[Ecchi Harem Fall 2017] Like Shimoneta? Watch This!

The Ecchi Harem genre is filled with its own heroes and villains. First, there are the shows that make us laugh with how they implement tried-and-true jokes and humor from previous series. These tend overcome the often crass nature ecchi comedies typically have and deliver a solid viewing experience. Next, there are the shows that completely embrace the lowbrow, wallow in it, and make you feel even more embarrassed that you somehow made it to episode 12… We can’t lie, we love them all, for different reasons ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). For fans of this genre, Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai was a godsend. It was hilarious, a little bit edgy, and had more than its fair share of sexual humor thrown in. Today, we’re going to be looking at what we loved about Shimoneta and two shows that offer just as many laughs as well.

About Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai (SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul. 2015 - Sept. 2015

In a dystopian future where mankind’s social norms are strictly controlled, being a normal high school student is a daily challenge. In the world of Shimoneta, Japanese citizens have a collar which monitors and censors words that are spoken, enforcing harsh penalties for breaking public moral laws. Enter Tanukichi Okuma, a boy who followed his idol Anna Nishikinomiya to her prestigious high school which has a good record of having high public morals thanks to her being student council president. Unfortunately, on his first day, he is framed for groping on a train and is rescued by the mysterious Kajou Ayame. Ayame turns out to be his classmate and leader of the infamous public indecency group known as SOX. Although he had planned to strictly join Anna in her goal of making the school a more moral environment, he is pulled into Ayame’s schemes of regaining their freedom of expression in the lewdest ways possible.

  • Episodes: 10
  • Aired: Oct. 2017 - Dec. 2017

After confessing his love to class president Kousaka Akiho, Shinozaki Haruka is overjoyed when she accepts. However, after they begin to date, Haruka realizes just how much of a pervert Akiho really is. She has an in-depth knowledge of sex and sexual acts that rivals the most avid pornography connoisseur, and is anxious to investigate what Haruka’s fetishes are for the two’s growth as a couple. Add in characters like Haruka’s flirty childhood friend, his playfully curious little sister, and a whole host of other lewd individuals that populate his school, and Shobitch is one of the raunchiest yet romantic anime you’ll come across.

Three Major Similarities Between Shimoneta and Shobitch

1. Both Shows Have Shockingly Lewd Leading Heroines

Not to say that there is no such thing as perverted female individuals, but the lengths the characters in these two shows go to would give even the horniest teenage boy reason to pause. Shimoneta’s Kajou Ayame has a habit of causing a huge scene with her spectacular displays of sexual innuendo and exhibitionist escapades. She does this to make a statement against the government, but also because she personally enjoys it.

Kousaka Akiho has been raised from a young age by her mother to have everything she needs to win herself the man of her dreams. Of course, being trained with that kind of mindset from infancy would cause a person to become... different. These two shows have female characters displaying a level of lewdness that rivals the dirtiest oji-san in any hentai work, and they’re not afraid to show it.

2. These Two Schools Are The Strangest Around

For a school with a reputation of high morals, Shimoneta’s Tokioka academy contains a high number of outlier deviants. From the student council president Anna, to the acclaimed student artist Otome Saotome, as well as science club leader Hyouka Fuwa, these characters are just plain strange. It sort of makes sense for this to happen for this world. Pushed to the edge of censorship and not explained the basics of reproduction, the mind is poised to search for an answer to deep, personal questions. But there’s a limit, and these characters have far surpassed it!

In the case of Shobitch, the characters are just plain strange to the point where you aren’t sure how on earth they all accumulated in one location. Shobitch has just about every fetish and orientation checkmarked in its character roster, and some push Akiho herself to the point of acting as the straight man in their eccentric schemes. While it goes without saying that this is simply one of those things only anime can pull off, there’s a point where even anime logic starts to break down, and then there’s Shobitch. Fortunately, it’s outrageous in just the right ways.

