Top 10 Anime Siblings of 2017

In 2017, so many great characters got a chance to shine in their own respective anime series. Whatever the genre or season they premiered in, our anime community met so many characters that we grew to love! And while many of these characters stood out in their own way, some of them were made more interesting by their relationships with one another.

Perhaps the most interesting dynamics this year were between the siblings of anime. Siblings are notorious for being some of the closest relationships, especially because these characters are usually the most honest and blunt, but supportive at the same time. The siblings that made our list exemplify these qualities for one another, helping each other grow and learn as their anime series go on. And for many of these characters, their teasing sibling antics are the most entertaining to watch!

10. Kiri and Victor Putin from Jikan no Shihaisha (Chronos Ruler)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Air Date: Jul. 2017 – Sep. 2017

One night, while visiting her brother’s grave, Koyuki Honda encounters two strange men chasing an even stranger creature. They introduce themselves as Kiri and Victor Putin, and lure the unsuspecting Koyuki into becoming bait for a trap. Wishing for her time back, Koyuki attracts the attention of a “Horologue,” a demon who seeks to steal human’s time. Victor and Kiri destroy the monster with their unique time-bending abilities. But for these Chronos Rulers, their battle for their own time is far from over…

While Kiri and Victor Putin are not siblings in the traditional sense, they are family members – Victor is actually Kiri’s father! Yet their relationship, especially during combat, makes them feel more like siblings. Victor was cursed in his past to become younger each day, so that he appears to be Kiri’s brother even though he is actually 39 years old. The two Putins look out for one another in a protective brotherly sense as they go along on their dangerous adventure.

9. The Princes from Oushitsu Kyoushi Heine (The Royal Tutor)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Apr. 2017 – June 2017

Heine Wittgenstein is a brilliant young man, but is sometimes underestimated due to his childlike appearance. Because he has so much respect, Heine has been asked by the king of Grannzreich to become the new royal tutor for the four young princes who are competing for the throne. These four princes act like anything but royalty, each with own unique personalities! The youngest prince Licht is a flirt, Leonhard is immature, Bruno is studious and the oldest Kai is the quietest of the bunch. Can Heine help any of these princes become ready to take the throne?

Though the four Grannzreich princes are competing against one another to become king, they have a surprisingly amiable relationship with one another. Each prince has their own personality differences, yet they all get along as brothers and seem to want the best for one another. The siblings know each other better than anyone else, helping each other through their various struggles. Even as Heine helps them grow as individuals, the brothers lift each other up and push one another to be the best that they can be. Though they can sometimes be jealous of another brother’s achievements, the princes truly want their brothers to succeed. Licht, Leonhard, Bruno, and Kai are a great example of how siblings can be so vastly different in interests, yet still support one another.

The Mitama triplets are three rambunctious cat-girls, with both an older sister and younger sister who are angels (literally). The family lost their mother through unnamed reasons, so are reliant upon their father to raise them, though the oldest sister Manami does everything to care for her siblings. It is through the eyes of the innocent Mitama triplets that we see their world, as they ask questions of strangers and one another to learn how the world works. These girls brought life to the anime series, even though they were simply supporting characters. Their antics with one another and their two sisters were perfectly hilarious, indicative of closeness between the members of their family.

Two of the prestigious warriors in this year’s Juuni Taisen are Snake and Dragon, twin brothers competing for their conjoined Zodiac clans. These twins have been through the roughest parts of the streets, hiring themselves out as mercenaries for anyone who will pay them. Although Snake and Dragon planned on competing together, they also had to acknowledge that only one of them could live in the end. However, they never got the chance to compete together, since Snake was killed as soon as the brothers arrived at the orientation room. As this next part of Kei’s life kicks off, some of his strongest supporters have always been the Kawamoto sisters – Akari, Momo, and Hinata. These three have grown up largely without a mother, relying mainly on Akari to provide the caring, nurturing aspect of their family. Their kind inclusiveness extends to those around them, especially Rei. In particular, Akari has been protective of her family and defends Rei against his foster sister. In one of the most underappreciated comedic anime series this season, Umaru and her friends are back for yet another season of shenanigans! This time around, we get to see a bit more balance to the many faces of Umaru. We also get a closer look at the various characters’ friendships as their relationships develop over the course of events. With an equally funny and emotional pull this season, Himouto! Umaru-chan R is able to stand out from many other anime in 2017.

In a cast of rather ridiculous characters, Umaru’s brother Taihei manages to hold his own, even next to his sister. Taihei consistently cooks for his lazy sister, as he is a hardworking and kind person. However much he tries to be a good influence on Umaru, Taihei often gets easily talked into doing what she wants, though he seems to enjoy being helpful to his sister generally. The two siblings are pretty opposite from one another, having vastly different interests, but they still support one another through all of the crazy situations.

But just as they are trying to decide what to do with Rin, the left eye of the Impure King is stolen from the Academy! Rin is dispatched with his other classmates to discover the truth behind these events, but he finds himself on the outskirts as his former friends no longer trust him. Yet when events take a drastic turn for the worst, the ExWires will need all the strength they can get…

Rin and Yukio have a unique relationship that continues to grow and change over time. Though Yukio has always been the brighter and more protective of the two, he does need Rin’s strength of mind to help him from time to time. Rin doesn’t take things seriously, while Yukio is the exact opposite, providing a grounded view of the world. Though Yukio is jealous of Rin and hates him on a certain level, he continues to look out for his twin brother. They are bonded by their familial heritage, sharing a fear and loathing of themselves due to being both demon and human.

1. Chiaki and Konoha Hoshinomori from Gamers!

  • Episodes: 12
  • Air Date: Jul. 2017 – Sep. 2017

But when he unexpectedly runs into Karen, she invites him to join her game club, of which she is actually the president! While you’d think this would be the perfect opportunity for Keita, this initial encounter actually sets in motion the most hilarious series of events. Moment after moment of miscommunication between friends will make these characters realize – relationships might be more difficult than video games!

In a host of ridiculous characters, Chiaki and Konoha Hoshinomori are sisters who bring a hint of serious emotion. The audience gets to watch as these two sisters support one another through every insane circumstance. By the end of the series, Konoha and Chiaki have a heart-to-heart conversation about how they want to improve, and they end their adventures happily watching a parade together, excited for the future to come. Konoha was arguably Chiaki’s biggest supporter throughout the show, lying to protect her big sister and playing along with the insane schemes. If you’re looking for the definition of a wholesome sibling relationship, Konoha and Chiaki are the perfect example!
