It's safe to say there are quite a few people in Japan (and the rest of the world!) that are hyped for the two-part Sailor Moon Eternal films set to release in January of February of next year. Sailor Moon has never lost its global popularity since it first aired in the 1990s, with fans that have been loyal for coming up on thirty years alongside fans that have only just recently discovered and fallen in love with the series due to its newest content. That makes for a lot of Sailor Moon fans - the perfect market for a collaboration cafe!

Of course, Sailor Moon is not new to collaborations in Japan. With entire fashion lies, cosmetics, snacks, and more coming out regularly, there’s always something Sailor Moon-themed for fans to grab. But an entire sit-down cafe? That doesn’t happen every day! But that’s exactly what just started in Tokyo, where the Sailor Moon Eternal Cafe pop-up has just opened to hype everyone up for the new films of the same name! And this cafe is only just starting in Tokyo; throughout early 2021, it's going to have a few locations across Japan. Let’s check out what you can expect if you’re lucky enough to visit, or take a vicarious trip there from the comfort of your sofa!

The Experience

Header-700x282 [Otaku Pop-Up Hot Spot] Sailor Moon Eternal Cafe

All of the food and drinks at the Sailor Moon Eternal cafe have been painstakingly designed to not only have a design done in the image of the character they are meant to represent, but also to reflect each character’s actual taste in food. Not very many concept cafes are able to capture the characters in their dishes as accurately as this! Each dish is done in the colour scheme of whatever character its modelled after, and there are quite a few different choices. Deciding based on your favourite character, or your favourite kind of food, is going to be the hardest part for most fans!

Let’s have a look at just a few of the dishes, starting with some savoury ones. There is a beautiful sashimi on rice dish all done in red colours to represent Rei, seafood pilaf with gold power complete with Tuxedo Mask’s mask silhouette on the plate, and a warm vegetable stew that is what the chef imagines the girls would make for dinner to share with their friends. If you have a sweet tooth, most of the desserts are big enough to be a meal themselves. There’s Ami’s sparkling parfait, which is made with jelly and sea salt ice cream, a black sesame donut that looks like Luna, mille crepe cake modelled after Sailor Moon’s broach, and a tiny cupcake that looks like a pegasus to make you feel like Chibiusa if you order it.

It wouldn’t be a theme cafe without some drinks, too! There are a few beautiful hot herbal teas with small desserts on the side to make you feel like a princess, fruity sodas themed after most of the leading ladies, a Tuxedo Mask-inspired cafe latte complete with a bite of chocolate on the side, and a magical drink that changes colour when you mix the soda-flavoured syrup into the main drink. If you don’t have time to spend a proper session at the cafe, there is also a soda drink to go that “tastes like love,” and comes in a special tumbler that is yours to keep. If you want to shop in the store without visiting the cafe, you have to buy this drink!

Additional info

As with most themed cafes in Japan, there’s also an attached shop selling exclusive Sailor Moon Eternal merchandise. What really makes this merchandise special and sets it apart from what you can buy elsewhere is that these goods are collaboration goods with LGBTQ fashion icon and up-and-coming designer Wataru Lisa Igarashi. You can buy the usual keychains, stationary sets, and can badges, though all done in a pastel colour scheme of Igarashi’s design. But there’s even more merchandise available beyond these typical items - Igarashi is a fashion designer, after all, so there are exclusive clothing items and accessories! There are even two beautifully designed tea sets, complete with teapots, cups, and saucers. If you’re looking to take something special home from the cafe, or shopping for a Sailor Moon-loving friend, you can’t go wrong with goods this well-designed and unique. Remember if you want to visit the store without eating in the cafe, you have to buy the soda to go in the souvenir tumbler first.

As we mentioned previously, this pop-up at Tokyo Box Cafe&Space is only the first of these Sailor Moon Eternal cafe pop-ups. The other cafes will be located in:

Tokyo Shinjuku Lumine Est: January 1st 2021 to February 28th 2021
Nagoya Box: December 24th 2020 to March 7th 2021
Osaka Abeno Contact: January 7th 2021 to February 21st 2021
Okinawa Box: January 8th 2021 to February 28th 2021
Hokkaido Coach&Four Shinkawadoori Interlude: January 2nd 2021 to March 14th 2021

It’s a great chance for Sailor Moon fans across Japan to get to experience a themed cafe, rather than only people who live in Tokyo and Osaka. If you’re closer to one of these other locations, check the cafe’s official website for opening hours and addresses.

The Sailor Moon Eternal Cafe promises to follow social distancing protocol at all of its locations, so it's highly recommended that you make a reservation on their website in advance to be sure you can get one of the very limited seats! An added incentive for reserving in advance is that if you do, and spend more than \650 (not hard with this great menu), you can a free mask case in a random design. Add that to your free coaster if you ordered a drink and you’re walking away with a couple of extra keepsakes you got for spending money you would already have spent anyway on your meal. It's not a bad deal!
