Top 10 Anime Sisters

Today, we'll be taking a look at some of the best sisters anime has to offer. Whether these characters take extra care of their younger siblings, bicker to no end, or try to rip each other's faces off every time they meet, these sisters in particular are ones that left a lasting impression on the anime community. This is an updated list so be sure to check out the original entries below!

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

10. Fuyumi Todoroki from Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)

The older sister to Shoto and Natsuo, Fuyumi is the peacekeeper and mediator of the Todoroki household. After Endeavor begins making more of an effort to reconnect with his family, Fuyumi is the first to welcome this change of heart, encouraging her siblings to, at the very least, give their father a chance to redeem himself. Shoto eventually begins visiting his mother more frequently and ultimately undergoes an internship with his father. Natsuo, on the other hand, is still incredibly angry over his father's abusive past and cannot look past it so easily.

Fuyumi always tries her best to create a stable environment for her siblings. When Shoto brings Bakugo and Deku over for dinner, she is the first to engage in small-talk so as not to make her guests feel uneasy. Even after Natsuo eventually storms out, she maintains her composure for her family's sake. Fuyumi is a lesser-known character in the My Hero Academia Universe but one that deserves just as much recognition as her superhero father for her heroic actions taken at home.

9. Haruno Yukinoshita from Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU)

It seems the siblings of the Oregairu Universe always have completely different personalities from their respective brothers and sisters. Komachi, for example, is energetic, popular, and constantly smiling. Hikigaya, on the other hand, is jaded, irritable, and always scowling. Similarly, while Yukino is cold, reserved, and strict, Haruno is carefree, playful, and affectionate. Yukino always struggles to express herself, especially when it comes to understanding her feelings towards Hikigaya. Haruno, on the other hand, often teases Yukino by openly messing with Hikigaya to try and embarrass him.

Despite this, Haruno cares deeply for her sister and is not afraid to express to Hikigaya where he is going wrong. She tells him outright that his love triangle is less "high school sitcom" and more clinically codependent. Siblings will always bicker but it is the family bond that keeps those ties from being severed entirely during a disagreement. Haruno and Yukino are great examples of sisters who don't necessarily share a lot of the same interests but can still be there for each other in times of trouble.

8. Kohaku from Dr. Stone

After the world's population is turned to stone and the world descends into the chaotic jungle it once was, a generation of humans who know nothing of our world is born from its ashes. One such girl is Kohaku, who befriends a remnant of the world of yesteryear in Senku after being rescued by his scientific prowess. Kohaku is much like the rest of these stone-age people. She is fascinated by every word and creation that comes from Senku, while typically resorting to violence in hopes of solving most of her problems. Completely dissimilar Kohaku is to her ailing older sister Ruri.

We discover that the reason Kohaku found herself blocking Senku's path is that she was performing her daily ritual of preparing supplies to aid in her sister's recovery. Kohaku is extremely loyal to not only her sister but her people as well. She understands that Senku will be met with hesitation but shoulders that disdain because she knows what is best. Furthermore, in a team consisting of several meek scientists, an elderly pensioner, and a girl with a watermelon on her head, Kohaku provides the much-needed muscle to such a seemingly sickly team!

7. Kyou Fujibayashi from Clannad

Kyou and her sister Ryou both play a vital role in the first season of Clannad. At this time, we as an audience are still left in the dark as to who he will choose from his harem of love interests. One such candidate is Kyou, the feisty, abrasive older sister to the timid and passive Ryou. Kyou is caring and supporting mixed with a little tsundere. She is just as likely to fly into a fit of rage at someone picking on her sister as she is at Tomoya for complimenting her. As the season progresses, Kyou and Ryou realize they stand no chance compared to Nagisa and it's very emotional watching the two break down into tears as they both are forced to come to terms with their respective rejections.

Luckily, in an OVA of Clannad, we get to see a world in which Kyou and Ryou take center stage. Ryou initially confesses to Tomoya and the pair begin dating. However, Kyou can no longer contain her feelings and the narrative descends into juicy teenage drama. Eventually, through a lot of heartache and guilt, Ryou encourages her sister to be with Tomoya as she thinks they are a better match. This OVA really cemented Kyou as a great older sister, willing to contain her own emotions to protect her sibling's happiness. Thankfully, Ryou is just as thoughtful and Kyou comes out with Tomoya in the end!