3. These Male MCs Just Want a Normal Life

Everyone knows that typical harem ecchi protagonist. You know, the one who is surrounded by women and his only difficulties in life come from him being an indecisive idiot. Those guys deserve whatever they get in life, and sympathy isn’t coming easily from anyone. The main characters in Shimoneta and Shobitch deserve to have a moment of silence, however. They’ve been through a lot.

At every point in his daily school life, Shinozaki Haruka is embarrassed by the women in his life, usually in a public setting. Either Akiho wrongly accuses him of having fetishes she misunderstands him as having, playing to them in plain sight, or his childhood friend and little sister cause huge misunderstandings. While this is aggravating for him, Okuma, Tanukichi from Shimoneta runs the risk of being sentenced to prison for the rest of his life should they get caught. All for playing some lewd pranks on the school, it seems a bit much. These two just can’t catch a break!

Liked Shimoneta? Watch Imouto Sae Ireba Ii (A Sister's All You Need)!

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct. 2017 - Dec. 2017

Hashima Itsuki is a 20-year-old novelist, but the types of books he writes aren’t for everyone. He writes light novels that follow the exploits of the main character falling in love with his little sister, and exclusively on that subject. His sister complex ways have earned him the ire of his editor, but sales are flourishing and he has his group of friends to keep him company. Imouto Sae Ireba Ii chronicles the daily lives of Itsuki and his fellow light novel writer friends as the conversations and the subjects of their books get more and more lewd with each episode.

Three Major Similarities Between Shimoneta and Imouto Sae Ireba Ii

1. Both Are Completely Over-the-Top

If you thought wearing only a thin cloth and a pair of panties on your head like the characters in Shimoneta was strange, then prepare to see even more over-the-top shenanigans in Imouto Sae Ireba Ii. While the show takes place in a modern Japan setting, the characters themselves are anything but normal, and their imaginations and writings go further off the deep end than you might think possible.

Fellow novelist Kani Nayuta has a deep crush on Itsuki and doesn’t hold back in her flirty advances towards him. She often finds herself fantasizing about him in impossible ways and lets him know directly. The cast often gets together and plays games that put their minds to work, and the things they come up with are always perverted to the highest level. It might not approach the levels of a terrorist organization solely dressed in women’s panties, but when you think about these individuals existing in the real world it just gets all the more strange.

2. The Censors Are Against Them

Whether it’s trying to escape the Japanese government or simply avoiding your bossy editor, both shows have characters that aren’t allowed every freedom they desire in regards to their expression. In Shimoneta, it’s very likely that anyone discussing anything that’s deemed negative to public health will serve jail time, making it impossible to speak one’s mind. In Imouto Sae Ireba Ii, Itsuki can’t put some of his more outlandish little sister-themed ideas into his books because his editor just won’t allow it, usually with good reason. In both shows, you can feel for both; but at the same time, the idea of trying some of their stunts in the first place would get somebody trying to stop them at some point regardless. With that in mind, it’s hard to say they’re completely in the right. Still, it’s really funny to watch most of the time.

3. Somehow Everyone Gets Naked

Whether you’re an exhibistionist or a nudist, one way or the other, your clothes are coming off. Kajou Ayame from Shimoneta and Kani Nayuta in Imouto Sae Ireba Ii have one thing in common: their inability to remain fully clothed. Ayame fights against injustice in her classic garb, and Nayuta fights boredom while writing by stripping herself and anyone who visits her room. For ecchi fans, it’s not like this type of development doesn’t come with the territory. In fact, it is highly encouraged ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

Final Thoughts

When it comes to ecchi comedies, lewdness makes the world go round. Thankfully, we don’t live in the world of Shimoneta, or our ability to enjoy such shows as Shobitch and Imouto Sae Ireba Ii would be exceedingly difficult. Did you find anything else in those shows that reminded you of Shimoneta or watch other shows this season that did? Let us know in the comments!
