Anime is that wonderful world where you can find all kinds of interesting characters with the most rare and exotic features, such as gravity defying hairstyles or a colorful hair. Today, we’ll take a minute to focus on those very special and cool characters who have heterochromia.
Heterochromia is a difference in the coloration of the eyes. This trait is usually inborn but it may also be caused by certain diseases or injuries. In the world of anime, many other things can make someone’s eyes look different from each other, like satanic contracts for example.
Now, let’s see what’s behind these character’s odd eyes.
10. Tet from No Game No Life
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Apr 2014 – Jun 2014
Tet is the One True God of the world of games, Disboard. As a god and the ruler of such colorful place, it’s not really a surprise he’s got rare features. Although his eyes are more than just heterochromatic and colorful, they are totally psychedelic.
His right eye is green with a yellow diamond in his pupil, while the left one is kind of purple with a little blue and a green spade in the pupil. That certainly fits in the style of the god of play.
9. Neko from K
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Oct 2012 – Dec 2012
This kitty cat is a Strain and a Silver Clansman. Neko is the responsible for altering Yashiro’s and the students of Ashinaka High School’s memories. She’s got colorful mismatching eyes; a blue right one and a green left one, though she doesn’t show any strong signs of a double personality as one might expect.
Neko is a playful and lively girl with a strong appetite. Not surprisingly, she likes fish, probably almost as much as she likes Shiro. She’s also extremely naïve and childish, but very protective of Shiro, especially in the most dangerous situations.
8. Soushi Miketsukami from Inu x Boku SS
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 2012 – Mar 2012
Soushi is a nine tailed spirit fox and the most powerful member of SS. He’s a half-youkai / half-human, which may be the reason for his mismatching eyes. He’s got a blue right eye and a golden left eye. We’re not sure if this difference in the colors of his eyes means anything at all or if it’s just to make him look hot.
If that was the idea, then the designers did a damn good job. Soushi looks sexy as hell with those flashy eyes and his black suit. His look definitely goes well with his role as the sensitive man.
7. Kurumi Tokisaki from Date a Live
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Apr 2013 – Jun 2013
Kurumi is one scary goth loli. She’s the most brutal and dangerous spirit out there. Her right eye is dark red, while her left eye is golden with a clock in it. This clock in her left eye represents her “time”, that is the power she’s using.
Her heterochromia, as in most characters with this feature, seems to reflect her bipolarity. Kurumi is a vicious and merciless spirit who’s killed thousands of people. However, she can easily appear as an innocent and polite high school girl. Plus, she does have a soft spot for small animals. So, who knows? Maybe there’s more to her than meets the eye.
6. Seijuro Akashi from Kuroko no Basket (3rd season)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Jan 2015 – Jun 2015
Akashi is the most fearsome member of the “generation of miracles” inside the court. He’s the captain of Rakuzan and former captain of the legendary Teiko basketball team. He grew up with a strong winner-mentality, so when the other members of the generation of miracles threatened to shadow him, he developed a vicious personality which made him unstoppable.
This bipolar nature is reflected in his eyes, his left one being a tone lighter and shinier than his right one. His odd left eye is also the source of his most powerful skill, the “Emperor Eye”, which allows him to predict his opponents’ moves.
5. Kaneki Ken from Tokyo Ghoul
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jul 2014 – Sep 2014
Kaneki’s heterochromia was caused by a tiny little incident that transformed him into a crazy flesh-eating monster. He’s now half-human/half-ghoul, and whenever his ghoul side is active, his left eye turns into that of a ghoul.
This is why he’s known as “gantai” (eye patch), because he has to cover the ghoul eye during the day. As a ghoul however, he wears his mask the other way round, covering his human eye, which makes him look freaking cool. But looks aside, this difference in his eyes represents the dichotomy inside him; two opposites coexisting in one person.
4. Ciel Phantomhive from Kuroshitsuji / Black Butler
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Oct 2008 – Mar 2009
Ciel Phantomhive is the head of the Phantomhive House. He’s a rich and arrogant kid whose main interest is having revenge on those who have betrayed his family. He was tortured and abused as a child by some perverse cultists, a situation that led him to make a contract with Sebastian, a demon.
As a result of this contract, Ciel now has a mark on his right eye. The mark of the Faustian contract is of a strong and shiny purple color, contrasting with his left eye, which is blue. For obvious reasons he has to hide his beautiful right eye under an eye patch. What a shame.
3. Kakashi Hatake from Naruto
- Episodes: 220
- Aired: Oct 2002 – Feb 2007
Since we’re talking about gantais, we can’t leave Kakashi out. He’s a shinobi of Konohagakure's Hatake clan and one of its most talented ninjas. His left eye was injured during the Third Shinobi World War, which is why he now has heterochromatic eyes.
His left eye was replaced by a sharingan, which he covers under his mask while he doesn’t need to use it. Thus, his new left eye is of a strong red color, contrasting the boring black color of his right eye. The sharingan grants Kakashi great powers, as well as a touch of personality and looks.
2. Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch / Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Oct 2006 – Jul 2007
The Black Prince was born with intense violet eyes just like his father’s. However, he was endowed with the Geass, the power of kings, which he obtained from C.C. As if his strong and captivating violet eyes were not colorful enough, the Geass made his left eye turn a shade of magenta with the glowing bird-shape symbol.
The difference in the color of Lelouch’s eyes portrays his double-sided nature. He can act as a sociable and charming aristocrat student, when in fact he’s a deceiving and manipulative leader.
1. Misaki Mei from Another
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 2012 – Mar 2012
At the top of our list we have yet another gantai, the lovely and somewhat creepy Misaki Mei. She has a reddish brown right eye and a green left eye. This green eye is actually made of glass. She lost her left eye to a disease when she was four, so her adoptive mother gave her a glass eye to replace it.
Misaki’s adoptive mother thought matching eyes would be boring, and we couldn’t agree more. She looks lovely with those colorful eyes; though she chooses to hide her fake one under an eye patch most of the time. We’re not sure what upsets her more about that eye, the difference in color or what she can see with it.
This is it for our list of Top 10 characters with heterochromia / odd eyes. As I said, there are many causes for eyes of different colors in anime characters, from contact lenses and eye replacements to organ transplants and magical contracts. We don’t question the authenticity of the heterochromatic condition, instead we marvel at the flashy beauty of these characters’ mismatching eyes.
Some other anime characters with this trait are Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop) -he has a fake right eye which is a tone lighter than his left one-, Asuna (Negima), Kanzaki (Great Teacher Onizuka) and the twins Suiseiseki and Souseiseki (Rozen Maiden). I challenge you to tell me which other anime characters with heterochromia you know!
