3. Jyu-Oh-Sei

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: September 29, 2012 - March 23, 2013

Thor and his twin brother, Rai, two strong and determined characters, are cast off to a forsaken planet by unknown masked men after witnessing the suspicious death of their parents. Given only the choice of using a beam knife and a smelly satchel, they explore together in search of civilization on the primarily plant based world. They soon discover the plants have the upper hand and other agendas. Only the strong survive; the ones who throw away their humanity and become the beasts humans once were.

What all of these anime have in common is that every character is thrown into the lion's den, and are only given specific items to aid them in their survival. In the case of Rai, he can only rely on a beam knife and satchel while his enemies have an overabundance of tools to use at their disposal. This limitation is what creates the thrill factor of the survival game, since you can only fight your way through every obstacle with what's provided. Ganta and Rai are both placed in a world they both had no place being in due to an unfortunate circumstance they had no control over. The action grows intense in each scene as both characters are put under severe pressure, and have to act fast otherwise it may cost them.

4. Gantz

  • Episodes: 13

What happens if Kei fails to adhere to the rules? Only the higher power knows of his fate. Just a word of caution: Gantz is not for the weak at heart, but neither is it as simple as it looks. Kei must witness acts of rape, gruesome murders and must come to terms with all of it, while doing his very best to understand why he's here in the first place.

Gantz is a popular series in Japan which saw a movie release, showcasing much of what the anime explained. Kei is killed instantly without reason, and now he finds himself racing against time as he must use his skills to survive at all costs. A higher power has all the control over the destiny of each protagonist, and so they can play whatever game they want with them as they please. This sick fantasy is what creates the game of survival, where both Ganta and Kei are constantly pushed to their limits, testing their morals in order to see another day. When the exit seems to be closing in, another extreme test is placed upon them creating even more risk along the way.

Fate/Zero depicts the events of the Fourth Holy Grail War—10 years prior to Fate/stay night. Watch as Kiritsugu must fight his way through a battle royale in which no one is guaranteed to survive.

If you’re anything like me, “Deadman Wonderland” is an anime that has most likely kept you at the edge of your seat saying, “one more episode! Show me what happens next!” From start to finish with the plot twists and turns, the drama, the struggle of good against evil, and of course the cool fighting scenes, what’s not to like?

One of my personal favorite parts is how everyone’s Branch of Sin is different giving them the different powers. I want Nagi’s ability personally.

I think it’d be cool to make orbs of blood that explode like bombs. I also enjoyed the undertakers and their almost anti-hero roles to subdue the prisoners with branches of sin, who should be the villains because they are in jail, but they usually are the worst ones of the bunch… it’s very… unique and yet slightly confusing when you think about it. Gah! It’s the hero’s journey! That being said, I have six shows for you that I think are similar to this one! Check them out if you enjoy genres such as action, shonen, drama, romance, horror, sci-fi and more!

Following the dark fighting, theme of Deadman Wonderland, Elfen lied is a slightly ecchi, horror, romance, and science fantasy anime. It follows Lucy, a Diclonius who escapes from her prison by destroying everything with her powers.
Once outside, she is Nyu, a seemingly innocent person who can’t speak. Diclonii are different from humans. They look similar, but have two small horns on their heads which give them vector magical powers. The vectors look like hands and allow them to attack and kill others.

Lucy/Nyu is aided by Kohta and his cousin Yuka to help discover who she is, and why Nyu can’t speak, among other things. All the while, other Diclonii come to hunt down and kill the queen, Lucy. Kohta is dragged in as well to try and make sense of the horrible acts commited against the Diclonii and why they are so violent.
This series has many fighting scenes similar to Deadman Wonderland, so try it out! Don’t forget to check out the opening song, Lilium, and see if you can catch the parodies of major works of art in it as well!

2. Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)

Mirai Nikki is similar to Deadman Wonderland based on it being a psychological thriller, full of romance, and the protagonist being forced to fight in a battle royale.

After being ousted by Deus as the 1st diary holder, he must survive and kill the other 11 diary holders. His weapon and source of knowledge is his phone which tells him what will happen to him over the next 90 days.

