Similar Anime to Shinmai Maou no Testament (The Testament of Sister New Devil)

1. Masou Gakuen HxH (Hybrid x Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul. 2016 – Sep. 2016

Kizuna Hida hasn’t been able to take full advantage of his new ability until one fateful day. His older sister calls him up and invites him to transfer over to a strategic defense school who houses some of the greatest defense forces in all of Japan. Like some of those students, Kizuna is a gifted individual who possesses the HHG (Heart Hybrid Gear) who a certain group of otherworldly intruders would like to possess. In order to defend the country from the ongoing attacks from these sinister beings, Kizuna, along with a few busty girls are going to have to make things work. Kizuna’s HHG is meant to complement the other girl’s strengths and in order to reach their pinnacle, they will need his help. For that to happen Kizuna has to sexually pleasure them, only then will the big guns come out to play.

Masou Gakuen HxH is a peculiar anime. It demonstrates a strong emphasis on lewd acts that are committed by Kizuna to his female partners. Frankly, it’s no different from Basara and his harem of gorgeous girls. Kizuna and Basara both perform stimulating sexual acts with the females they’re surrounded by and by doing so, it strengthens their bond and also elevates their power level. Despite what it looks like, both Kizuna and Basara aren’t complete perverts. Sure, they do get aroused by performing those tasks, but who wouldn’t? Basara was exhorted into having a magical bond made with Mio and Kizuna was instructed to keep the girl's vital signs up in their HHG. Ultimately they’re put in that situation for the girl’s best interest.

2. Hagure Yuusha no Aesthetica (Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul. 2012 – Sep. 2012

Thirty years prior to the start of Hagure Yuusha no Aesthetica, Akatsuki Ousawa was one of several people selected from Earth and sent to other worlds. Not everyone was able to return, but Akatsuki was one of the lucky ones. He was sent to Alayzard to defeat a dark lord named Garius prior to making his return. Unlike other fortunate people who brought back trinkets from their otherworldly experience, Akatsuki brought back the dark lord's daughter, Miu. Now with Miu posing as his little sister, they will train to one day master their powers at a special school called BABEL. It is there that they hope to be able to serve all of mankind with their potential.

One of the first things that might jump out at you when viewing these two series is that both male main characters are heroes that were called upon to save the world. They weren’t summoned in an orthodox manner, however. They were elevated to hero status but not by their own accord. Regardless of how they became heroes, Basara and Akatsuki’s power is undeniable to us. They care deeply for their friends and would do anything to keep them safe, which is exhibited in both anime. The most interesting dynamic that these two shows share is that both Mio and Miu are daughters of demon lords who end up living together with the main characters and pose as their younger sisters. Throw in some fanservice and you got a receipt for a good time.

3. Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita. (I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job.)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct. 2013 – Dec. 2013

The story tells a tale of a teenage boy named Raul Chaser who was studying for his hero exams in order to become a hero. His ultimate goal was to defeat a demon lord and eventually have others label him a hero. Unfortunately for Raul, that never happened because the demon lord he was planning on going after had already died prior to the completion of his hero exam. After seeing his dreams ultimately cut short, he decides to take a job at a local magic shop. Everything changed however when a female named Fino Bloodstone applied to work at the magic shop. He noticed right away on her resume that she was the daughter of the deceased aforementioned demon lord. How will these two get along when you have a hero-in-training and a fallen demon lord’s daughter in the mix?

A daughter of a fallen demon lord receives protection from a heroic human. Does that sound familiar? It certainly should! With what seems to be a running theme on this list, it’s only fitting that we get our first similarity out of the way. Raul meets Fino and despite not earning the hero status, he becomes one anyways in order to preserve the fallen demon lord’s daughter. It’s similar to how Basara a former hero, becomes one once again to save Mio from all who threaten her. Despite being a demon, Fino applies to become an employee of a magic shop to live a care-free normal life. In the same token, Mio also wants to live without the scrutiny from power-hungry demons trying to kill her for the crown.

4. Isuca

  • Episodes: 10
  • Aired: Jan. 2015 – Mar. 2015

Shinichirou Asano is a high school student who’s had it rough. He’s had his parents run off on him for Europe, leaving him to fend for himself. He’s now dealt with having to survive on his own with minimal resources. A job would be handy to have but he recently got fired from that. Disappointment continues to rear its ugly head for Shinichirou when he gets attacked one evening by a centipede creature. Luckily for him, he is a saved by a gorgeous high school student named Sakuya Shimazu. What’s better yet, Sakuya’s family needs a housekeeper and Shinichirou is perfect for the job. He tries to make things right by attempting to save what he thought was a human girl, but it turned out to be a nekomata, which is a two-tailed demon cat. Shinichirou needs to capture the nekomata and Sakuya enlists herself to aid him.

