Kanokon Preview / Plot (No Spoilers)

It’s a story as old as time itself. Boy meets girl, girl turns out to be a fox youkai, boy gets endlessly pursued by fox girl who tries to seduce him at every waking moment. Along the way, loli wolf-girl shows up and competes with fox-girl, and boy finds himself quickly thrust into the harem protagonist lifestyle. Ok maybe that’s not the usual story you’re used to, but that’s Kanokon in a nutshell.

Kouta is a small, shy boy from the countryside who has come to the city to attend high school. He apparently has a unique and interesting smell, as he attracts animals and youkai alike, as witnessed when the busty fox girl Chizuru and the petite wolf loli Nozomu both begin to vie for his affection. The series isn’t overly complicated, but it does cater to those who enjoy the staples of harem ecchi shows. Because of its charm, we thought it was definitely worth an Anime Rewind.

Love Is In The Air

We’ll say this about Kanokon, we have never seen a faster romance in anime. Chizuru and Nozomu literally fall in love with Kouta at first sight and in Nozomu’s case, it was at first smell. There’s no lengthy exposition, flirting, or shy moments in Kanokon. It’s full-on attack mode, and Kouta-kun himself is the prize in their contests.

Ecchi, Ecchi, and more Ecchi

A lot of people love some good ecchi moments. If this is true for you, you’re going to love Kanokon. It’s basically non-stop “doki doki” heartthrobs from beginning to end every episode. Although it’s not life or death for Chizuru and Nozomu to win over Kouta, you wouldn’t think that was the case from watching them. They do everything in order to woo him, from sneaking into his bed, his bath, and even forming barriers to trap him in a love nest. These girls have tried it all.

Supernatural Elements

Being youkai, these girls are supernatural creatures from Japanese mythology. There’s also something special about Kouta himself to have him interact with these girls. Throughout the series, there are some fights and action sequences in the show that appear on occasion. Chizuru not only feels attracted to Kouta for his presence but also gets a massive power boost in her spiritual energy from being with him. It’s another element to the show that keeps things from feeling too stale.

Final Thoughts

Kanokon is a fast-paced romance ecchi comedy with supernatural elements, and we’re very thankful that it exists. Have you watched it at all? If so what were your thoughts on it? We’ll be doing more Anime Rewinds, so if you’d like to discuss this or any others feel free to leave a comment below!
