Not like everyone hasn't heard of Sword Art Online, but if you are new, you can watch this without watching SAO.

That's because this is a spin-off. I hopes for this since it starts with a clean slate. Fingers crossed it does better than season two of Sword Art Online.

!!! We do not mention that which shall not be named! Just focus on this show and what is new, shiny, and cool. I bet FPS gamers will like this too since it's all about shooting other players.

You're right. I will just wait and see. I love pretty much anything isekai and while this is not fully isekai, it's enough for me to enjoy. I hope it gets tactical like No Game No Life.

Synopsis

Llenn is a female player who is fully enjoying her solo play in the gun and steel world of Gun Gale Online.

Llenn loves cute things and has made all of her equipment pink. Due to her steady, consistent playing, she has become skilled. When she realizes how enjoyable it is to hunt other characters–committing player killing (PK)–she becomes completely absorbed in it to the point that she is known as the Pink Devil.

Then one day, Llenn meets the beautiful, mysterious player Pitohui, and they hit it off immediately. After being told by Pitohui, she decides to participate in the team battle event, Squad Jam.

Three Episode Impression

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is about an FPS MMO. It’s oddly nothing like Sword Art Online itself and seems to be only set in the world of SAO as the first episode indicates. Speaking of, the first episode is a battle that Llenn and M participate in. That’s the entire episode. Honestly, it would be best to skip this one, watch episodes two and three, and then come back to make the story more linear. The second episode introduces us to Llenn who has a complex about her height and plays a bunch of different games until she gets a short, cute character. Pitohui meets her after learning about a deadly killer in pink. They become friends. Then in episode three, Pitohui floats the idea that Llenn should participate in a battle royale called Squad Jam. Pitohui fixes her up with M and they train to participate. M is slightly awkward and massively tall. He is really really into guns and teaches Llenn a lot. The third episode ends with them heading into Squad Jam.

Honestly, with SAOA: Gun Gale Online, it’s really only SAO in name which is both good and bad. If you’re an SAO fan, prepare to get disappointed because this is nothing like SAO other than it’s an online game. If you’re not, then good news, you can listen to the characters talk about guns, killing, and fighting. We were worried about this being SAO Season 2 all over again, but it is much better and more interesting. That being said, the art is really poor for an SAO work and there should have been a better investment in the art. If you’re not some massive SAO loyalist or purist, then check this out. You might just like it.