One of the most prevalent similarities to these two anime is the strong emphasis on occult themes. In Shinmai Maou no Testament, you have a demon lord’s daughter and a succubus living with Basara. Comparably, in Isuca we’re treated to a familiar who is able to transform into a large two-tailed demon cat or use her human form when needed. It makes things all the more interesting when we see the interactions with Sakuya, who is an exorcist and Tamako, the aforementioned familiar. The final parallel between these two shows are the main characters receiving servants through unique circumstances. We already know Mio becomes a servant to Basara thanks in large part to a master-servant pact conducted by Maria. Tamako becomes the familiar of Shinichirou spawned from a misunderstanding by Shinichirou. He assumed he was saving a human female, only to find out that wasn’t the case.

5. Maoyuu Maou Yuusha (Maoyu ~ Archenemy & Hero)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan. 2013 – Mar. 2013

The war between demons and humans has brought havoc and despair the last fifteen years. Yuusha, the strongest warrior of the human realm is dissatisfied with their advances towards the demon realm. Yuusha decides to push towards the demon queen’s castle. Upon entering the castle he is shocked to find a remarkably beautiful red-headed queen, who is in need of some assistance. Yuusha is perplexed by the offer to ally with her and decides to initially turn it down. The demon queen rebuts and brings the war to the forefront, claiming that the humans are more united than they’ve ever been before and the kingdoms have been prospering as a result. If the war were to end, the Southern Nation’s aid would be cut short and it would leave many to starve. It’s then that Yuusha is convinced and he agrees to a pact with his former enemy.

This selection might already attract some of the ire from readers out there. The reasoning would be because Maoyuu Maou Yuusha is simply not an ecchi anime. It doesn’t rely on fanservice to sell a story. Say what you will however but there are some similarities between the two that can’t go unnoticed. The first one being that they both have a fantasy/supernatural vibe to them. The next one being that both female leads are red-headed demon lords who end up having some sort of relationship with the main characters. Finally, there is Onna, a power female swordsman from Maoyuu Maou Yuusha who draws some parallels to Yuki in that they both have feelings for the main characters and that they are superior sword fighters.

6. Highschool DxD

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan. 2012 – Mar. 2012

Issei Hyoudou is your prototypical pervert who doesn’t contribute much to society. His perversion garners much attention from around the school, as peeping on females is repulsive. One day an unexpected turn of events enables him to go on a date with another girl. Just when everything seems to be going great, the girl reveals herself to be a fallen angel. She then brutally murders Issei and his potential dreams of having a harem one day, or so we thought. A sultry top-class devil by the name of Rias Gremory revives Issei and allows him to become her servant. Issei initially struggles to find his new lease on life after his nightmarish first date. He joins the Occult Research Club and is introduced to many new females, much to his satisfaction. It’s then he realizes his chances of being a harem king are not too farfetched.

It should come as no surprise that this has made its way back onto the list. It really is the anime that has the most in common with Shinmai Maou no Testament. It all starts with the supernatural elements that play a large role in both anime. Whether its demons appearing in the human world or humans battling it out in the demon world, there’s a clear-cut amount of occult action to advance the stories. As much as we sell the action, it’s easy to see right through that with all the fanservice that’s showcased throughout each series. There is unrelenting nudity between both shows. Character-wise, both Mio & Rias are red-headed busty demon girls that have a long lineage of royalty in their blood. Mio is extremely loyal to Basara as is Rias to Issei.

Final Thoughts

That will conclude our updated version of a previous article here at Honey’s Anime. 6 Anime Like Shinmai Maou no Testament [Recommendations] / 6 Anime Like The Testament of Sister New Devil [Recommendations]

The announcement of sequel series Shinmai Maou no Testament (The Testament of Sister New Devil: BURST) came as little surprise after the resounding success of its prequel. Relentless ecchi fan service sells well, who’d have thought? If you’re going to do ecchi, you may as well go all the way with it, and that’s the attitude that Testament takes, with blu-rays that make you wonder “is this just hentai?” The answer of course being no, but yeah a little bit.

It can be hard to find anime in the ecchi genre that are genuinely interesting to watch however, as sometimes all else is forgotten in pursuit of fan service. On the bright side this means that some true gems do rise to the surface, providing action, laughs, and sometimes plot. No not that kind of plot, the other one. So sit back and check out these masterpieces of fan service.

1. Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou (Demon King Daimao)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 3rd 2010 - June 19th 2010

With dreams of becoming a high priest so as to help others, you can imagine Akuto Sai’s disappointment after being told that he’s destined to become the next Demon King. Understandably his classmates are a bit wary of him as well, although he has drawn the attention of a few of the girls around school. Now, one or two of them might be trying to kill him, but a harems a harem right? Join Akuto in his efforts to prove that Demon Kings aren’t always the bad guys, and in doing so maybe pick up a few cute girls along the way.

Although Testament is a bit more full on, both shows’ main purpose is to provide ecchi fan service, which they do an excellent job of. Testament and Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou both feature a main character who is incredibly strong, but also has negative assumptions made about them, despite their desire to fight for good. For that same reason they both also have a number of delightful female followers, who just won’t leave them alone. The two shows have so much in common that if you liked Testament it would be hard to find a reason not give Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou a watch.

