This has that sort of... rough yet unique appeal that other shounen/action series like Ushio to Tora, Hunter x Hunter, and JoJo.

I was going to say that the art reminded me of Ushio to Tora. Yes, you are totally right, Bee-kun.

Why does this remind me of Aguu though. The marionettes look like dolls. Angelic Layer?

Synopsis

When elementary school 5th grader Masaru Saiga’s father was killed in an accident, he inherited an enormous fortune. This lead to attempts being made on Masaru’s life. At the same time, Masaru happens to meet a young man named Narumi Katou who decides to help Masaru.

However, what came after Masaru were not humans, but rather puppet masters who possessed incredible amounts of fighting ability. Then one day, the two find themselves in a desperate situation against these puppet masters when a girl with silver hair named Shirogane who controls a marionette appears and saves them.

Then, these three individuals who met in Japan are dragged into a strange fate as the cogs of fate begin to turn…

Three Episode Impression

Karakuri Circus is an anime all about people who fight using puppets. Right from the beginning, we come across Narumi who tries to get people to go to the circus and apparently has a disease that makes him choke if he doesn’t make someone laugh every once in a while. Narumi runs into Masaru who is a little kid who has puppet masters coming after him. Then we meet Shirogane, a silver haired girl who is a master puppeteer. These three people join together so that Masaru can be safe and figure out what exactly he’s supposed to do. Karakuri Circus is very much a shounen anime in which you are thrown into the shounen action right at the start. You don’t have time to marvel at all of the puppet mastery or moves at first; you just see it as it happens, although it’s quite clear that Shirogane is super OP. Masaru is a whiny brat at the beginning who says really innocent things about his losing his mother and asks Narumi not to leave him like his mother did. Whether you like him or not, though, is really just a flip of the coin because I’m not quite sure I care for him at all, however he does get some sort of revelation of some sort and becomes strong by episode 3, but I can’t say I’m super amazed since it is a shounen anime. It’s not even the most logical either aside from him remembering that he should be showing strength. Then there’s Narumi who I find to be a bit ridiculous especially with the inclusion of his weird disease. Was this really necessary? Also, why does he know Chinese martial arts when he currently works for a circus and cannot live without making people laugh? And what do puppets have to do with a circus anyway? I’m thinking this show is a little all over the place so far, but I’m willing to keep going to see where it goes.
