About Masou Gakuen HxH

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul, 2016- Sept, 2016

With alien forces appearing on the Earth ready for war, humanity takes up arms in a rather unusual way. Women with an aptitude for fighting are able to use a special type of battle gear called HHG or Heart Hybrid Gear which strengthens their skills and allows for them to defeat the alien threat. However, the HHG ability has for some reason only worked with those of the female persuasion and no man has been able to use the weapons, until now. Hida Kizuna is somehow able to use the HGG armament and is immediately summoned by his sister to attend a training school filled with beautiful girls. Hida might be the weakest HHG user around but the female warriors are about to learn that he does possess one ability that may change the tides of battle from here on.

College student Nomoto Yuuya just thought he was joining some friends in picking up some lovely ladies, which any dude who is single wouldn’t say no to. However, Nomoto quickly learns this female excursion is actually meant to kidnap some girls against their wills! Unfortunately for Nomoto and his “friends,” the girl they grab isn’t what anyone would call a normal girl. Her name is Hitomi and she is one of many people infused with DNA from animals to create powerful fighting beings. Infused with the honey badger, Hitomi isn’t too happy with Yuuya but for reasons unknown, she is charged with now protecting him from a source that seems to want him dead…

Three Major Similarities Between Masou Gakuen HxH and Killing Bites

1. Prepare for gratuitous amounts of fan service

There are times where writing similarities between some shows can be quite difficult for us here at Honey’s Anime but that isn’t the case with Masou Gakuen HxH and Killing Bites. All a person has to do is watch either show for more than a few minutes and they will see that both Masou Gakuen HxH and Killing Bites have tons of fan service. Look at Hitomi Uzaki, Eruza Nakanishi or Ui Inaba and you will see these girls are extremely well-endowed boasting oppai that can be quite unreal. The same can be said of some of the girls in Masou Gakuen HxH like Yurishia Farandole, Aine Chidorigafuchi and Scarlet Fairchild. Needless to say, if you were looking for eye candy like Masou Gakuen HxH then you’re going to want to see Killing Bites.

2. Tough girls

A lot of harem anime tend to have main dudes being the shining armor for the ladies by saving them from harm or being extremely overpowered. This theme though isn’t found in either Killing Bites or Masou Gakuen HxH as the ladies are the ones with brutal amounts of power. For example, Hida—the main male in Masou Gakuen HxH—is able to manipulate HHG armor but is only really useful by doing sexual actions on the girls to power them up via Climax Hybrid powers. Ironically, Nomoto Yuuya is also a male—this time in Killing Bites—who is nearly useless, too. We will talk more about the males of both shows in a moment but the highlight of Masou Gakuen HxH and Killing Bites is the girls who can beat down their opponents and don’t really need the men to help them much in doing so. Got to love anime series with strong girls who can hold their own.

3. Weak but semi-useful dudes

Now we mentioned a moment ago that the men of both Killing Bites and Masou Gakuen HxH are kind of useless but they aren’t 100% without some necessity. Hida from Masou Gakuen HxH is a leader—which still strikes us a bit strange—of his girls in the series and of course, with his abilities, Hida is able to make them stronger. They rely on Hida to keep them restored and in peak combat conditions which gives him a purpose. Killing Bites’ main dude Nomoto isn’t very useful to be honest beyond being a literal ATM for Hitomi in the show. However, there are some guys in Killing Bites who are extremely strong like Taiga Nakanishi who has tiger DNA—which should be obvious from the name Taiga—and Yugo Tani who can become a huge lion hybrid. That’s why we can’t say either show has completely useless male characters but they do take a secondary role at times to the lovely and scary female cast.

Many girls would hate having to switch schools during the most important time in their teenage lives—in this case freshman year of high school—but that logic doesn’t apply to Yuzu Aihara. With a can-do attitude and plenty of optimism, Yuzu looks forward to making some new friends and possibly landing herself a romantic partner. However, Yuzu’s attire—which is known in Japan as a Gal—attracts some attention from student council president Mei. What’s worse is Mei isn’t just the student council president but also Yuzu’s stepsister from her mother’s latest marriage! Yuzu is about to find her new school life starting off rather rough but maybe this can lead to something Yuzu has dreamed of and always wanted…

Three Major Similarities Between Masou Gakuen HxH and Citrus

1. Girls with attitude

Do you need some tsundere beauties in your anime life? Maybe you’re in the mood for girls who are quite aggressive in getting what they want? Well then, we have good news for you here at Honey’s Anime. Both Citrus and Masou Gakuen HxH are filled to the brim with girls that adhere to these archetypes. Both Citrus and Masou Gakuen HxH have girls who don’t take crap from people and are quick to get aggressive. In Citrus, Matsuri Mizusawa loves Yuzu—for reasons we won’t spoil—and is quick to try and destroy the bonds behind both Yuzu and Mei. Then you have characters in Masou Gakuen HxH like Hida’s sister Reiri who is willing to basically have her brother be a raving pervert to power up girls. If you were worried you wouldn’t get a cast of girls as diverse as Masou Gakuen HxH then don’t fret any longer and go watch Citrus for girls who will amaze you in a multitude of ways.

2. Complicated relationships

From questionable siblings to relationships that are one sided, both Masou Gakuen HxH and Citrus have a ton of rather complicated relationships. Yuzu and Mei—for example—are Citrus’ main female leads and their sibling status is constantly thrown into question when love seems to appear between them. Then you add Matsuri and Himeko Momokino—Mei’s childhood friend—and love triangles appear all over in Citrus. Masou Gakuen HxH is a harem so that explains why things become a bit complicated when you have several girls who begin to fall hard for Hida. While complicated relationships can sometimes be deal breakers for anime, it ironically makes both Citrus and Masou Gakuen HxH enjoyable. Each week you want to see what will happen between the various characters of both anime and that is a good thing ultimately. Though we seriously want Yuzu and Mei to just shack up already, the back and forth is killing us…

3. Mostly all about the ladies

While Masou Gakuen HxH might have a male lead, you’ll notice that really the show is more focused on the girls who fight and get fondled by Hida to “power up”. Oddly enough, Citrus also lacks a male presence with only several men appearing in the forms of Mei’s father and Yuzu’s step father Sho Aihara, Mei’s grandfather—who doesn’t even have a name mentioned—and Mei’s first “relationship” Amamiya. Citrus and Masou Gakuen HxH truly want viewers to focus less on men and mostly on women. Though we won’t complain about that here at Honey’s Anime. The ladies of Citrus and Masou Gakuen HxH usually have our undivided attention most of the time.

Final Thoughts

Masou Gakuen HxH was quite an ecchi show when it released a few years back but for many of us, that was all it needed to be. With action, drama, ecchi and various other themes, Masou Gakuen HxH just hit all the notes needed to be a fun anime that was far from perfect but still enjoyable nonetheless. Similarly, the shows above mirror this concept as they all have issues here and there but deliver what an anime fan might want over complicated stories and overly cliché romances, they deliver in ecchi. That’s why if you enjoyed Masou Gakuen HxH, we think you’ll like both Citrus and Killing Bites. Have you seen any of the shows on this list or is one show really intriguing you now?
