Everybody enjoys a good laugh, and this winter season has brought us quite a few Comedy anime series to unwind after a long day. Most of these are shorts, with three full length (24 min.) series hitting our screens as well. Some of them are cute, some are silly, and some premises are straight up ridiculous. There’s also a much awaited sequel along with magical girls, office romances and hilarious girl-talk.
So if what you’re looking for is some funny anime to sit back and relax with, here are some Comedy offerings from this winter 2016 season!
1. Ansatsu Kyoushitsu TV (Assassination Classroom) 2nd Season
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Jan 8, 2016 – Currently Airing
Continuing from the first season, the students from class 3E are still at it trying to kill their alien octopus-thingy teacher Koro Sensei. After coming as close as they ever have at the end of last season, they face not only the challenge of the assassination at hand, but also other assassins after Koro Sensei and the large reward offered to whoever succeeds.
The love the students are developing for their teacher is becoming obvious but they still continue working hard to fulfill their duty. Koro Sensei continues his silly, pervy ways and the femme fatale Irina Jelavic seems to seriously be crushing on Tadaomi Karasuma. Old rivals return, there’s possible romance sprouting, and… a giant pudding! Many of us had been waiting for the continuation of Ansatsu Kyoushitsu, and so far, we’re not disappointed!
2. Dagashi Kashi
- Episodes: N/A
- Aired: Jan 8, 2016 – Currently Airing
Kokonotsu Shikada is the heir to his father’s snack shop in a little rural town the middle of nowhere. However, much to his dad’s chagrin, he doesn’t want to take over the shop. He wants to be a manga author! Hotaru Shidare is also an heir, except it’s to a snack empire. She eats, lives and breathes Japanese snacks and she desperately wants Kokonotsu’s father, You Shikada, to come work for her family’s company. So she’ll do all in her power to convince Kokonotsu to take over the shop so the well-known You can join the Shidare Company ranks.
Hotaru’s intense obsession with Japanese snacks really makes the whole of Dagashi Kashi. She’s super weird and sticks out like a sore thumb in this little rural town. Not to mention she has the weirdest eyes in anime this season. If you want to learn way too much about Japanese snacks and laugh your butt off at the way Hotaru brings excitement to Kokonotsu and friends’ quiet lives, don’t miss one of the season’s most awaited series, Dagashi Kashi!
3. Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desu Kara
- Episodes: N/A
- Aired: Jan 12, 2016 – Currently Airing
One of the cute and funny little shorts we’re lucky to have this season. Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desu Kara or “I’ve had enough of being a magical girl”, is as short and sweet as its main character, Yuzuka Hanami. Little Yuzuka finds a magical creature, Miton, who scouts her to become a magical girl. The only catch is... her magical girl outfit is… a bikini!? Don’t worry, there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for that. This is her story dealing with the realities of being a magical girl.
She really hates that her magical girl outfit is a swimsuit and wonders if it’s because Miton is kind of a perv. (In her defense, he does seem a bit shady…). Then her BFF Chiya gets involved and we still have more to go! So check it out and see what adventures Yuzuka and her friends get into and how much abuse little Miton can take. Go on, it’s only 4 minutes long!
4. Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 10, 2016 – Mar 27, 2016
The most recent installment of Nurse Witch Komugi-chan shows us Komugi Yoshida’s struggles as she tries to balance her dream of becoming a famous idol and actress like her friends Kokona Saionji and Tsukasa Kisaragi. One day, after finding and treating an injured little bunny-like creature called Usa-P she is tricked into becoming a magical Legendary Girl who fights bad guys adding even more to her plate.
Another magical girl anime with a shady mascot. Three actually! Komugi is a very energetic and positive girl, but she can also be kind of naïve and clumsy which makes for great slapstick anime comedy. And watching the little manipulative Usa-P and his rivals Tanu-P and Neko-P use the girls as their pawns for their own competitive ends can be cute and entertaining. It’s also kind of funny that the 3 BFFs don’t recognize each other when in their Legendary Girl transformations. This one’s a full length episode series, so if you’re into the Magical Girl-Cute Mascot combo, knock yourself out!
