The Hottest Summer 2020 Anime Streaming on Crunchyroll This Instant!

Okay, so Spring 2020 was a bit of a rough time for anime with a lot of series getting delayed which are only just recently starting back up again, possibly creating a backlog for a lot of watchers so we hope you don’t feel too overwhelmed now with a new season already coming at us now, but for those looking for new series to check out on Crunchyroll this season, today we’ll be introducing just that! Our focus here is on new series but we’ll also be mentioning some notable continuing/returning series as well so let’s get started!

The God of High School

Do you like shounen action series with awesome fights? You should probably check out The God of High School! The latest hot new South Korean webtoon adaptation riding that seemingly endless Korean Wave, The God of High School follows taekwondo expert Jin Mo-Ri as he battles his way through a tournament to determine who is the best high school fighter in the country. While it might not be the most original series ever, it’s so far been an exciting part of this season mainly for its high quality art and animation from MAPPA.

Kanojo, Okarishimasu (Rent-a-Girlfriend)

Changing gears quite a bit, we have Renta-a-Girlfriend which, true to its title, is about a guy who gets dumped by his real girlfriend and ends up hiring a “rental girlfriend” as a replacement and precedes to get caught up in a number of romcom shenanigans with her, and some other girls of course! One thing that sets this show apart is that it’s dealing with college-aged characters instead of the usual high or middle schoolers. Rent-a-Girlfriend also has a bit more depth than you might expect from this premise without being too overdramatic so far. In any case, it’s definitely worth checking out for romcom fans this season and has a solid opening by the peggies which gives some bonus points in our book!

Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha: Shijou Saikyou no Maou no Shiso, Tensei shite Shison-tachi no Gakkou e (The Misfit of Demon King Academy)

Can you believe this series is a light novel adaptation?! Of course you can and if we’re being honest, The Misfit of Demon King Academy is probably not anything particularly special this season but yet another fantasy isekai series with a little bit of a twist in that the main characters are descendants, or a reincarnation of, the titular demon king instead of your usual high schooler/salaryman who becomes a hero and it’s appropriately a just a little bit “edgier” than some of those shows. All that being said, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth watching if you’re into this kind of anime. He’s got a bit of a harem thing going on so if you like demons, cute demon girls, and some decent fights and funny moments like him spinning an entire castle on his finger, this show is a low commitment Crunchyroll recommendation for this season.

Notable Sequels

This season is actually full of a lot of notable sequels and continuing series including delayed shows from last season like A Certain Scientific Railgun T, which has been great so far by the way! The problem with recommending these is that it mostly boils down to if you have seen and liked the previous installments in which case you’re probably watching the sequels already.

However, if you’re thinking about getting caught up on a series with a currently airing sequel, some definite recommendations include the second season of the super-popular psychological fantasy isekai Re:Zero, the somewhat Soul Eater-esque supernatural firefighter action series Enen no Shouboutai (Fire Force), and the long-awaited third season of the beloved romantic school dramedy My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU.

Final Thoughts

Altogether, extenuating circumstances have made this season of anime a bit of an unusual one that’s arguably a bit too dominated by sequels but nevertheless still offers quite a bit of anime to enjoy on Crunchyroll this summer. We hope you enjoyed our picks here and welcome you to let us know your own recommendations by leaving us a comment below and be sure to check out more articles here on Honey’s. Until next time, happy watching! See ya~
