Synopsis

MEGALOBOX is a style of ultimate fighting where human boxers combine their strength with gears and technology.

The Megalonia tournament will decide the best fighter in the world, but there is one boxer that takes on the challenge of fighting without any gear at all. They call him “Gearless Joe”.

Joe is a legendary champion who in just three months went from the lowest-ranked underground ring in the Megalonia tournament to a miraculous win that made him a champion—capturing the hearts and dreams of countless people.

Seven years later, Gearless Joe again heads into the underground ring. His badly-wounded body now fitted with gears, he has changed his name to “Nomad”...

MEGALOBOX is based on the series Tomorrow's Joe, which was a landmark youth manga series in Japan. It tells the life story of its protagonist Joe Yabuki, who risks everything for boxing. It ran in Weekly Shonen Magazine (Kodansha) from 1968 to 1973, moving readers so deeply that its popularity endures to this day. The television anime series MEGALOBOX was first released in April 2018, marking the 50th anniversary of the original series’ inception. MEGALOBOX takes place in the near future, and is an intense drama about the people involved in this fierce sport.

Joe / Nomad: Yoshimasa Hosoya

Seven years ago, he fought in the Megalonia tournament without a gear in his body and emerged victorious to become the legendary boxer “Gearless Joe.” However, he fights under a different name these days as he travels the underground boxing circuit: Nomad.

Gansaku Nambu: Shiro Saitou

A renowned trainer who founded “Team Bangaichi” with Sachio and led “Gearless Joe” from the bottom rung of underground boxing to the highest echelons in only three months.

Sachio: Michiyo Murase

Sachio grew up with other children on the streets of the Forbidden District but found purpose in life as the chief mechanic on Team Bangaichi.

Yuri: Hiroki Yasumoto

Yuri was once a Megaloboxer dubbed the “King of Kings” and Gearless Joe’s archrival. Now retired, he trains the champion boxer Liu.

Mac: Atsushi Miyauchi

Mac never had much success as a Megaloboxer. He worked as a police officer to help his family pay the bills but suffered a life-threatening injury in the line of duty. Then, thanks to Sakuma and cutting edge technology, he made a miraculous recovery and returned to the ring as a Megaloboxer once again.

Sakuma: Chikahiro Kobayashi

Sakuma is a young, extremely talented entrepreneur who revolutionized medical technology within the field of neuroengineering.

Yukiko Shirato: Nanako Mori

Once the CEO of Shirato Konzern, the company that organized the tournament to determine the true king of Megaloboxing, she is now Sakuma’s business partner. Mikio Shirato is her older brother.

Mikio Shirato: Tatsuhisa Suzuki

He fought Joe using a set of “Ace” AI-powered gear of his own design, but walked away from Megaloboxing after being defeated. Since then, he has been teaching at a university as a scientist while continuing his own research.

Aragaki: Makoto Tamura

Aragaki is a former Megaloboxer who trained under Nambu. After losing his legs in a war, his bout with Joe forced him to come to grips with his past. Now, he is a coach who specializes in training veterans like himself to succeed as Megaloboxers.

Chief: Mio Tanaka

Chief is an underground Megaloboxer who lives with a community of immigrants known as the Casa. Warmed-hearted, he is a natural leader for them.

Marla: Farahnaz Nikray

Marla is a tough woman who not only runs a maintenance facility within the Casa, but also looks after Mio as a single mother. Whatever Chief needs, be it gear maintenance or assisting in his daily life, Marla is there to deliver.

Mio: Yumi Hino

Marla’s only son. He falls in with the wrong crowd and even steals Joe’s motorcycle.

Liu: Katsuya Fukunishi

Yuri’s tutelage has drawn out Liu’s tremendous potential. Undefeated since his debut, he is now the Megaloboxing champion.
