How are you enjoying Dokyuu Hentai HxEros so far, everyone? Yeah, the reaction is mixed here as well, especially how they handle the censorship in the TV broadcast version, and how the story revolves around using kinkiness to beat alien invaders is very silly—why can’t they just go for foursomes (or fivesome if you include the dog Rumba) every night to replenish their power? It’s certainly more efficient than doing anything else. Maybe the foursome is an ultimate move that is going to be used to beat the final boss?
Dokyuu Hentai HxEros is an oddity because of the aforementioned odd censorship and just for the fun of it, let’s compare the anime adaptation to the original source manga series to see what alterations were made due to the limitation of a 12-episode anime format and whether the manga can shed light on the anime’s weird censorship. And lastly, this comparison will be a good opportunity to decide if reading the manga is the definite way to experience Dokyuu Hentai HxEros or not.
We’ll go for the three-episode rule to compare the two versions while avoiding any potential spoilers. We think that’s a fair enough length!
Anime Episode 1 vs Manga Chapter 1
The anime adaptation of chapter 1 has some minor changes to the scenes and is almost faithful to the manga, but there are two things the anime has altered. The first major change is the omission of Retto’s first encounter of the censor bug back in grade school: Retto and his friend are trying to peek at the panties of passing school girls, and are getting chased by a censor bug. This flashback gives context as to why Retto has ero power and is a chosen candidate for HxEros, but in the anime, Retto just has erotic powers with no proper explanation.
The second major change is the censor bug draining the idol and her audience of their erotic energy at a small event. The anime’s version is arguably better with a boob shot, but the context with regards to the censor bug’s power is ignored—not a deal-breaker, we’d say. The censor bug in chapter 1 has the power to obscure any lewd material by covering the nether regions of a person or picture with a star-shaped censor-thingy. In the TV broadcast version of the anime, it’s being used as a censor bar instead of a special ability, so the special ability persists after the censor bug is killed?
Anime Episode 2 vs Manga Chapter 2
Episode 2 is largely faithful to the manga with a few minor changes, the most notable is the third fetish of the guy whom Kirara shot down for being too friendly—in the manga, the dreams of watching Kirara wearing a bikini, a maid uniform, and wanting Kirara to clean his ears are the guy’s intentions if he dates Kirara. In the anime, they made the guy more perverted by replacing the ear-cleaning fantasy to one where Kirara is wearing a skimpy dog-bikini costume. Other than that, the anime is plagued with tons of censored scenes that made episode 2 less enjoyable to watch. Though we don’t consider this a problem in the long run because these censors will be removed in the Blu-ray and DVD releases.
Anime Episode 3 vs Manga Chapters 3-5
There are some slight alterations like the removal of Momoka getting bopped on the head by Sora for being too pushy towards Kirara and the addition of an anime-only scene with Kirara and Momoka getting along after Momoka criticized Kirara for not stopping the censor bug because Kirara couldn’t harness her ero powers. The phone call between Kirara and her mother, Hoshino Maika in chapter 4 is omitted from the anime, and we’d argue the removal of this scene from the anime isn’t that important because the call has nothing to do with the current story. Sure, the mother-daughter scene gives the readers a bit of insight on Kirara’s character, but that brief scene can be added in the anime in a future episode where Maika makes a proper introduction.
However, there is one big change that will ultimately make the manga version a better experience compared to the TV broadcast anime and that is the depiction of fanservice. Some are minor like less crotch detail when Kirara jumps over an obstacle while chasing the censor bug in a school in a school swimsuit. The biggest alteration of all is the part where Kirara enters Retto’s room at night, shows off her newly-bought lingerie, they sleep together in one futon and get interrupted by Sora. In the anime version, Sora gropes Kirara while sleeping, and in the manga, Sora gropes Kirara and sucks on one of her nipples. Yeah, it sounds petty, but Dokyuu Hentai HxEros’s main appeal is the fanservice and the anime delivering a more sterile experience ruins that appeal. Will the anime redo this scene in the BD version? Doubtful. Is this a one-off alteration? We hope so.
Final Thoughts
Anime adaptations, considered by a vocal few, are inferior compared to the original source. It’s largely not true because animation and voice acting are more expressive than still pictures and text (insert fanboys arguing about books vs films), but at the hands of the right people, an adaptation can be superior to the source material. Dokyuu Hentai HxEros should’ve been handled by studio Xebec (Ladies versus Butlers!, To LOVE-Ru Darkness, Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san) because studio Xebec knows their details and have unparalleled fanservice animation skills. Is there hope for anime fans? Yes, but at this point, it’s best to go with the manga and wait for the uncensored BD version.
But what do you think of the anime so far? Are you still going to watch the censored TV broadcast version of Dokyuu Hentai HxEros for your weekly dose of lewdness, or read the manga instead?