6. Ryuko Matoi from Kill la Kill

For those that dropped Kill la Kill, you may be surprised to learn that the secret twist ending reveals Ryuko and Satsuki to have been sisters all along! It's strange, considering most of the entries so far have been primarily selected due to an intense family bond, yet Ryuko and Satsuki try to kill each other every time they meet! Ryuko is, at first, averse to the terrible school life of both her and her friend and attempts to topple the authoritarian reign of the student council's Elite Four. However, once Satsuki arrives on the scene and dominates Ryuko in battle, Ryuko adds "taking down Satsuki" to her to-do list as well.

After the true villain of the series reveals herself as Satsuki and Ryuko's mother, the sisters team up to try and take down the larger threat. While we've mainly focused on loving pairings of siblings so far, Ryuko and Satsuki are proof that sisters who throw down together, stay together. Watching Ryuko grow stronger as she tries her best to catch up to Satsuki's level, is very indicative of the typical younger sister's aspiration to be like their onee-san. As the season climaxes, it is nice to see Satsuki acknowledge Ryuko as a family member when we as viewers know the troubled journey that brought her to Satsuki's side.

5. Satsuki from Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)

Satsuki and Mei are a classic pair of siblings who manage to breathe wonder into their arguably stale countryside existence. After an encounter with several mystical creatures, Satsuki and Mei return to their quaint life alongside their father. The girls' mother, we soon learn, is ill and recovering in hospital. It's unknown whether Totoro and pals are real throughout the story and, perhaps, they represent nothing more than a childish wish to hold on to their youth in the midst of such a mature and difficult situation concerning their mother.

After Mei leaves in search of her mother, attempting to deliver a bushel of corn to her in the hospital, Satsuki drops everything to give chase in search of her sister. Luckily, Mei is soon found and the girls enjoy a quiet evening with their mother in the hospital. Satsuki and Mei argue throughout the film but, as the older sister, Satsuki recognizes her responsibility in caring for Mei during her mother's absence. As such, as much as Mei may irritate her on occasion, she will always rush to her rescue and console her in times of trouble.

4. Maki Zenin from Jujutsu Kaisen

Maki is the strong and confident senpai to our trio of new Jujutsu sorcerer recruits. Alongside Toge Inumaki and Panda, she trains to better herself while helping out those in need of guidance. Maki is very strong-willed, having left home at an early age due to the scorn she received for not possessing any cursed energy. Often underestimated because of this, Maki works twice as hard to ensure she is not a burden during battle. During her fight with Kasumi, for example, Maki easily dispatches her only using her assortment of weapons and combat techniques.

That brings us to Mai, Maki's twin sister. Mai often looks down on Maki due to the resentment she still feels towards her. Maki abandoned her home and Mai never got over this (Mai not being strong enough to leave of her own accord). In complete contrast to the stern but fair Maki, Mai is crude and insulting; caring very little about what other people think. She teases Kugisaki and Megumi about the death of Itadori and constantly belittles her sister for being weak. Yet, Maki stands firm in spite of these insults and almost always comes out on top. She does not hate her sister and understands the feelings of hatred she holds. She is truly a great big sister to not only Mai but the other sorcerers as well!

3. Itsuki from 5-toubun no Hanayome (The Quintessential Quintuplets

Itsuki is one of five sisters all on the verge of failing out of school. Luckily, thanks to their new private tutor, things may be looking up both in terms of grades and romance as well. Itsuki is the first of the quintuplets we meet and she definitely leaves a lasting impression. She is, at first, kind-hearted and playful until Uesugi insults her. From then onwards, it takes a long time for the jovial side of Itsuki to resurface again. However, as Uesugi works his magic, Itsuki eventually admits that she may have been a bit too hasty in dismissing this man so callously. Uesugi proves time and again his willingness to help the sisters pass their exams and Itsuki slowly realizes this. Recognizing the effort he takes to help them all graduate cannot be overlooked.

This level of maturity is incredible, especially for Itsuki who is the youngest quintuplet. This may not seem so important but, as seen in the show, first-born Ichika has adopted a big sister mentality so it wouldn't be too surprising to see the youngest sister be the most unsure of herself. Yet, Itsuki is always the voice of reason and the one sister Uesugi can confide in the most.

2. Rem from Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-)

When we're first introduced to Rem, she is nothing more than one of two strange twins each with vibrantly colored hair, who work as maids at Roswaal Manor. However, as the story progresses, Rem will grow into such a beloved character that she alone will incite wars between her fans and Emilia-enjoyers. Rem is hesitant to trust Subaru at first, killing him in several past lives of his. Yet, the two eventually warm to one another and Rem begins to develop feelings for Subaru.

