3. Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice)
- Episodes: 130 min
- Aired: Sept, 2016
Shouya Ishida was very different as a child as he is a young teenager. Once, Shouya was popular and seen as a leader in his class. Things changed though when a deaf girl named Shouko Nishimiya joined the class and became a target of bullying for Shouya and his friends. When Shouko’s bullying is finally noticed, Shouya becomes the fall guy and is isolated from the class. Now as a teenager, Shouya has become stoic and brooding with an inability to see others the same way as he once was able to. Shouya life changes once again though when he once more runs into Shouko and with hesitance, Shouya begins to try to make amends for what cruel acts he did her long ago.
When people are different than us in any way or form it can sometimes be hard to understand what goes through their hearts and minds. That’s seen in Eve no Jikan where some people—like the main character Rikuo for example—just doesn’t understand how a robotic being can have a heart thus being affected by cruelty and segregation. This theme is also seen in Koe no Katachi with Shouko’s handicap not being understood by the kids and thus causing her to be bullied. However, both Koe no Katachi and Eve no Jikan have characters who eventually learn what compassion and kindness means which is a message we think more people in this world could appreciate. We loved Koe no Katachi thus why we think it’s the perfect recommendation for those who love Eve no Jikan but want a more romance orientated anime movie.

5. Metropolis
- Episodes: 109 mins
- Aired: May, 2001
Metropolis is a rising city that is home to both humans and robots alike. However, as Metropolis grows, the city itself has become more and more filled with violence, criminal activity and prejudice. Making matters worse, Dr. Laughton has been suspected of trading organs and that causes detective Shunsaku Ban and his young nephew Kenichi to enter Metropolis to see what is going on. Entering the Dr.’s lab, Kenichi finds a robotic girl who he escapes with and is forced to protect when various people go after her. Who is this robotic girl and what does she have within her that has caused such a chase? Find out in Metropolis where the city might be shining from the outside but inside it is dark and filled with trouble.
Based off an older movie of the same name, Metropolis focus on showing the darker side of robots coexisting with the human race. Just like in Eve no Jikan, Metropolis constantly shows themes of humanity becoming gods among men and how a lack of empathy for something that isn’t human can cause a world of issues to follow. While Metropolis is nearly 17 years old, that doesn’t stop this movie from being a classic tale courtesy of the legendary mangaka and creator Osamu Tezuka. While Eve no Jikan shows the beginning of a possible change in humans living with robots, Metropolis deals with a world that has already begun to both rise and fall because of this union. If you love classic sci-fi anime movies then you will enjoy Metropolis.
