2. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

  • System/Platform: PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One
  • Publisher: Ubisoft
  • Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
  • Release Date: Oct 29, 2013

The Assassin’s Creed series returns, though this time we take to the seas. Our new story follows Edward Kenway a newly turned pirate who aims to stop a plot that centers around the Templars, the Assassins long running enemy. Kenway must somehow use his new pirate like standings to infiltrate the various groups that have the answers he seeks. Outside in the modern day world, Abstergo, the cover group for the Templar, continues to use the Animus to explore the timelines. Having stolen samples of Desmond Miles, they task the player who was recently hired, to dive into Kenway’s past. Once more a nefarious plot is underway and only the Assassins can stop the world from falling into the hands of the Templar.

Usually we wouldn’t compare any Assassin’s Creed game to the Uncharted series. However, with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag we can make this comparison work perfectly. Players control Kenway and explore the world as a Pirate/Assassin, able to use their ships to go to different islands in search of treasures or fight other pirates on epic on sea battles. The added ability to travel to various islands and search for unmarked goodies just screams Drake’s usual tasks in every one of his games. For those that love the Assassin’s Creed games don’t fret though, as Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag stays true to the great fighting mechanics of the series past, Kenway is still able to use the various Assassin tools the series is known for. Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed games now finally have a camaraderie in the form of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

3. Just Cause 3

  • Developer: Avalanche Studios
  • Release Date: Dec 1, 2015

Rico Rodriguez returns in Just Cause 3 for a new mission, one on a personal level. Rico’s home country of Medici has been taken over by a new dictator. Ready for anything and armed with his trust hook and armada of resources, Rico won’t stand for his homeland being run by this crazed individual. However, Rico’s own vendetta won’t be easy. Standing before Rico is the dictator’s military might. Luckily Rico isn’t the only one who wishes for Medici to be free as plenty of others in a resistance group feel the same as Rico.

Just Cause 3 brings players back to the open world exploration and insane gunfights of the previous Just Cause titles. Like the Uncharted series, Just Cause 3 aims to give players a wide berth of things to explore and areas to find, just on an even larger scale than Uncharted games. Similar also is the gunfights in Just Cause 3. No fight doesn’t feel epic in some nature and that is a trait very much true in Drake’s various experiences. Plus let’s be honest, Rico and Drake are just cool main characters.

4. Quantum Break

  • System/Platform: Xbox One, PC
  • Publisher: Microsoft Studios
  • Developer: Remedy Entertainment
  • Release Date: Apr 5, 2016

Sometimes a simple ideal of helping a friend out can be anything but simple. Jack Joyce is asked by his long time best friend Paul Serene to help in Paul’s big science demonstration. Jack get more than he bargains for when he learns that the science project Paul has been working on has to do with time travel. What’s worse is that when Paul shows Jack the Time Travel device in action, things goes astray and both are exposed to some kind of energy that ends up giving them both time altering abilities. Adding to the already odd scenario a future version of Paul shows up claiming that he has seen the world’s end and wishes to alter it in his own way. Now Jack must stop his best friend before he destroys the very fabrics of time…

Quantum Break is indeed one of the coolest games we’ve ever played. Players control Jack as they slow time and do other cool feats as they get involved in shootouts with enemies as well as use Jack’s abilities to solve the occasional puzzle. During breaks in chapters in the game the player will then watch a TV like episode play out where decisions they made in game alter the story and narrative of the TV show. While Jack isn’t going to be spelunking anytime like Drake in Uncharted, the game share a very similar gameplay experience as both are third person shooters with plenty of wicked cover based gunfights. In fact while it may be pushing it a little, if you really think about it Jack’s adventure is just like an Uncharted game, new and full of harrowing experiences. Regardless though if you love Uncharted we know you’ll enjoy Quantum Break.
