With a long list of titles under its belt, the isekai genre covers a wide array of concepts. Logically speaking, it’s not surprising to think that we’ve already seen – or at least heard – every twist and turn it can offer. We are pretty much convinced that the genre can’t possibly release anything that can surprise us, but lo and behold, we are wrong. Forget about hunger, thirst, and whatnot. Forget about being a monster, a lowly human, or dealing with a lack of equipment. What Reincarnated as a Sword offers is the idea of becoming a sentient weapon. Surely, it captivated us when it first came out, and we undeniably almost immediately got hooked on it. Now that a spin-off series has come out, we are more than stoked to meet our beloved characters once more.

Here’s what we think about Reincarnated as a Sword: Another Wish Volume 1.

Discussion Time

As you’ll infer from the title, Reincarnated as a Sword is about a person being reincarnated as a sentient weapon. The sword has all of its previous memories, save for its name. Given that it’s just a piece of equipment, it only desires to gain more power and become stronger. However, it can’t do so alone - it requires someone to wield it. The sword finds its first wielder after saving a young girl from slavery. Together, they cut through everything beneficial to the sword while they search for the sword’s purpose in life. Well, that is how it should be, anyway. However, the sword and the student now find themselves in another familiar yet different world.

Why You Should Read Reincarnated as a Sword: Another Wish Vol. 1

1. All of Our Favorite Characters

Fans of the original series will be delighted to see the same set of characters they have fallen in love with. Reincarnated as a Sword: Another Wish features Fran and the whole gang, although they’re a bit different. Other than the mighty sword, Fran, and Jet, the others aren’t acting like themselves. They still look the same, but they somehow forgot about the three’s existence. They behave like it’s their first time meeting our heroes, and they even have different backstories. Even though it sounds confusing, it’s actually the biggest charm of this spin-off series.

2. A Head-Scratching Mystery

As we’ve stated, the mystery of the heroes’ lost identities is the charm of Reincarnated as a Sword: Another Wish. Being separated from each other and sent to a different world, Fran and her master are tasked to collect the shards of the wishing bell they shattered. In order to do so, they must grant the wishes of those who are holding the shards in various parallel universes, starting with the one they are in. Fran and her sword master now have to hop around universes and fulfill various quests if they want to return to their original world.

Why You Should Skip Reincarnated as a Sword: Another Wish Vol. 1

1. It’s a Spin-Off Series

Just like any other spin-off series, it is best to read Reincarnated as a Sword: Another Wish after reading the original series. That is because this spin-off series is set in a new but similar world to that of the original, and the lore is essentially the same. While it is still possible to enjoy the series without prior knowledge, you will be missing out on numerous references and will be confused about the characters and lore. Of course, it also contains spoilers for the original series, so be sure to skip it if you still haven’t read the original and are planning to do so in the future.

Final Thoughts

The original Reincarnated as a Sword series offers an interesting angle on the “transported to a new world” trope, and this spin-off series adds another interesting twist to that. Since it’s a spin-off, be sure to skip it if you haven’t read the original yet - otherwise, come join us as we hold our fake swords and join the heroes’ journey as they try to return to their world.

I am a copywriter, proofreader, and editor. I love watching anime, reading manga, and writing my own stories. Watch out in the future as you may see one of my works one day. Manga and anime were big parts of my childhood. I grew up watching Yu Yu Hakusho, Slam Dunk, One Piece, and Dragon Ball Z. Those were probably one of the happiest and most carefree days of my life. In fact, most of my values are probably molded by manga. No, that's not an exaggeration.
