Doki Doki Literature Club Preview (No Spoilers)
In classic visual novel fashion, you play as a male teenager protagonist. On your first day of high school, your childhood friend, Sayori, convinces you to join the literature club. You were reluctant at first, but after being introduced to the club’s cute members, you decide to join. At the literature club, members write poems and share them with the group. With each poem you read and write, you start to fall in love with the girl of your choice.
Monika Bio
Seiyuu Name: Jillian Ashcraft
Monika is the literature club president. She organizes future club events and assignments all by herself. Monika tries her best to keep everyone happy, and makes sure that the girls aren’t making you uncomfortable. Even when things look bleak, Monika keeps her smile and motions everyone to work as a team. We only see her in the school uniform, and boy does she flaunt it. Our favorite pose from Monika is when she leans to the side, and sways her skirt. Monika is has perfect proportions, and is the second tallest girl in the club.
Character Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)
Monika Highlights
1. She’s a Poet
Who doesn’t love an intelligent lady? Of course Monika would be into poetry since she’s the president of the literature club. Monika has a hard time expressing her feelings to you. Therefore, she writes all of her poems with you in mind. Sometimes it’s a code that you have to decipher, and other times she’s directly referencing you. The you in the game may not notice the obvious message, but we sure do.
In act 2, one of Monika’s poems reads:
“Save me
The colors, they won’t stop.
Bright beautiful colors
Flashing, expanding, piercing
Red, green, blue
An endless
Cacophony
Of meaningless
Noise
The noise, it won’t stop.
Violent, grating waveforms
Squeaking, screeching, piercing
Sine, cosine, tangent
Like playing a chalkboard on a turntable
Like playing a vinyl on a pizza crust
An endless
Poem
Of meaningless
Load me”
2. She Plays Piano
Wait, Monika is the club president, a poet, and a pianist? Now that’s what we call a triple threat! Throughout the game, Monika tells you how hard she’s been working on her song. Little did we know, the piano background music that we hear in the club room is actually the instrumentals for Monika’s song. Being a poetic genius, Monika uses her writing skills for the lyrics. She’s not much of a singer, but when we finally listen to Monika’s song at the end of the game, we feel like we truly understand her.
In her song, Your Reality, Monika starts off by saying “Every day, I imagine a future where I can be with you.” Such a sweet but strong line to open up the song. The following verses are metaphors for how the game is structured. Like the line “But in this world with infinite choices, what will it take just to find that special day?”. We feel the emotion in the lyrics and sympathize with her.
3. She’s Super Cute
Yuri, Sayori, and Natsuki each have their own set of special photos to unlock. Depending on how you write your poem, you get to spend time with one of the girls. But because Monika isn’t given a route, she doesn’t have a single special photo dedicated to her. Despite that, we still think she’s very cute. Monika has a very long brown ponytail and wears a large white ribbon. She always has a smile on her face and looks at you directly. Just look at her on the main menu. How can you say no to someone who’s literally reaching out to you?
4. Cares For Everyone
Monika cares for you a lot. She goes out her way to write you poems, a song, and gets rid of the girls who are causing you problems (more on that later). The best part is that Monika loves the real you, not the “you” in the game. She doesn’t know if you’re a boy or a girl, but Monika couldn’t care less. Even after you delete her character file, Monika still can’t help but love you. Monika eventually comes back to sing her song to you, as you reminisce about the happier times.
Monika even admits that she doesn’t hate the other girls. In fact, she really enjoyed the literature club, and wishes it never ended. Monika loved Natsuki’s cupcakes, and was looking forward to the school culture festival. Even though the other girls are dead, Monika takes the time to write a proper farewell letter. One line in particular reads:
“For the time it lasted, I want to thank you. For making all of my dreams come true. For being a friend to all the club members.
And most of all thank you for being a part of my literature club!
With everlasting love,
Monika”
5. She’s a Yandere
This is most likely the main reason why you love Monika. Monika gains self awareness and gets furious when she realizes she wasn’t given a route. Therefore, Monika messes with everyone’s character files in order to make them unlikeable. Monika eventually kills them off, no matter how hard you try to save them. She apologizes for the ghastly deaths you witnessed, but admits that she needed to do this in order to spend time with you.
Throughout the game, we see Monika making numerous attempts for us to notice her. During the glitch scenes, Monika will force her name into the text boxes. Sometimes, she’ll slowly reveal herself while you’re talking to another girl. Monika will make your cursor choose her, instead of the other characters. One time, Monika takes over Natsuki’s dialogue to convince you to romance her instead.
When Monika is finally alone with you, she calls you by your real name instead of your username. If you’re recording or live streaming, she’ll point that out, and even do a magic trick for your viewers. Monika wants to get to know you more, but before she does, she gazes into your eyes. We feel bad that the game developers didn’t give Monika a route, but at least Monika tries to spend time with us as much as she can.
We all have our unique fetishes, and Monika fits the yandere one to a T. Even more so in some areas. Did you agree with our highlights? What are some other reasons you love Monika? Let us know, and we’ll be sure to reply as soon as we can. Till next time!
