There is a certain aspect of anime that makes it a little bit more enjoyable: the classical animal sidekick! That bundle (it usually is a bundle) of cuteness that is always there to spice up the life of the protagonists. Or maybe they are not cute at all. Or maybe the pet is too spicy and ends up being annoying. Or perhaps the anime could go perfectly well without it. Some of them downright freak you out. Thus ladies and gentlemen, this is a Top 10 dedicated to all those anime pests!

10. Albert Chamomile (Negima! Magister Negi Magi)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: January 6, to June 29, 2005

Sometimes simply called “Chamo”, this cute and fluffy ermine is Negi the magician’s familiar. Albert is a great adviser, especially when others panick. This does not mean his advice is 100% trustworthy though. Albert can also do some magic, like anti-telepathy spells and drawing magic circles.

Generally speaking, Chamo can pass a a cool pet, unless we mention the small detail that he is a perverted smoking ermine. Actually, Chamo arrived to Negi’s door after being accused of stealing lingerie. Uncomfortable, right? Albert also keeps track of Negi’s fan club’s feelings. Chamo also voices the tracks loud, provoking several awkward situations. Better keep your mouth shut, dear Chamo, otherwise you are annoying.

9. Hippo (Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch)

  • Episodes: 52
  • Aired: Apr 5, 2003 to Mar 27, 2004

This blue penguin with very big black eyes uses marine clothes. Hippo is the pet of the protagonist of Mermaid Melody, Lucia. She is a mermaid who is looking for her pink pearl and for the guy she saved a long time ago. Lucia disguises as an idol in earth, and along with her mermaid friends and Hippo, has many adventures in the surface.

So, Hippo is some sort of guide for Lucia. He keeps trying to advise her and is against her infatuation with a human. Just let Lucia follow her heart, you nosy penguin! Although polite, Hippo also can be dumb sometimes, like when he ate the bread Lucía left to find their way back in a dark night. Hippo is a well intentioned penguin, but he ends up being annoying.

8. Black Cat (Shikabane Hime)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Oct 2, 2008 to Dec 25, 2008

Kuroneko, or Black Cat, is, well… a black cat. Shikabane Hime is an anime about zombies and mysteries, so it makes perfect sense that the protagonist Ouri is pursued by a black cat. Kuroneko reminds him of a black cat he used to have as a child but that unfortunately was ran over by a car.

The thing with Black Cat is that sometimes it appears out of the blue, startling the protagonist and us too. Its presence can be eerie and scary, thus he can be counted as annoying. Plus, if you are not a fan of cats, its hizzing and shiny eyes can look more than dangerous, making you lose the continuity of the story.

7. Steak (Tegami Bachi)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: October 3, 2009 to March 27, 2010

Meet this rather weird magical pet, Steak. Baby dragon? Rat with a moustache? Nope, Steak is a rare specimen of Kapel Meister, an animal that was thought to be extinct in the world of AmberGround. He can smell the weaknesses of Gaichuu, which makes the lives of his owner Niche and their travel companion Lag easier.

Although Steak is useful, well… his design is awful. He is used as hat? Really? But well, we could pass that fault if not for Steak’s lack of backbone. Niche is always bullying him, particularly with her unsuccessful fixation of cooking him. Seeing this gag run again and again in the anime, and watching poor Steak accepting his faith as a meal gets tiring and annoying.

6. Myouga (Inuyasha)

  • Episodes: 167
  • Aired: October 16, 2000 to September 13, 2004

So, what were we saying about stray dogs? They all carry fleas, right? Well, our favorite half demon dog is not the exception. Myouga, the demon flea, was a servant of Inuyasha’s father, Inu no Taisho. Now he serves Inuyasha, carrying information about friends, foes and the shards of the Shikon pearl they are trying to collect.

Myouga is one of the most cowardly characters in the series, to the point that other characters know a place is safe if the demon flea is there. He has a tendency to greet Inuyasha by drinking his blood and being slapped for not doing it with permission. One never knows when Myouga is going to appear, but his constant jumps and womanizing attitudes don’t amuse us either. Oh, and he has been running away from his fiancee, Shouga, like for forever. Myouga is an annoying coward.