This all comes to a head when Subaru is eventually captured by Petelegeuse and Rem rushes in to save him. Staking her life on this siege, she enters her demon mode only to be tortured and eventually killed. But, with her dying breath, she frees Subaru from captivity and confesses her love for him. All of these selfless acts cemented Rem as a caring and compassionate person—very unlike her pink-haired sister, Ram (at least in season one). Rem's love extends past her family ties, encompassing those around her with relief that they are (usually) safe within her care.

1. Nezuko Kamado from Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)

When it comes to sisters in anime, none have made more of a lasting impression in recent memory than everyone's favorite box-bound demon, Nezuko. After Tanjiro's family meets their end at the hands of a mysterious demon, he is shocked to learn that his sister is the sole survivor. However, she has since been transformed into a demon and ruthlessly hunts Tanjiro attempting to feast on him. Eventually, Nezuko comes to her senses and resists the temptation to make a meal of her brother, instead agreeing to suppress her urges in hopes that Tanjiro may one day find a cure and return her to her human form.

Nezuko, despite having virtually no speaking lines, has won fans the world over with her adorable grunts and cute personality. She may be forced to rest atop Tanjiro's back during the daylight but she is by no means a burden. She can throw down with the best of them! At the end of the day, Demon Slayer is a tale of sibling love. The unconditional familial bond that pushes Tanjiro forward is also replicated in Nezuko's actions. Some of the best fights in the series are where Tanjiro and Nezuko work together to take down an enemy, highlighting the lengths they will each go to for the other. Regarding Rui in particular, Tanjiro would never have been able to survive as long as he did without Nezuko's Demon Arts support.

Having a sibling can have its pros and cons. The good side of having a sibling is growing up together in a similar environment. Further, your sibling may be your best confidant and you will never be lonely. Obviously, many of the things that you own will have to be shared with your sibling, and will often lead to conflicts and this could be a negative effect of having a sibling.

As you will notice from our lists, not every sister will end up being the perfect sister of choice. There will be flaws in some of the choices but these flaws eventually turn out to be the endearing points in each of them.

Be it annoying or even exasperating at times, these characters grow onto you just as how you would adapt to your own sisters in the 3D world - the true meaning of siblinghood.

From spoilt, annoying sisters that practically annoy you to death to the otaku sister that has a deep interest in the anime world to the quiet and shy chuunibyou sister and to even the most dedicated and devoted sisters of all, we compiled this list of 10 memorable sisters in anime that are simply unforgettable!

10. Minami Kana from Minami-ke

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Oct 2007 to Dec 2007

Kana is the middle sister of the Minami household. Even though she is the middle of the three, she acts like the youngest. In comparison to her reliable older sister and intelligent younger sister, Kana is just... well... spoilt.

Loud and lazy, she does as little as possible around the house well. What makes her such a great pick though? Her energy.

Kana's enthusiastic attitude and unique ideas often makes the house more lively. While the anime promotes itself as an average slice of life anime, it’s Kana that makes the anime enjoyable, and life in general becomes more exciting. You can't get a better companion than her.

9. Takanashi Nazuna from Working!!

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Apr 2010 to Jun 2010

Having a good head on her shoulders, Nazuna is part of the Takanashi household of 5 siblings. She is often Souta's go to person when he needs support. Despite being the youngest, she acts very mature for her age, such that Souta with his infatuation with little things even exclaimed that she was growing up too fast.

Within the Takanashi family, the two of them are shown to be closer to each other than the rest as well. In addition to being matured for her age, Nazuna is shown to be extremely dependable and capable, such that even her elder brother relies on her sometimes. Nazuna is more than you can ask for in a younger sister.

8. Doma Umaru from Himouto! Umaru-chan

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul 2015 to Sep 2015

Refined, well mannered and pretty on the outside, lazy otaku at home. Umaru was the most popular sister last year with her two different personas. Umaru is a bona fide otaku much to the chagrin of her older brother, Taihei.

Unfortunately for Taihei since he is not an otaku, he has problems adapting to her tendencies. Otherwise, Umaru is the perfect sister to chill, relax and watch anime together. We all would love a sister that shares our hobbies as well!

7. Hasegawa Kobato from Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct 2011 to Dec 2011

The adorable and kawaii Kobato is the sister of Kodaka Hasegawa. She dons a gothic lolita outfit due to the fact that she is a big fan of an anime series to the point of quoting the anime most of the time to describe her emotions and feelings. When flustered, she reverts back to the shy 13 year old that she is, which adds a ton of points to her moe factor.

