Code Geass: Akito the Exiled Screening and Panel [Anime Expo Field Report]

What You Need to Know:

  • If you love Code Geass, then you are going to love this OVA set. From the get go the show sets up a complicated world that has so many aspects to delve into. First off is the fact that we are now focusing on the Europia United war front. This is an interesting viewpoint to be taking as it not only details the struggles of forces that still have their independence and are fighting off Britannia, but it also displays the situation of refugees in the Code Geass world. These two factors actually play a huge role in defining the social atmosphere for the first episode at least (the only episode we were able to watch during the screening).
  • That aside, there are a couple other reasons that you will probably adore Code Geass: Akito the Exiled. One is that the action is absolute glorious with Knightmares and other mech units moving with an intensity that magnifies the emotions of the pilot inside. Tying in perfectly with the physical action is the amount of planning that is involved with each battle. Just like in the first two seasons of Code Geass, we are shown what is going on in the control panel room and are given a deep look into how strategic geniuses map out every part of the battlefield. The dialogue and voice actors are also exceptional, in both the Japanese original and English dub. Finally, and for some this might be the most important thing, is the fact that there are some major cameos that ensure everything feels connected (Suzaku definitely makes an appearance and perhaps even Lelouch).
  • Just to clarify for those unaware of where Akito the Exiled fits into the series, this OVA takes place between season one and season two of Code Geass. That is to say that the Black Knights have formed, but Lelouch has not quite returned from his “death”. With that in mind, the specifics of the story follow a young man, Akito, from Japan who is now a refugee in Europia United and has joined the military. He is under the command of Leila Malcal, whose compassion is a level above that of most of her colleagues. Together, the two start digging into the internal and external issues that plague Europia United. From simply watching the first episode of the OVA set, it is safe to say that this is a side story worth investing your time into. Happy viewing, Geass lovers.
