The anime series Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau, aka Children of the Whales is one of our favorite for this anime season fall 2017, not only the animation, the characters and the plot caught us instantly, but also its soundtrack. We are loving the music from this anime, that is why we searched everywhere in order to meet the OP and ED artists behind these amazing tunes.

First, RIRIKO, the singer-songwriter who performs the opening, was approach by Honey-chan and Bombon, but soon after they left her with her broken guitar, they flew off looking for rionos. You should know that rionos is debuting with this theme song as a solo artist, but she has worked in the anisong industry as a composer for many years. She has composed song for artist like ChouCho, Reina Ueda, Little Glee Monster, Annabel and others.

Fans abroad would like to know how you came up with the name “rionos.” What is the meaning? Or what does it mean to you?

I wanted my artist name to have a mysterious aura, so I took the “ke” off the end of my nickname “Rionosuke,” which made it sound like something from the Greek language. I thought that sounded good so I went with it. There’s no deep meaning behind it, but I feel like it has a magical ring to it, and I still like it to this day.

You’ve been working in the music industry as a composer, but you are about to debut as a solo artist. Do you feel there are many differences between being a music composer behind the scenes and a solo artist in the spotlight? What are the challenges you face as rionos?

My work up until now has mostly been behind the scenes, but when it was revealed that I would be working as a solo artist, I felt that I got a lot of attention from people around me who had been waiting for this moment and were happy about it, which in turn made me happy. As an artist I’ll have to perform in front of people, so I hope to get used to people little by little.

As a music composer you have provided the music for several singers, can you tell us more about how you became a composer, who have you worked with? And are there any upcoming projects we should look forward to?

I entered the industry as a singer-songwriter, but while I was doing that I started composing and arranging songs for other artists who were in the same position as me. Little by little, my role as a composer gained more traction. Now, I make songs for all kinds of different artists such as the idol Yufu Terashima, Ryo Irei, Annabel, ChouCho, Reina Ueda, Little Glee Monster etc etc…

In your composition process, which part of the music comes up first? If it’s the melody, how do you arrange it? And how do you write the lyrics?
rionos_main_0906解禁-333x500 [Honey's Anime Interview] rionos (Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau, aka Children of the Whales)

When I’m making music for myself, the lyrics come first. For me, I not only like making music, but also the reasons and stories that lead to the creation of music. I think that’s more important. I think of music as a way to express feelings or energy and enjoy the process of turning images of that poetry, story, and world into sound. As for the method of creating songs, I think of the chord progression first, then start adding various instruments. I like weird chord progressions, so I’m always looking for new chords on my keyboard when I make music.

Our musical taste and sensitivity changes with the times, and we are always listening to new music that inspires us. So we would like to know, which music genres or artists are on your current playlist?

I love Akino Arai, so I’m always listening to her. For inspiration, I often listen to Icelandic music - it’s really individualistic and interesting. I also like calming music like Sigur Rós and Ólafur Arnalds. I once went to a music festival in Iceland on my own, Iceland Airwaves, and the lineup was full of amazing artists, introverted, modern, and trendy. It was then that I saw the artist mum’s vocalist, Mr. Silla’s solo show, and his music was super cool, like a bird living in the heart of nature. His sound is really stimulating and I still like it a lot.

Have you ever thought about singing in other languages other than Japanese to reach a wider audience? If so, which languages and why?
rionos_main_0906解禁-333x500 [Honey's Anime Interview] rionos (Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau, aka Children of the Whales)

I’ve made covers of English songs several times. I find it difficult to sing in English, but it’s fun and I enjoy doing it, so I’d like to keep trying. English songs reach a really wide audience across the world, and I’m really happy when I receive comments from people abroad on SoundCloud, Twitter, YouTube and so on.

Your latest project is the ED for the current fall anime Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau (Children of the Whales). The song is titled “Hashita-iro”, in which you acted as the composer, lyricist, singer and even piano. Can you tell us what is this song about, and how it relates to the anime?

The heroine of the anime is called Rikosu, and for certain reasons, she doesn’t have any emotions at first. However, surrounded by the protagonist Chakuro and various other characters, she starts to regain her human emotions. In a world where reality is harsh, she lives with people who are dear to her. I made the song using her strong way of living as the image. The song, too, starts off quiet and quickly gains power and energy. I hope that listeners feel like the song becomes more human, like Rikosu.
