Three Episode Impression

Keiji Takeda found himself thrust into a series of strange events while waiting for his girlfriend Touka Miyashita. After witnessing what looks like his girlfriend wearing odd garb, Keiji learns that this person goes by the name Boogiepop. Aiming to defeat evil spirits, Boogiepop harnesses the body of Touka to allow himself a form in this world. Is Boogiepop really a supernatural hunter of evil or has Keiji’s girlfriend lost her mind? With mysterious events plaguing the city the answer to said questions can reveal what is real and what is fabricated.

Boogiepop and Others originally wowed us light novel readers here at Honey’s Anime with a story that constantly does what most mystery series can’t, it kept us guessing and questioning everything. The original anime series—that released roughly 19 years ago—did the same and left us wondering if we’d ever see another Boogiepop entry in the anime world. Finally, Boogiepop and Others has graced us fans and we’re happy to say it’s holding firm to the light novel its based on. We know from reading comments from others that many are confused by the plot and are constantly trying to piece together clues seen in the series but we’ll say this. Boogiepop and Others is a story that loves to mess with the mind and make the viewer think one way but equally another. Even three episodes in it can be quite difficult to diagnose what is reality and what is meant to be a red herring. Yet, those who love mystery and supernatural stories will truly enjoy Boogiepop and Others for how well it keeps the viewer hooked to what’s happening on screen at any given time.
