In anime, the ones who take all the spotlight when it comes to the siblings cliché are the older brothers and the younger sisters. It’s always all about the onii-chans, the imoutos, and their dubious familial relations that almost always seem to look like an incestuous one rather than a normal one. And in some cases, it actually ends up being the case. After all, incest is wincest. But we must not forget about the older sisters in the equation of anime.
While often side tracked, older sisters provide a very important factor to the dynamics of an anime. They aren’t often good older sisters, but when they are, they play a very important part in the development of the main character or the little sibling that they look after. This is especially true when the mother figure of the family is dead or non-existent due to some work related issue. Without the older sister there to act as the woman in his or her life, the main character is more than likely to end up like a real prick without the motherly love provided by their older sister.
So here at Honey’s, join us as we celebrate the Top 10 Anime Older Sisters!

10. Akari Kawamoto (3-gatsu no Lion)
- Episodes: 23
- Aired: Oct 2016 - ?
Rei Kiriyama is a 17 year old boy who has come into his financial maturity and is living alone, completely financed by his salary as a professional Shogi player. Despite that fact, he has yet to grow up and remains a child in terms of maturity. Because of this, Rei has difficulties interacting with people in general and his relationship with his family has become strained as well. Furthermore, the mounting pressures of being one of the youngest professional Shogi players has gotten to him and his ability to function as a player has decreased drastically.
Fortunately, he is often the guest of the Kawamoto household, wherein lies a group of sisters that he is friends with; Akari, Hinata, and Momo. It is not a stretch to say that much of his emotional and character development occur as a result of his interactions with them. Because his relationship to his actual family is so strained, he needs another family to pick up the slack. Akari, though not his real older sister, sets a real example for him in terms of emotional maturity. Due to their mother having passed away, she takes care of the two younger sisters and works day through night to provide for them. What’s one more child in the mix?
9. Serafall Leviathan (Highschool DxD)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 2012 – Mar 2012
Serafall Leviathan is one of the four Satans who have taken leadership of the Underworld following the rebellion of the new devils. This makes her one of the most powerful characters that belong to the devil faction. Coincidentally, she is also the older sister of Sona Sitri, the student president of the school that the many characters of the series attend. While she acts like a child most of the time by pretending to be a mahou shoujo, she is in fact one of the best older sisters around.
In many instances, whenever Sona faces great danger, she refuses to tell her older sister because she knows just how much Serafall cares for her. In the Excalibur Arc, Sona did not want to summon her older sister to her side despite the dire danger because she fears that Serafall will overreact so much to the danger that her Imouto is in by exerting all her power against the enemy and sinking Japan in the process. Because as long as Sona is safe, nothing else matters.
8. Haruka Minami (Minami-ke)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Oct 2007 – Dec 2007
Like many situations where the mother is present, Haruka has to take up the slack as the mother figure due to her role as the older sister. She dearly loves her younger sisters Kana and Chiaki, and goes to great lengths to take care of them, much to her own detriment. Many of her actions are driven by her need to make sure they are well taken care off, as opposed to her own well-being.
Despite being an intelligent girl, Haruka attends a neighbourhood school simply because it is near their house and it allows her to be home faster for her sisters. Haruka is often seen to be doing household chores like cooking, cleaning, and shopping, allowing her younger sisters to have more carefree lives. Unlike many others, Haruka does not enjoy her youth like most do as she does not attend any clubs nor have a boyfriend, and chooses to spend all her time with her sisters. Though she is saddened by the lack of activity in her life, she doesn’t regret it at all, because she loves her younger sisters.
7. Ruri Gokou aka Kuroneko (Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct 2010 – Dec 2010
In the Ore no Imouto series, Kyousuke is often given the limelight as the best older sibling ever. This isn’t without cause, as anyone who can withstand the amount of nonsense they would get from Kirino deserves an award. However, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t any other awesome older siblings in the series. Kuroneko is a high level Otaku who befriends Kirino and Kyousuke, even ends up dating the latter.
Despite her interests, Kuroneko does not spend all her time watching anime and goes to conventions, but spends much of it taking care of her sisters instead. Due to their financial situation, her parents are often away for work so it falls to her to do many of the household chores and care for the family. However, Kuroneko doesn’t seem to be resentful of the fact and is shown to have a high level of affection for her younger siblings. That’s what older sisters are about after all.

