From the moment we meet Zenitsu, we know that he expresses his feelings easily, especially when it comes to women! He seems to want to marry every woman he meets but his method of begging, crying, and clinging to them is not the most flattering strategy. Zenitsu also expresses his fear readily. He doesn’t try to pretend he is someone he is not and lets everyone around him know when he is not comfortable in a situation, which is almost always. While his loud outbursts of emotion can be annoying at times, we need Zenitsu’s comical balance for Tanjirou’s serious and tragic tale!

Zenitsu is well-known in the series for being a coward, afraid of nearly everything he comes across. This even includes the little old lady who tends to their wounds when Zenitsu, Tanjirou, and Inosuke are injured!
Being around other Demon Slayers doesn’t seem to increase his confidence much, though Zenitsu hates being apart from Tanjirou and Inosuke, fearing that he will die when they leave him. In the end, Zenitsu seems to fear death more than anything else, even though he also fears being alone to a great extent.

Kimetsu no Yaiba boasts one of the kindest protagonists in Tanjirou, but Zenitsu is not far behind him in this regard! Though he might hate stepping into action, when his friends are in danger, Zenitsu is sure to be there to help in whatever way he can.

He shows his loyal nature early on when he defends Nezuko’s box from Inosuke, despite knowing there was a demon inside. He trusts Tanjirou above all else and his loyalty is usually unearthed when Tanjirou needs him the most. Zenitsu is also attached to Nezuko and will do anything to protect her, as seen when he travels into the dark forest alone to make sure she is safe.

Though Zenitsu believes himself to be useless, he actually harbors some of the most powerful abilities in his lightning blade. He can only use his ability when he has passed out, so Zenitsu isn’t aware of his true strength, even after making it through the Final Selection with the other Demon Slayers. When he has accomplished what he needs to, Zenitsu will awaken with no knowledge of what he has done.

The impact of this is rather tragic, as Zenitsu will continue to believe he is useless. Though he has saved people and fought hard to get where he is, he will only believe he is a coward. Yet this also makes him all the more strong, for when he does actually stand up for his friends in moments that he is awake, he is not relying on any elemental powers. Even though he believes he is worth nothing, he is still willing to protect the things he believes in.

Most of all, we are constantly surprised by this self-proclaimed coward’s willingness to be courageous! Zenitsu uses what strength he has to protect what he believes in and to help his friends. Even when he is beat down over and over by Inosuke, he continues to protect the box because he knows that it holds something important to Tanjirou. Even when he is left alone on the roadside by Tanjirou and Inosuke, he still follows them into the dangerous forest because he is worried about the group.