Kobato also has a strong brother complex and is extremely close to her brother. She refuses to let any other females touch him and sees them as a threat, competing with them for his affection. She is the perfect imouto to have - being in the otaku lifestyle and vulnerable at the same time, such that you simply want to give it your all in order to protect her!

6. Kousaka Kirino from Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct 2010 to Dec 2010

Kirino has to hide her otaku lifestyle from her family due to the strict upbringing of her parents. Her passion for the hobby is so fervent that when her brother Kyousuke found her secret stash of anime items, she ropes him into the world of anime and reestablished their broken relationship of a few years.

Similarly to Umaru, Kirino is an avid otaku. She shares her items with you and encourages the hobby. It's comforting to know that someone shares the same hobby as you especially since it's one of your own family members.

5. Araragi Karen from Nisemonogatari

  • Episodes: 11
  • Aired: Jan 2012 to Mar 2012

Karen is the more boisterous and loud sibling between the Araragi sisters. She is highly energetic and active with a burning passion of justice. To maintain her values, she takes up different forms of martial arts as well as excelling in sports as well.

Often dressed in a yellow jumpsuit over a black tank top, her choice of dressing often masks her physical feminine traits, and she was shown to be particularly attractive even to her own brother.

Being tomboyish in general, it is apparent that it is much easier for her brother to communicate with her, and they often indulge in different topics of conversations, sharing a much more questionable and deeper relationship than that of sibling love.

4. Shiro from No Game No Life

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr 2014 to Jun 2014

Alongside her brother, Sora, the both of them form a formidable gaming team known only as Blank. Both share exceptional intelligence but Shiro is usually the more composed and analytical of the two. She has a strong brother complex and the both of them are codependent on each other. When separated, both will suffer a mental breakdown unless they are reunited.

While technically being step siblings, both of them share an intense bond, leading not an individual life but a collective life which is dependent based on the decisions made by the both of them. The relationship between these 2 is the height of sibling relations (maybe a little intense and exaggerated) whereby the both of them are in a reciprocal relationship, caring equally for each other.

3. Onodera Haru from Nisekoi:

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Apr 2015 to Jun 2015

We sometime forget the roles that a supporting character play. More often than not, we are more focused on the main characters and how the story develops from there such that we fail to notice the side stories.

In this example, we would like to highlight the scenario of one particular side character. Haru may be an underwhelming choice for Raku for obvious reasons. But if we disregard the main story line, most of the actions of the earlier part of the anime revolves around how Haru tries her best to dissuade her older sister, Kosaki from being friendly with Raku.

Due to a misunderstanding, Haru mistook Raku for a malevolent individual who is seeking to corrupt the purity of her sister. She took matters into her own hands and often comes in between them for the purpose of separating them further.
Usually, it is the role of the older sibling to care for the younger sibling. In this rare example (and another further down the list), the roles are reversed and we are able to see that Haru deeply cares for her sister just as much as Kosaki cares for Haru as well. This just shows just how close of a relationship that the both of them share.

2. Shiba Miyuki from Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: Apr 2014 to Sep 2014

With an undying devotion to her brother, and the beauty to match the level of intense dedication to her brother, Miyuki is perhaps the best sister you could ever wish for. Her loyalty to her brother, Tatsuya, is so overwhelming that she will not allow another person, yet alone man, to touch her. The mere thought of marrying someone is enough to disgust her.

In short, it is as though as she has a codependency complex, but does not leech off you and instead, offer her whole being to you for your protection and happiness. Think of how cool it would be? Miyuki is practically a guardian angel!

1. Tsukamoto Yakumo from School Rumble

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: Oct 2004 to Mar 2005

Yakumo was originally conceptualized to be the perfect wife material. Soft spoken and reserved, not much is known about her except for her extraordinary bond with family members as shown as how protective she is to her older sister, Tenma. Yakumo accepts her responsibility of a sibling without complaining. She excels in everything including cooking, sports and academics.

Her sole purpose and belief is the caring of Tenma and ensuring her happiness without expecting anything in return. Despite being only in high school and being the younger sibling, she already carries the aura of a traditional, Japanese mother. Yakumo is an exemplar of our ideal sibling to the point that we may even question if such a person truly exists. She's just... perfect in every way.

Do you agree with some of the picks from the above? Sure, some of us may have sisters that we simply can't bear with. However, the fact remains that they are still family and they just might show the least bit of concern for you, especially when you need it the most.

Is there a particular anime sister that reminds you of your own sister? Perhaps they might not be in the list, but do share with us which anime sister you feel in your opinion best reminds you of your own sister.
