The premise is rather unique, but I like it! Looks like this is one of the few Isekai anime not focusing on people striving for power... not in a traditional way.

I don't consider myself a bookworm, but maybe this girl inspires me?

Synopsis

Urano Motosu is a girl currently living in modern day Japan. The day she was supposed to start a job at the library, the one thing she’s ever wanted, she passes away.

Still harboring angst for wanting to read many more countless books, she wakes up to find herself in another world as the young girl, Maine. She has a small body, but retains all of the knowledge she had from her previous life.

The stage of this tale is set in medieval times in the city of Ehrenfest, a city ruled by nobles with magical powers. With a rigid class system, this young girl Maine, who still retains all of her memories from modern Japan, struggles hard to get her hands on a book.

Three Episode Impression

With a lot of other isekai shows on air, is there a reason to watch Honzuki no Gekokujou or should we skip it? That was the burning question at the start of the season, but with every new episode, it became quite clear why we should not only give it a chance but also fall in love with this story. While other shows are about defeating monsters in a magical world or maybe just surviving with a bunch of airheads around, Motosu Urano’s (aka Maine in her new life) purpose in this fantasy land is pretty unique: she just wants to read all day! But here, books are prohibitively expensive and nowhere to be found...

That’s how Maine’s quest starts, with a need for trying everything at hand to craft something that resembles a book. With all her wisdom and wisecrack comments, unlikely for a little child living in a poor town, Maine not only helps her family but also wows them. Will she ever be able to create a book and show the world the benefits of reading? We definitely hope so!

Characters & Voice Actors List

Maine

Voice Actor: Yuka Iguchi

The protagonist. While she looks like a little girl on the outside, she’s an adult on the inside. She still has her memories of when she was Urano Motosu before she was reincarnated. She relies on those memories and starts to make books. She has Turi and Lutz help her as she gets sick and weak enough to get high fevers frequently. She takes charge when making books, using whatever means necessary and the environment around her to do so. Those around Main think she's a bit of an eccentric/oddball because of how sharp her mind is and how eloquently she speaks. She’s very kind and loving to those closest to her. She regrets things that happened with her mom before she was reincarnated and has resolved to treasure her new family more now.

Ferdinand

Voice Actor: Shou Hayami

He’s the chief priest. With the election campaign effectively in its final stages, he’s Maine’s guardian and tutor when she shows up at the temple. While from a noble family, he’s in the temple for his own reasons. After rising to become the chief priest from a temple priest, he single-handedly undertakes the temple’s practices.

Turi

Voice Actor: Megumi Nakajima

Maine’s older sister. She looks after everyone and is popular in town where everyone admires her. Turi’s a dutiful daughter who single handedly takes on helping the family in Maine’s place as she’s sickly. She wants to do anything she can to help and support Maine when she begins making books. After her baptism ceremony, she works as a seamstress apprentice. Inspired by Maine’s efforts to make books, she wants to work at Corinna’s shop as an apprentice since she looks up to her. For certain reasons, Maine calls her ‘my angel.’

Eva

Voice Actor: Fumiko Orikasa

Maine’s mother. She works at a dyeing shop. In this world, it’s a requirement to have good sewing skills to be considered beautiful. Eva is a beauty in both appearance and her sewing skills. She’s always worried about Maine as she’s often laid up in bed with a fever and is anxious about her future. That’s why even though she doesn’t know much about making books, she supports Maine with all her heart. Maine’s enthusiasm for making books looks just like Gunther when he’s doting on the girls, so she thinks, ‘it’s Gunther’s fault Maine’s strange.’

Gunther

Voice Actor: Tsuyoshi Koayama

Maine’s father and a guard of the South Gate. He’s a silly dad as he loves his wife and family so much his neighbors complain. Because he dotes on his daughter, he’s jealous of the people Maine talks to and when he tries to contest against it, he gets scolded by Maine. If Maine asks him to do something, he’ll happily accept. His motto is: ‘I’ll protect this village and my family.’ He cares more strongly and deeply for his family than anyone else, and he won’t hesitate to lay down his life if it’s to protect them.

Lutz

Voice Actor: Mutsumi Tamura

Maine’s childhood friend. He’s the youngest of four siblings and as his older brothers are always hard on him, he wants to leave home as quickly as possible. His dream is to become a traveling merchant. Inspired by Maine who never gives up no matter how hard it is or how much she fails, even when he has a bad experience going against his parents’ wishes, he takes his first step forwards towards his dream. After a certain incident, he feels indebted to Maine and has decided to help Maine as she’s weak. Even while Maine drags him around everywhere, he’s always excited to see what she’ll come up with next. He’s also in charge of making sure Maine stays well. He has a strong sense of responsibility and high ambitions.
