As one of the best movies in the genre to come out EVER, Mononoke Hime presents us with a glorious world where right and wrong have no clear distinction and spirits still roam the lands. From one of the greatest animators in history, Hayao Miyazaki puts his own influence on the real life issues such as environmentalism. Mononoke Hime focuses on a prince named Ashitaka who journeys to discover the source of a poisoned boar that attacked his home. During this trip though, he finds out more than he ever thought possible and may even find love with a mysterious wolf girl that will turn his world upside down.

Distinction Between Good and Evil

Good and evil are entirely blurred when looking at Mononoke Hime objectively. On one hand we have Ashitaka who is trying to protect his village and the traditions they have alive. He finds value in the forest and its spirits and seeks to ultimately live alongside them happily as his village has always done. When he encounters Lady Eboshi he finds an enemy because her goal clashes with his own even though Lady Eboshi’s main goal is to save and make the lives of her people better for them. Neither of them are truly villains but because of the objectives of each there is a war that both will be on opposing sides for.

The Animation

Hayao Miyazaki is known for his animation and for good reason. He is an animator who is so meticulous about each scene that he must go through each section and fix each frame by hand. With this labor intensive process and the gorgeous character that originate from his mind, he can bring to life worlds that could otherwise only be dreamed about. Such is the case with Mononoke Hime, one of his most famous works. The animation is stunning and consistent throughout the anime and it draws you in without lagging at any point.

The Dialogue

Sometimes the dialogue in anime can seem juvenile and for the older crowds who watch it it can be repetitive. This is not the case with Mononoke Hime, the dialogue is natural and flows without dumbing down the viewer or being too complex for a younger audience. Much like other Miyazaki films, Mononoke Hime can be enjoyed amongst many age groups and backgrounds. This truly unique film achieves a dialogue that flows well and is appropriate throughout all interactions.

Final Thoughts

Mononoke Hime is a critical film to watch in any anime or film buff’s repertoire. Its history has helped the evolution of anime both in animation and storyboarding. There are many reasons to add this movie to your watch list, but rather than spoiling the movie with tidbits we would rather you go and watch the beautiful film. Hayao Miyazaki is a genius that made great contributions to the anime world, with one of his greatest being Mononoke Hime.
