I don't know. It does start with a worned out trope, but I loved Kuroko no Basket so I'll probably watch this too.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. This looks like nothing new to the genre, but the manga is very popular and I'm sure the anime version will live up to the hype. At least I hope so?

Sora Kurumatani is a short boy that will never be good at basketball.

When he was in middle school, he was never allowed to be a member of the starting team due to his height. He decides to enter into Kuzuryuu High School (Nickname: Kuzu high) where he has hopes of joining the basketball team. However, the team is more or less on the verge of being abolished and he’s not really able to play basketball there at all.

Still, Sora is very passionate about basketball and while bumping heads with his fellow members, they all grow together. Constantly facing crisis after crisis, just how will these basketball team members rise this time...?

Three Episode Impression

Even though this isn’t the first anime to showcase basketball, and even if the original premise is quite similar to other sports anime, Ahiru no Sora definitely caught our eyes. Yes, this is your typical story about a school club that’s pretty much dead until this unbelievably talented guy shows up, shaking things up and making everyone understand that natural talent is more important than genetics. However, Sora is the only one who takes basketball seriously enough, since the other members of the team are just bullies and more focused on brawling than anything. With an upcoming face-off against another high school team, a shocking revelation about Momoharu’s past, and a potential love story involving the women’s team star, what’s not to love about Ahiru no Sora? We're so looking forward to the rest of the series!

Characters & Voice Actors List

Sora Kumatani

Voice Actor: Yuuki Kaji

Sora has just moved into his grandmother’s house near Kuzu High to be close to his mother who has recently been hospitalized. Cheerful and forward-thinking, he hates to lose. Sora is very passionate about baseball, so he sets about fixing up the courts that have become a gathering spot for delinquents. His most treasured possession are the basketball shoes that his mother gave to him. He’s great at three-point shots and has a complex about his height.

Momoharu Hanazono

Voice Actor: Yuuma Uchida

Momoharu is the head of the basketball team. He has an amazing jumping ability that allows him to make dunk shots, and while he is good at rebounds and blocks, he is actually really bad at making regular shots. He played basketball when he was in middle school, but quit for some reason. He’s short-tempered and will fight with anyone who wants to.

Chiaki Hanazono

Voice Actor: Katsuyuki Konishi

Chiaki is Momoharu’s twin older brother. When they were younger, he was influenced by Momoharu and started to play basketball. He’s excellent at reading the situation which makes him the type to give out orders. He loves sweets and girls, and though he has approached many girls, every single one has shot him down. It’s an unknown hidden power, but he’s actually very good at looking after others.

Kenji Natsume

Voice Actor: Kishou Taniyama

Kenji is from Hiroshima Prefecture, and his nickname is ‘Tobi’. Tobi has an unparalleled amount of talent for basketball and has nothing but scathing words for people who are lazy. Still, he is very careful about his approach when helping the new members of the basketball team learn. He loves his younger sister and is very kind towards her.

Kaname Shigeyoshi

Voice Actor: Mamoru Miyano

Kaname’s nickname is ‘Kimochi’. He’s a taller player who is great at hook shots. He’s from Nishijou Middle School, a school famous for its basketball teams, so he did play when he was there. However, in high school he is actually focusing on chemistry. He doesn’t speak often, and while he does get dragged into conversations often, he can be a bit rough with his word choice. He has no stamina and collapses quickly.

Shinichi Yasuhara

Voice Actor: Taku Yashiro

Shinichi’s nickname is ‘Yasu’. He was a member of the Karate club, but he ended up punching one of his upperclassmen once and was placed on probation from the club. Until Sora came along, he just hung out with Momoharu and Chiaki in the basketball club team room. He has a serious personality for the most part and is very athletic.

Ryuhei Nabeshima

Voice Actor: Chado Horii

Ryuhei’s nickname is ‘Nabe’. When Sora appeared, he just kind of went with the flow and joined the basketball team. He gets mad with himself when he can’t improve.

Masahiro Saki

Voice Actor: KENN

Masahiro’s nickname is ‘Chakki’. Along with Shinichi and Ryuhei, he has no experience playing basketball. He thinks of his friends often though and is often with Ryuhei. Masahiro is vexed over how he can’t apply what he’s practiced to become a better player.