2. High School DxD

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 6th 2012 - March 23rd 2012

How to tell if a date is going badly: she turns out to be a fallen angel and brutally murders you. After such a poor night out, perverted teenager Issei Hyodo is lucky enough to get resurrected by the voluptuous devil Rias Gremory, who also happens to be the most popular girl in school, and president of the Occult Research Club. Now part of Rias’s peerage, Issei has to adapt to his new life as a devil, though fortunately the harem gathering around him does make it much easier.

Despite some differences in character dynamics, High School DxD and The Testament of Sister New Devil: BURST feel very alike in terms of atmosphere, genre and fan service. The main difference between the two is that High School DxD can come off as whacky at times, when the fan service reaches peak levels, however both still have some excellent story driven moments and action scenes. Although High School DxD’s fan service isn’t quite as borderline-hentai as Testament’s, it’s still pretty high level and often more frequent. Much like Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou, High School DxD is so similar to The Testament of Sister New Devil that if you like one, you will almost certainly enjoy the other.

3. Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai (So, I Can't Play H!)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 6th 2012 - September 25th 2012

Your average teenage pervert, it all starts going downhill for Ryousuke Kaga after he meets beautiful shinagami Lisara Restall. As it turns out, he’s only got three months to live. Thankfully Lisara offers to help him stay alive, but only in exchange for his help keeping her in the mortal world. Unfortunately that involves letting her drain all his perverted energy, which sure makes reading ecchi magazines a whole lot less fun.

Dakara Boku wa H ga Dekinai is yet another show based around demons which shares a lot of similarities with Testament. Once again, the ecchi levels are off the charts, with both our protagonists having a host of cute girls surrounding them, who are always finding themselves in awfully lewd situations. Although not quite as intense as Testament of Sister New Devil, Dakara Boku wa H ga Dekinai has some great fight scenes and fan service, and is a great pick up if you find yourself running out of cute devil girls (which can be a serious problem).

4. Trinity Seven

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 8th 2014 - December 24th 2014

There are many things about Arata Kasuga that even he doesn’t understand, the main one being how he managed to cause a Breakdown Phenomenon that destroyed his entire hometown. Now attending the Royal Biblia Academy, Arata is determined to learn more about his power, and find his missing cousin Hijiri, who might be the only person who can tell him what really happened that day. To that effect, the school headmaster advises him to gather the Trinity Seven, the school’s seven most powerful mages, to aid him, and as luck would have it they all also happen to be beautiful young girls.

As with Testament, Trinity Seven once again gives us our insanely overpowered protagonist, and a swathe of girls who cling to him like metal to a magnet. One of the surprising things about both series, is that unlike our usual harem leaders, these guys are totally up for it. This mixes things up a bit with the character dynamics, making them both not quite as repetitive as some ecchi series can be. With a stronger focus on plot than some of the series in this list, Trinity Seven is a great series if you want something more than just fan service.

5. Motto To LOVE-Ru

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 6th 2010 - December 22nd 2010

Despite living with three of the galaxy’s princesses, being constantly chased by an unstoppable assassin, and being harassed by numerous other girls at school, Rito Yuuki does a pretty good job of living a normal life. In fact the biggest problem he has is being unable to confess his feelings to his crush, Haruna Sairenji. Third princess Momo however, has much bigger plans for Rito, harem plans. Because if you go by space rules then technically polygamy isn’t a problem.

Both Testament and Motto To Love-Ru are currently some of the highest quality ecchi anime about, with excellent animation and art. Testament’s Maria and Momo from To Love-Ru are like two peas in a pod, both constantly keeping our protagonists on their toes in their harem creation plans. Although both feature very different stories, if you went to Testament for the fan service, then Motto To Love-Ru will certainly not disappoint. To add to that, with its sequel To Love-Ru Darkness and Darkness 2nd already out, there’s plenty of ecchi to go around.

6. Campione!

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: July 6th 2012 - September 28th 2012

Killing the God of War comes with some responsibilities attached, the weight of which Godou Kusanagi is really feeling after suddenly finding he has become a Campione, a God Slayer. With his new title, Godou is expected to take care of troublemaking Gods, a task easier said than done. But as a host of attractive young ladies begin to show an interest in his new found power, things suddenly start to look up.

Acquire super powers, get girls: there’s definitely a pattern here. Both Testament of Sister New Devil and Campione see our main protagonists using their immense powers to stop evil, and acquire harems. Campione’s theme of old gods keeps the show feeling fresh, but still very similar to Testament in its genre and contents. Much like Testament, Campione includes a bucket load of ecchi fan service, excellent magical battles and a solid enough plot to keep things interesting. Campione is great if you want something a bit more light hearted, although we’d still advise doors closed, headphones on.

It’s rare for an ecchi anime to be as full on as The Testament of Sister New Devil Burst, but with a plethora of excellent fan service series out there, there’s plenty left to watch after this season sadly draws to a close. Just rejoice in the fact that there will be an OVA, and it will be glorious.

So what do you think, were the selections to your taste? Or maybe you prefer something with more plot. Or perhaps something with more “plot”? We’d love to hear your selections in the comments!
