was her name and a single smile.” “Jeez… Talk about unequal compensation.” – Natsuki Subaru
One of the most highlighted scenes of Emilia and Subaru is when Subaru went through a mental struggle of putting up a tough front in order to gain the trust of Ram and Rem. Emilia, who caught on Subaru’s façade, provided him comfort by letting him lie down on her lap. Subaru finally broke into tears, and with that, he was back on his feet again.
3. His Affection Towards Rem or Rem’s Affection Towards Him.
If you have already watched the series, then you know exactly what this entry meant. In episode 18 of the series, Subaru, who had just experienced several deaths involving Petelgeuse and the Witch’s Cult, was torn apart mentally. Unable to see a way out, Subaru resolved into the least heroic solution, running away with Rem.
Although Rem cares deeply for Subaru and the thought did cross Rem’s mind of having a beautiful family with Subaru, nevertheless she couldn’t let Subaru do that. She knew that if they were to leave at that point, things would never be the same again. Subaru wouldn’t be the same again.
Subaru continued with the self-denial, admitting that he is weak, powerless, and couldn’t do anything. Rem broke into tears explaining how the Subaru she knew was a hero and how she trusts him no matter what.
Overall, it was a very touching scene, you would be lying if you haven’t felt your heartstrings pulled after watching Rem show her unconditional faith and love towards Subaru. With that said, this very reason is also why some fans ‘hate’ Subaru, because he still remained faithful towards Emilia, casting Rem into the notorious ‘Friend Zone’.
4. Great with Kids
This next one is one of the winning personalities for an ideal husband. Subaru is really great with kids, as seen in the very first episode of the series when Emilia came across a little girl who got lost, Subaru was able to stop her from crying with a little coin trick.
Subaru’s knack with kids is also shown in episode 9 where he was able to get to know the kids from the villages in a much deeper level. Knowing what their dreams are and what not. He even goes to the trouble heading back to the village to save those kids who are in danger, after finding out that the stray dog was a Shaman.
‘Subaru, best husbando.’
5. Persistent
If you haven’t figured it by now, Subaru can be extremely persistent when it comes to certain situations, refusing to give up at all costs. This trait is highly respected by many, including Crusch Karsten, one of the five candidates for the royal election. When facing the infamous White Whale, Subaru was the first one to run into the battlefield, ignoring all the danger and risks of death.
“Stand up! Lift your faces! Take up your weapons! Look at that boy. He’s so weak and fragile, a breath could blow him away, and he’s unarmed! He is a powerless boy, whose defeat I have seen with my own eyes! He’s weaker than anyone else here! Yet he’s shouting louder than anyone, that we can still do this. So how can we sit here, with downcast gazes? If our weakest man has not given up, how is kneeling in defeat acceptable for us? Did you all come this far to wallow in shame?!”
Thanks to Subaru’s willpower, Crusch gave a motivational speech to her army, making them regain their fighting spirit once more.
Final Thoughts
After experiencing several gruesome deaths, one is bound to break. That happens to Subaru, and it’s not air to blame him for it. Dying can be a mentally traumatic thing, let alone dying several times. Even though we may see quite a few scenes where Subaru just gave up and lost it, he will eventually find help to regain his normal self.
All in all, Subaru is a great person, with amazing personalities. Although some might argue that Subaru is stupid for choosing Emilia over Rem, Subaru has earned a lot of fandom for an individual, truly a ‘Zero’ to ‘Hero’ type of guy!
