Welcome to the Silver Millennium, my dear otakus! This time we are going to talk about a great shoujo anime classic that has been recently remade. That last season of Sailor Moon Crystal was something, don’t you agree? It was full of battles, adventure, uncertainty, drama, and a little bit of science fiction. Above all, love and friendship triumphed over the adversity!
We have to admit that the third season of Crystal is also incredible because we see all the Sailor Senshi from the Solar System in action. Their interactions in their civilian identities are superb! Since the first version of the anime, the clash between the Inner Sailor Senshi and the Outer Senshi have been legendary. So, while we wait for the next season of Sailor Moon Crystal, let’s remember one of our favorite Sailor Senshi: none other than Setsuna Meiou! Of course that we love all the Sailor Senshi, but Setsuna is popular due to her unique characteristics. Let’s see exactly which ones!

Setsuna Meiou Preview (No Spoilers)
Sailor Moon Crystal is the creation of Naoko Takeuchi, a pharmacist who became a successful mangaka in the nineties. This anime follows the adventures of a team of mostly female warriors protected by the power of the planets. They are lead by the clumsy but determined Usagi Tsukino - Sailor Moon. Usagi and her friends fight against whoever poses a menace to the planet Earth and the lives that thrive there! The Sailor Senshi also try to lead normal lives as best as they can, aided by the strength of their friendship. And one of those Senshi is Setsuna Meiou.
If you want to watch Sailor Moon Crystal and find out everything about Setsuna yourself, you can stop reading now. We have other articles about Sailor Moon and other shoujo anime on this website, anyway. If not, let’s proceed!
Setsuna Meiou Bio
Setsuna is the civilian identity of Sailor Pluto, the Senshi of time. She is said to be the daughter of Chronos, the God of Time. In the distant past, Setsuna was confided with the mission of guarding the Gates of Time by Queen Serenity of the Silver Millennium (the mother of Usagi on their first lives). But this mission meant that Setsuna had the big responsibility of not leaving the area of the Gates of Time. Thus, she was not able to join the other Senshi in battle! Regarded by many as a legend, the lonely Senshi of Time remained in her post until the attacks of Black Moon against Crystal Tokyo broke havoc in space and time.
Setsuna Meiou Highlights
1. Her looks
So, what is the first thing that we noticed about Setsuna? Well, she was introduced to us in the second arc of Sailor Moon Crystal, when all the Senshis we knew were in Middle School. Setsuna was the first Senshi that was more grown up. Tall, dignified, proud and dark skinned, her looks are frankly astounding. We have to take into account that she is the only dark skinned Senshi, adding a little bit of racial diversity to the group.
Setsuna’s long dark olive hair that she wears mostly loose, with the exception of a small bun in the back of her head, is one of her trademarks. And how about her eyes? That dark red color resembling garnet gives her a deep, contemplative gaze. To compliment all of this, Setsuna dresses in a classy style when she is in her civilian mood. The science style fits her so well! No wonder Setsuna is considered a beauty even by her female colleagues. Which takes us to the next highlight...
2. She is a scientist
We cannot stress this one enough. We girls need role models in all sorts of knowledgeable fields. Naoko Takeuchi was one of the first ones to attend this demand. Among the Sailor Senshi, we have an interesting and diverse cast of girls with different aspirations. Just some of them dream about getting married. And yes, we have our beloved Ami - Sailor Mercury, who wants to become a doctor and studies all the time. But what sets Setsuna apart is that she is not just dreaming about a career. She is attending university too!
And which bad-ass career is our Setsuna following? Physics. But she does not study your regular undergraduate course of Physics. Setsuna is in the department of Experimental Physics! With her own cubicle (surrounded by plants, of course), instruments and running simulations of models. Setsuna truly adds glamour to the field, plus she shows that she has a hell of a brain for choosing such a difficult career!
3. Her mature personality
Looks, checked. Interesting career, checked. All of this would not count if our Setsuna had a horrible personality, right? But she is a Sailor Senshi; all Senshis have positive qualities. In the case of Setsuna, she does not only look like a grown up. She behaves like one.
Apparently, being in charge of the Gate of Time meant that Setsuna could see a good part of the past, present and future. She learnt a lot but is wise at the same time. This means that Setsuna does not interfere unless it is really necessary. She really is calm, serene and responsible!
Although Setsuna can be a little ruthless when it’s time to confront an enemy, she does not go to the extreme her eventual companions (Haruka-Sailor Uranus and Michiru-Sailor Neptune) go. These two even attacked the Inner Sailor Senshi once, but Setsuna just gives short explanations, assuring them that they don’t want them or the planet to get hurt. This girl knows how to deal with difficult situations.
4. Her power
And talking about confrontations, being the Senshi of Time, Setsuna - Sailor Pluto has some bad-ass moves in battle. For beginners, she is the first Senshi, other than Sailor Moon, that we see with a scepter. The garnet jewel on the top is a talisman, one of the three which have the power to wake Sailor Saturn up. Sailor Pluto has a few time and space manipulating abilities as well, as she possesses several keys that can open portals.
Nevertheless, we have to remember that one thing is to have powerful weapons and the other is to know how to use them well. Setsuna has been credited to be a very experienced Senshi. She can also stop time, although that goes in exchange for her own life. But all in all, Setsuna remains calm and collected when she uses her powers. Let’s just remember when Tellu attacked the Inner Sailor Senshi and nobody was able to stop her... until Sailor Pluto arrived. She just murmured “Dead Scream”, and boom! Enemy gone.
5. She is self-less (she loves King Endymion but keeps being loyal to Usagi).
This quality is probably the one that contributes the most to makes us all have so much sympathy for her. Although she is a solitary Senshi, Setsuna loves people and truly worries about them. Let’s just look at the way she cares for Chibi Usa, for example. And well, it is implied that she is in love with King Endymion (Mamoru’s future self), as Setsuna smiles, blushes and looks absolutely happy when they are talking.
Of course, Setsuna knows that Endymion is married! So, what does she do? Keep going on with her mission as usual. She actually states she admires Usagi (the future Neo Queen Serenity). Being a Senshi means Setsuna has to protect Usagi no matter what, and she does it out of true friendship. Feelings aside, she even cares for the daughter of the couple. And what happens when Hotaru/Sailor Saturn becomes a baby at the end of the Death Busters Arc? She is ready to raise Hotaru along with her companions Haruka and Michiru. Setsuna is truly selfless!
Conclusion
Sailor Moon has given us some of the best female warrior characters ever! We tried to remember the best moments of Setsuna on this article. She is a truly mature, classy and experienced Senshi, a good example and role model not only for the other Senshi, but also for all of us. We can hardly wait for more of her and all our dear Senshi to come back in the next seasons of Sailor Moon Crystal. We need more bad-ass girls like Setsuna, don’t you think the same?
Which other quality does Setsuna have that make of her a great character? Which are your favorite scenes from Sailor Moon Crystal with her? Don’t forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. From the Silver Millennium, this otaku-writer hopes you enjoyed our article. See you soon!