5. Ojisan to Marshmallow
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 8, 2016 – Mar 25, 2016
Another anime short! This one is about a workplace relationship between Hige Habahiro, who loves marshmallows and his office co-worker Iori Wakabayashi who seems to be obsessed with him. Hige is kind of shy and awkward, while Iori is extremely forward and shows her affection for him in every way she can think of.
Ojisan to Marshmallow is almost like Ore Monogatari! in the sense that the main love interest is a man who wouldn’t be traditionally considered attractive. And yet, he has a really cute girl fawning over him and going out of her way to spend time with him and get him to notice her. Iori knows about Hige’s obsession with marshmallows so she constantly uses them as bait to get him into awkward situations. The interactions between Hige and always-straight-faced Iori are pretty hilarious and adorable. It’s really short, so why not give it a try!?
6. Oshiete! Galko-chan
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 8, 2016 – Mar 25, 2016
This anime short is about the daily life of Galko-chan and her friends Otako and Ojou. Gal-chan is tall, beautiful and blunt and she’s the most popular girl in her class. Otako is kind of nerdy and quiet but she’s good friends with Galko, and Ojou is a well-mannered and well-spoken girl, though a bit ditzy. This show is basically about the three having girl-talk, which, if you’re a girl, you know it’s not all about rainbows and kittens.
This has to be my favorite anime short this season. The name puns are super obvious: Galko (gyaruko) is a typical Gyaru with her blonde hair, full face of makeup and fashionable style; Otako is an otaku and Ojou is a proper lady (ojou is the formal word for young lady in Japanese). And the questions that Galko and friends raise during their girl chats and the way they approach the topics will have you ROFL. Join in and find out what high school girl-talk is all about! The only bad thing? The episodes are only 7 minutes.
7. Sekkou Boys
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 8, 2016 – Mar 25, 2016
Miki Ishimoto just got her first job after college at a talent agency. Not only that, she’s the manager for a new boy band! The only catch is, the band members are Greco-Roman stone busts of Saint George, Hermes, Mars, and Medici. Miki will work as hard as she can to help these unusual pop stars reach new heights!
If you’re sitting there wondering “What? Why??”, unfortunately, I can’t answer your question. The premise of this short is just as ridiculous as it sounds and, as of yet, we haven’t found out why these statues are alive and how they became a boy band. But if you’re into Greco-Roman sculptures, absurd storylines or if you have a spare 7 minutes every now and then, give Sekkou Boys a peek. Who knows? Maybe one day they’ll answer all our questions!
8. Sushi Police
- Episodes: N/A
- Aired: Jan 7, 2016 – Currently airing
With the surging popularity of Japanese food all over the world, new fusion style versions of sushi have also taken flight all over the world by adding things like cream cheese and avocado. To protect the integrity of Japan’s prized delicacy, the 9th unit of the newly formed World Food Culture Conservation Organization has been given the task of taking down those who dare sully the purity of sushi. They are the Sushi Police.
This 3 minute CG short follows Honda, Suzuki and the android Kawasaki (yes, really). They take extreme measures to ensure that sushi will not be sullied and their methods are becoming more over-the-top each episode. They go around all over the world finding any restaurant big or small who dares serve non-traditional sushi. The first episode is of course, in California. Sushi Police seems like a caricature of itself, though being only 3 minutes per episode, it’s a bit hard to tell where exactly it’s heading.
Conclusion
There is more than enough to keep us laughing this winter season. And since most of these are short series, you could easily watch all of them! It would take you the duration of one full length episode to watch all of the anime shorts we’ve mentioned. You can give yourself a little dose of funny any time of day or watch them all back-to-back. As for the full length shows, fans of Komugi-chan can enjoy a new installment of it in Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R; Ansatsu Kyoushitsu was definitely a highly anticipated continuation, and a lot of people were waiting for Dagashi Kashi; this writer included!
The winter 2016 season has truly delivered in the Comedy department. There are quite a few outrageous plots, sassy girls and enough magical girls to go around. I’m just hoping the cravings for sushi, marshmallows and Japanese snacks don’t end up giving me a fluffier winter coat… *nom nom nom*
