It's rare to get a romcom anime that gives us an adult-like feeling since most romcom anime are often about high school love. While we do love the high school romantic comedy, there are times when we want a romcom similar to Watakoi. Luckily, we got one similar this past winter anime season called The Ice Guy And His Cool Female Colleague.
The Ice Guy And His Cool Female Colleague took place in an office setting with a twist: yokai or yokai descendants. It tells the romantic comedy story of Himuro-kun, a descendant of a yokai called Snowwoman. On the first day of his new job, he was frozen from nervousness, literally. He met a cool but kind woman named Fuyutsuki-san, who helped him with his nerves. It turns out that Fuyustuki-san is also his colleague, and from there, falls in love with her. Thanks to Himuro-kun's snow woman powers, everyone knows his feelings about Fuyutsuki-san except for the person herself. This is a simple office romantic comedy that we've been craving since Watakoi.
A Sweet, Romantic, Adult-Like RomCom of Yokai-Human Couples
Like most romcom anime, the main focus in The Ice Guy And The Cool Female Colleague is the relationship and interaction between the couples, especially the main couple. And just like most romcom anime, this series has been sweet and romantic. Throughout the series, you will see plenty of interactions between Himuro-kun and Fuyutsuki-san, and each interaction grows sweeter and more romantic. The actions and decisions that Himuro-kun made were more mature and thoughtful than some if not most romcom anime as he tries to impress or be closer to Fuyutsuki-san. This anime is also set in an office where most characters act professionally, similar to how people work there. So, it gave off a more mature and adult-like vibe than what you would see in other romcom anime.
One thing that makes this anime different from other slice-of-life, romcom anime is the fantasy concept given to some characters. The idea of having some characters being descendants of a yokai working like ordinary people was interesting in both story and character interaction. Each yokai descendant has unique traits specific to their ancestors that make it enjoyable to watch. They are nothing more than good add-ons, though. Their distinctive traits, such as Himuro-kun's creating blizzards and snowmen, only helped highlight the romantic scenes and gestures that this anime showed, making it even cuter to watch.
All Himuro-kun's Thoughts, No Fuyutsuki-san's thoughts?
Since this series primarily focuses on Himuro-kun and Fuyutsuki-san's relationship, we get to see and hear their thoughts on each other. It mainly shows Himuro-kun's thoughts on Fuyutsuki-san, usually accompanied by him using his snowwoman powers. Still, we rarely listen to what Fuyutsuki-san thought about Himuro-kun and their interaction. The one time that we probably could hear what she honestly thought was when they showed her being at home. We weren't sure if it was due to her personality or something else. Still, it would be nice to hear her thoughts in a bit of a similar fashion as Himuro-kun occasionally.
Simple Is Best
One thing that puts this whole series together is the simplicity. This romcom anime really was a simple office romance. Thanks to how simple this anime is, it managed to blend romance, slice-of-life, comedy, and some bits of fantasy into an enjoyable anime. None of the themes or ideas were awkward, underwhelming, or overwhelming, making this a perfect anime for those looking for a romcom, slice-of-life anime with a unique concept.
There aren't any fantastical dramas or actions and such in the series. The only fantasy aspect that was added in was the fact that there are people who are descendants of yokai. It doesn't affect the overall tone or theme this anime was trying to show. It's similar to a slice-of-life anime where they were just regular people. If you want to see more fantasy aspects, this might not be the anime for you. Unfortunately, we're afraid that the yokai descendants are what you will get for this anime.
