Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) Preview (No Spoilers)

Tanjirou Kamado, a young boy with a keen sense of smell, takes care of his siblings and mother after the passing of his father. His tough but simple life comes to a tragic end when he returns from his errands one day to discover his entire family slaughtered except for Nezuko, one of his younger sisters. Alas, Nezuko isn’t the same person he remembers; she’s been transformed into a demon. Determined to protect his sister and turn her back into a human, Tanjirou begins a journey towards becoming a demon slayer.

Tanjirou Kamado Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)

1. He Has a Keen Sense of Smell

One of Tanjirou’s first defining traits is his keen sense of smell. We see him using his sense of smell in his everyday life even before he starts training to become a demon slayer. He uses his sense of smell to greater purpose to recognize manmade traps and to detect attacks from unlikely places. As he becomes a stronger warrior, Tanjirou’s innate sense of smell is bound to reach further inhuman heights.

2. He Is Extremely Empathetic

Tanjirou already highlighted how much he cares about other people by his desire to take care of a family full of helpless siblings. We see this only grow as he’s left alone with his demon-turned sister. Despite turning into a demon, Tanjirou’s kindness and empathy manage to drag her out of bloodthirsty insanity. The greatest highlight of Tanjirou’s empathy is his praying for the demons he has slain to find a good resting place in the afterlife.

3. He Will Sacrifice Himself for Strangers

There are few people who would sacrifice themselves for those they care about, and even fewer who would sacrifice themselves for an outright stranger. During the Final Selection exam to become a demon slayer, Tanjirou sees a fellow competitor in a life-threatening situation and tosses aside his own safety to save them. He goes head-on against a grotesque demon with no regard for his own safety and only concerned about saving the other person. It’s just unfortunate that the other competitor left at the first opportunity to save his own life.

4. He's a Clever Fighter

Although he had no experience fighting before, Tanjirou had a sense of combat from his very first encounter with a fellow demon slayer in Giyuu Tomioka. He recognized that he was outmatched by Giyuu but still managed to trick Giyuu into letting his guard down by taking advantage of his underestimating him. He plotted so that while he would be knocked out by Giyuu, he would still throw his ax in secrecy to kill Giyuu. The plan failed but it would’ve worked on any ordinary human.

5. He's Unbelievably Determined

Tanjirou has more determination than most of us; once he gives himself a goal, he does not stray from it. He’s wholly dedicated himself to saving his sister and nothing will get in his way of accomplishing that. When he’s forced to spend nearly two years working on the task of cutting through a boulder, he never gives or abandons hope. He works hard enough to slice through the toughest boulder any of his mentor’s previous students have ever faced.

Final Thoughts

Tanjirou Kamado has built a reputation for himself as an inspirational protagonist. He’s kind, self-sacrificing, courageous, determined, and clever, and though he is often outmatched by his situation and the people he faces, he’s still a wholesome character that is easy to admire. He has shown that he is capable of letting his anger get the best of him, but Tanjirou does a good job of mostly keeping his cool. We are curious to see if there’s a flaw in there that might arise, perhaps we’ll see his kindness get the better of him. Are you a fan of shounen’s newest protagonist? If I’m not consuming, then I’m probably trying to make them myself.