5. Pen Pen (Shin Seiki Evangelion)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: October 4, 1995 to March 27, 1996

This is the only animal mascot in Shin Seiki Evangelion, adopted by Major Misato Katsuragi. Pen Pen is a “warm water” penguin with retractable claws under his flippers. This means that he enjoys hot water, although he lives in a fridge. He also enjoys the same type of food and beer as his owner.

We might think that Pen Pen is intelligent, as has been seen watching T.V. and reading the newspaper, but he doesn’t do anything else! Pen Pen is just there, as a non charismatic penguin. He is not even cute! Pen Pen’s presence on the world of Shin Seiki Evangelion is annoying and completely unnecessary.

4. Plue (Fairy Tail)

  • Episodes: 277
  • Aired: October 12, 2009 to March 26, 2016

Happy or Plue? It was a hard decision to choose between these two pets, but Plue won in the end. This strange snowman like creature is a Nikora, a celestial spirit summoned by a Silver Key in the world of Earth-Land. Unlike other celestial spirits with powerful magic and combat abilities, the Nikora don’t have any particularly strong features.

Plue spends his time being the pet of one of the protagonists, the sorceress Lucy Heartfilia. It is true he is polite, but Plue gets on your nerves when he trembles. Besides that, Plue just eats and sleeps? We were expecting more from a magical being than a jelly like snowman! This is another pet that was not necessary for the story.

3. Muco (Itoshi no Muco)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: 3 October 2015 to 26 March 2016

There is a lovely dog race from Japan called Shiba Inu. Maybe you have seen there somewhere, as they are cute, fluffy, white and caramel colored dogs. Muco is one of such dogs. She is the pet of Komatsu, a glassblower.

Sometimes, anime has offered us slices of life centered on animals with good results. Unfortunately, we can not say the same about Itoshi no Muco. We don’t understand why it had so much success as short anime capsules before becoming a full anime. The typical faithful dog that is playful to the point of being dumb gets on your nerves after some time. Maybe if you are fan of quick and short anime for fun you will appreciate Muco, but hell, she is annoying in the long run.

2. Gonbe (One Piece)

  • Episodes: Unknown
  • Aired: Oct 20, 1999 to present

One Piece has had a long ride in the otaku world. This anime has introduced us to a wide, diverse universe populated by the most interesting and extravagant characters. Some of the pets in One Piece have marked personalities or simply are there in the right place and at the right time (like Salome, Boa Hancock’s pet). Unfortunately, we can not say any of this about Gonbe.

In first place, he has an annoying owner, Chimney. In second place, Gonbe looks like a blue rabbit but behaves like a cat. This is not original, this is plainly dumb. In third place, he copies Chimney ALL the time. Like, honestly Gonbe, get a life! And in fourth place… do you remember when Chimney and Gonbe sang? Totally annoying.

1. Inko (Toradora!)

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: Oct 2, 2008 to Mar 26, 2009

This lady parakeet is the mascot of one of the protagonists, the apparently cold but kind Ryuuji Takasu. Inko is supposed to be a healthy and normal pet, but just a look at her face makes us wonder if she was not run over by a car or something. Inko is visually unappealing and her eyes stand looking at different directions. Although Inko can say some words and even phrases, she struggles to say her own name. And what struggles! Inko practically twists all of her body.

We understand that Toradora! is mainly comedy, but was it necessary to make such a weird pet? Inko also does not add much to the plot. Did the anime pet for Toradora! forcefully have to talk? Why not use a cat or a dog instead? Or at least make her look less dumb. Her voice, her looks, everything about her is annoying.

Final thoughts

And there you have them! Ten anime pets that can get in your nerves sometimes. Ok, some of them are annoying the whole time. But do tell us, which other annoying anime pets do you know? Don’t forget that we are open to all your comments and suggestions. See you soon!
