Re: Zero is fantasy, dark, drama genre anime, with Natsuki Subaru as the main character. With the release of this fairly new anime series in 2016, it quickly gained popularity amongst other anime titles. Upon taking a glance over the series’ promotional poster, you’d notice that there were quite a few female characters featured in it.
Furthermore, on the first episode of the series, you’d probably catch on the immediate ship between Natsuki Subaru and the lovely and kind, Emilia. But this article will be featuring another character from series, Rem.
If you happen to have forgotten about this character, let us refresh your memory. In episode 4 of the series, when Subaru woke up after getting shocked by Beatrice, he was greeted by two lovely similar-looking twins wearing a maid-like outfit. The one who had a distinctive reddish color hair with her bangs covering her left eye, was Ram. On the other hand, Rem was the one who had bluish color hair with her bangs covering her right eye.
Why would Rem be the OTP (One True Pairing) for Natsuki Subaru? Let’s find out together the 5 reasons why Rem should’ve ended up with Natsuki Subaru! Let’s go!
Note: This article contains spoilers for the anime.
1. Her Charming Cuteness and Beauty
It comes as no surprise for a lot of people to fallen head over heels for Rem. Thanks to her obviously cute looking appearance, fans of the series were left quite smitten for her maid outfit as well. Cute looks with a maid outfit equal a cute combination. Even when Rem’s normal facial expression gives off an expressionless, and innocent vibe, it’s still quite attractive. Who would be able to resist that cute kawaii face of Rem’s?
Although, when Subaru and Rem first meet, both Rem and Ram are quite cold towards him, as they can be seen throwing insults and criticizing Subaru for, well, everything about him really. As the story progresses, it’s definitely heartwarming to see Rem warm up to him, as Subaru was able to gain her trust.
2. Her Badass-ness
In case you haven’t noticed yet, Rem is actually a demon. Don’t be fooled by her cute appearance, as Rem is quite powerful despite being only a single-horned demon. A specific scene seen in episode 9 of the series was best to showcase this trait of hers.
When Subaru made the decision to save the villagers’ kids in the forbidden forest infested with mabeast, Rem chose to help him. Overpowered by the sheer number of mabeasts that attacked them, Rem snapped and turn into her single-horned demon form, and basically massacring everything that stands in her way.
You can see the extent of her power once more in episode 10 when Rem decides to go alone into the forest to slay the remaining mabeasts, all in efforts to save Subaru from the curse that was inflicted on him when they bit him. It literally took a hit to the head to regain Rem’s normal self after her demonic transformation.
3. Her Personality
So up until now, you’d already know about Rem’s cute and innocent looks, as well as her abilities to be able to just beat the crap out of anything, now it’s time to touch on her personality. Rem is just a nice and sweet girl inside.
In hindsight, she might look a bit cold, as her voice actor Minase Inori did an amazing job portraying Rem, as she gives off this neutral, sort of poker-faced feel like voice, adding the extra ‘oomph’ to Rem’s character as a whole. It’s not that hard to spot her kind demeanor over the series because you’d find that she is very chivalrous when it comes to saving people’s lives. This can be seen in episodes 9 and 10, as she puts herself in danger in order to save the villagers children as well as Subaru.
4. Waifu Material
Rem is great with household chores and whatnot. This awesome ability makes Rem the perfect waifu material. Imagine someone that has great control over the household, sheer perfection. She was able to excel doing those things thanks to her past guilt, of being partially glad that Ram’s horn was broken off during an attack from the Witch’s Cult. This way, Ram won’t outshine Rem anymore.
First seen in episode 4, Rem was complimented for being very effective with chores, taking care of the Rosewaal Mansion. Not only that, she actually tends to everyone’s hair, and helps out with Ram’s daily grooming, preparing her dress to get ready for the morning, which is probably the reason why Ram had similar haircut and outfits as Rem. Haunted with guilt and inferiority, Rem tries her best to fill in the shoes left over by Ram, but ultimately make her the perfect couple for Subaru!
5. Victims of the Friendzone
This next one is probably the number 1 reason why Subaru should’ve ended up with Rem and not Emilia, her sincerity and unconditional love for Subaru. Witness the girl who got friend-zoned but still genuinely cares for the guy, that’s Rem. Details of this particular trait can be seen in episode 18 when Subaru was having a midlife crisis over his existence and purpose of living.
It was a very emotional scene where Rem broke out into tears and gives a short amazing speech to get Subaru back on track again:
“I know that no matter how deeply you have fallen into darkness, you still have the courage to reach out your hand.”
“I love it when you stroke my hair. I feel as if we can understand each other through the contact between your hand and my hair.”
“I love your voice. Just hearing you say one word makes my heart feel warmer.”
“I love your eyes. Normally, they look stern, but when you’re being kind to someone, I love the way they soften.”
“I love your fingers. For a boy, you have such lovely fingers. But when they clutch mine, I know they are the strong, slender fingers of a man.”
“I love the way you walk. When we walk together, I love the way you occasionally turn, to make sure I keep up.”
“I love the way you look when you sleep. You look unguarded, like an infant, and your eyelashes are on the long side. When I touch your cheek, you calm down… And when I playfully touch your lips, you don’t even notice… And it makes my heart ache terribly. I love you.”
After this emotional scene, all Subaru did was contemplate his desires to see Emilia again, therefore rejecting Rem, flat out:
“When you said that you hate yourself, it made me want to tell you all the wonderful things I know about you.”
Here you can see Rem’s sincere love for Subaru. Do you realize how hard it is for a girl to cry for her love? Even when she was friend-zoned, she was more than willing to help Subaru achieve his goal to be together with Emilia, as long as it meant the happiness and safety of Subaru then Rem wouldn’t care.
“I love Emilia.”
To find these characteristics in a girl, what more could you possibly ask for? She is the perfect wife-y or waifu for all the guys! Especially for Subaru!
Final Thoughts
Re: Zero is an overall great anime to watch, with an amazing blend of characters such as Subaru and Rem, and their contributing voice actors, this series is definitely worth watching.
But to sum the article all off, Emilia is a great character as well, but Rem is just on a whole different level compared to her. For Re:Zero fans out there? Show your support for the OTP Subaru x Rem! #TeamRem Maybe in the upcoming season 2, the writers would put more emphasis on Rem’s relationship with Subaru, who knows? Stay tuned and peace out!