4. s-CRY-ed

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: Jul 2001 – Dec 2001

s-CRY-ed is big on the sci-fi, cause the users have powers, romance between some of the characters, shonen, adventure, and fighting back against the system.
Here’s another Tokyo-has-been-affected-by-some-major-disaster anime! Similar to the setting in Deadman Wonderland, some people develop powers because of the disaster. They are called alter users. Using their thoughts and willpower, they can materialize their alters be it in armor form, or taking the form of another being to help them fight.
One alter user just has the ability to go really fast and his alter is a car!

Kazuma is your typical rough around the edges, hero who dislikes rules and regulations, but has a soft spot for a girl who is like his sister. Most of the series is narrated through her alter powers. Ryuho is the strongest Member of HOLY; a group of alter users that serve under HOLD. HOLD exists to rule this disaster stricken land and the alter users.
As fate would have it, Kazuma and Ryuho cross paths one day, and wouldn’t you know it, they get into a fight! This nonstop fight continues throughout the whole series turning into a very comical rivalry as they try to beat each other senseless.
At first, the story is Kazuma against Ryuho and HOLY. Then it turns into Kazuma and Ryuho against a representative from the mainland government, and then finally against the government itself. Can they survive till the end? Who wins? And what caused this accident that gave people these powers?
Check it out to find out!

5. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

  • Episodes: 25 + 5 OVA + 3 movies(1 released, 2 planned)
  • Aired: April 2013 – Sept 2013

This anime, just like Deadman Wonderland, is another dystopian, heart stopping anime with twists and turns at every corner, and of course, plenty of action. This anime is set in a much farther future. Now 100 years into the future, people behind heavily guarded walls that are more than 45 meters (~150 feet) tall.
All of that changes one day when a 60 meter (~200 feet) tall Titan bursts through one of the walls. The hole it makes, allows for other titans to come in. They kill humans on the spot by viciously eating them.

The story then follows Eren Yeager, his sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert. Eren is unwillingly, at first, thrown into the role of hero after his mother is brutally killed by a Titan.
Then, the three characters join the military to learn more about protecting the city. Eventually though, no longer content with defending their own home, they join the Survey Corps to get out of their town and into the outside world which is crawling with vicious Titans. They seek answers and methods on how to beat the Titans permanently.
This anime has to arguably be one of the most successful anime in recent years. I highly recommend it!

6.Guilty Crown

  • Episodes: 22
  • Aired: Oct. 2011 – Mar. 2012

Finally, one more anime dripping in action, romance, and sci-fi is Guilty Crown. Welcome to a dystopian Tokyo in the year 2039. 10 years before, On December 24th 2029 a virus simply known as the “apocalypse virus” crippled Japan.
This day is forever known as the “Lost Christmas.” The UN sent an organization called the GHQ to help Japan, which successfully did help Japan recover… however, Japan is now at their mercy.

Shu Oma is a regular high school student until he encounters Inori Yuzuriha. While they are escaping from the GHQ who are hunting Inori down, Shu is entrusted with a vial. Little does he know, that when he accidentally breaks it, he suddenly gains the “Power of the Kings.”
This allows him to pull weapons, known as voids, formed by the power of people’s souls out of people with his right hand. Using Inori’s void, they fend off the GHQ and set out to save Japan from the GHQ and rid the world of this horrible virus.

This concludes my recommendations for anime similar to Deadman Wonderland! I’m sure that everyone’s opinions will be different, but these shows really stood out in my mind when I thought about shows similar to Deadman Wonderland in the sense of motifs, style, plot, and genres.
This was actually a very hard list to compile. The more I thought about it, the more shows like Black Bullet, Ergo Proxy (one of my personal favorites), and Tokyo Ghoul, among others, came to mind.

Deadman wonderland was a show that I watched in one shot. I actually was recommended this show myself, and as soon as I sat down, I couldn’t stop! If I had to pick a show to start with of these six, I would have to pick Mirai Nikki because I also tried to one shot that show as well! If you’re in the mood for a good old throwback, I recommend s-CRY-ed as a perfect place to start.

Please let me know what you think by firing off in the comments below! Am I right on the money? Is there a show you’d drop from my lineup and replace with another? Let me know!

Till next time,