The lengths Ishizu goes to save him are unthinkable, as most would give up after the first decade. She even sacrifices her moral fibre by luring in innocents like Yugi and Kaiba in order to force them to defeat Marik and save him from his alter ego. Battle after battle, Ishizu fights against Yami Marik and eventually Yugi is able to defeat him and release him from his bondage. 5. Chifuyu Orimura (IS: Infinite Stratos)
- Episodes: 12

Before the events of the series, Chifuyu was the Japan Representative and spent most of her time battling the outside forces that threatened the country. She was well known for her sword technique and is admired to be a general bad ass. Thus, Chifuyu already falls in the cool older sister cliché.
Despite her past accomplishments, Chifuyu spends a lot of time caring for her younger brother. Most of the time in the series, whenever he faces danger, she is seen to act like she doesn’t care but in reality is extremely worried as seen when Chifuyu added salt to her coffee when Ichika faced off against the unmanned drone. Chifuyu is close to Ichika to the point that many have suggested that the two are more like a married couple than siblings, but the truth is; she just cares for him a lot.

However, it is later uncovered that Bianchi actually cares for her younger brother a lot and is hurt every time he acts like she is the plague.
In the future arc, she does her best to train Gokudera to use the weapons that his future self-used, and while she does taunt him about his illegitimacy in their family, Bianchi only does so because she has full understanding of her brother and knows that it would bring out his full potential, thereby ensuring his survival. Future Bianchi later retrieves the love letters between Gokudera’s mother and father, giving him closure to the matter and showing him that he has a family that cares, and Gokudera simply needed to open his eyes to the fact.
3. Temari (Naruto)
- Episodes: 220
- Aired: Oct 2002 – Feb 2007
Temari is the oldest of the Suna Siblings, the younger being Kankuro and Gaara. Throughout most of her life, she was raised to believe that Gaara is a demon reborn and misfortune is all that lies with associating with him in anyway. Despite that, Temari doesn’t stay away from him even though she obviously fears his killing ability and general lack of restraint.
After Gaara mellowed out following the battle with Naruto, Temari was the first to accept his change and was essential to his growing as a person following his change. When Gaara was captured, she showed great worry and rushed back to Sunagakure despite it being inadvisable to run through a bloody desert. Overall, Temari shows great concern for her family and does her best to take up the role of the eldest, despite how difficult it is.
2. Olivier Mira Armstrong (FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
- Episodes: 64
- Aired: Apr 2009 – Jun 2010
Olivier is the older of the Armstrong siblings, and is the heir to the family as a result. She is also the stronger sibling of the two, and spends much of her time demeaning her younger brother Alex because of this. Olivier is shown to be very upright and strict, giving no quarter to those under her command and pushing them to excel.
Throughout the series, she shows great disdain to Alex for his weakness and denounces him in public, and even goes so far as to tear up a letter from him in public. So why exactly is Olivier a good sister? It is shown in the later parts of the show that she actually cares for her brother a great deal and actually has a great amount of faith in his abilities, and the Armstrong siblings finally battle side by side to take down the abominations spewed forth by Father.
1. Mikasa Ackerman (Shingeki no Kyojin)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Apr 2013 – Sep 2013
Mikasa is the adopted older sister of the main character, Eren Yeager. However, it wasn’t Mikasa that adopted Eren but Eren who adopted Mikasa. They were already childhood friends, but after the death of her parents at the hands of human traffickers, she is officially adopted by Eren’s family and lived with them until the fall of Wall Maria.
Mikasa is generally stoic and calm throughout the series, however the one thing that can get her to completely lose her cool is Eren. Whenever he is in danger, she panics a lot and tries her best to get to his location in order to destroy whatever is threatening him. It is shown that she greatly loves Eren, and desires to live a peaceful life with him. She even goes so far as to join the military just to protect him, following him expressing his desire to kill all the titans. And with a girl like Mikasa protecting him, Eren is most definitely safe from the titans, and not because he can morph into one.
Conclusion
Despite being overshadowed by other types of siblings, older sisters definitely have their part to play in the anime industry and their loving and caring nature overall will always be important to nurture the character of the main character. In an industry where it always seems like the parents of the family seem to be dead or overseas, it almost always falls to them to care for the younger kids. And care they have!
