Bungou Stray Dogs 3rd Season Introduction and Story
The latest season of Bungou Stray Dogs started by showing how a young Chuuya Nakahara and Osamu Dazai began their partnership. Chuuya led a group of young delinquents in the past, while Dazai was a valued recruit of the Port Mafia. As their adventure plays out, the two learn the truth about a traitor in their midst, as well as the truth about where Chuuya’s powers come from. This was one of the most surprising moments of the season, learning that Chuuya is actually housing a supernatural being named Arahabaki!
After looking into the past, we move back into the present with the Detective Agency. This season delves further into the lives of several of our favorite characters, including Kyouka and Atsushi getting some closure from their parents’ deaths and learning that Gin and Akutagawa are actually siblings! This time, the main villain of the season is Fyodor, one of the most dangerous gifted people in all of Yokohama. Fyodor set out to destroy all the gifted in the city, poisoning the leaders of both the Detective Agency and Port Mafia to pit the two groups against each other. In the end, the two opposing groups of gifted came together to overcome their enemy, with the strongest duo being Atsushi and Akutagawa, despite their animosity toward one another.
1. Vivid and Enjoyable Characters
This season of Bungou Stray Dogs brought back some of our favorite characters, and it also introduced us to a few new ones that we loved! An example is Katai Tayama, who was an invaluable part of bringing Fyodor down with his technological expertise. We also met Natsume Soseki, the mastermind behind everything to do with the gifted in Yokohama. No matter how many characters are brought into the series, each one is uniquely lovable, so much so that it’s hard to pick which ones are our favorites!
2. Gorgeous Animation (As Always)
Yokohama is one of the most beautiful settings, and Bungou Stray Dogs does it justice with its animation style. Each one of the characters is intricately drawn, with such detail in their body language and facial expressions that every emotion is easy to see. Bones is a brilliant studio, and you can see why in every scene of this anime! With such precise animation, the show becomes even more realistic.
3. Most Interesting Villain Yet
Though we enjoyed watching the Port Mafia and the Guild face off against the Detective Agency in the past, Fyodor was easily the best villain yet in Bungou Stray Dogs! Fyodor has a simple demeanor, yet also harbors a mysterious and vicious nature which makes him pose a real threat. He is intelligent and savage—in many ways, he is similar to Dazai! Dazai’s victory over him in the end was well deserved, but it also came with a hint of anxiety that perhaps Fyodor would not stay locked up for long…
1. Takes a While to Get to the Plot
Though we love how much time is devoted to developing each character in this season, it almost makes the early part of the series seem like an entirely different show. The different segments of the show can feel disjointed, and they don’t tie together at the end as well as previous seasons have done. We get a glimpse into the past with Dazai and Chuuya, it jumps into the present with a lot of different small character arcs, and then finally moves into the main plot of the series. The characters make this show interesting, but if their stories are not linked together, the anime can feel forced at times.
Final Thoughts
Bungou Stray Dogs’ third season was an exciting and emotional journey full of interesting characters and the same amazing Bones’ animation. Though the series takes a while to get to its main plot, we still loved every moment of the epic feud between the gifted of Yokohama and Fyodor’s group!
