“Let there be light!”
What instantly comes to mind when we think of that statement? Perhaps the opposite of what was? darkness? What we often see and hear about in our culture are these two symbols: dark and light, an image of opposites. Light is frequently used to convey positivity, life, goodness, hope and sudden moments of clarity. Light presents itself in various forms of media, such as literature, expression, films, and of course anime! In this context and for the sake of this article, light is applied to our heroes who wield this awesome superpower. Although a peculiar superpower—one that doesn’t instantly come to mind, we only wonder, how can light be used to kick ass?
With that said, we present a list of the top ten characters who wield the power of light. We know there are many more characters out there that shine brighter than the sun and here’s what we’ve gathered so far! It’s bedazzling!
10. Seiji Date from Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors)
- Episodes: 39
- Aired: April 1988 – March 1989
For many millennia, an evil emperor called Talpa had only one objective in mind: to conquer the planet. After failed attempts and defeat, Talpa was banished to the Nether Realm and stripped of his power. Furthermore, Talpa’s armor was divided into nine separate suits. Unfortunately, Talpa was still unstoppable; as he returned to Earth bent on conquering the planet once more. In doing so, he successfully reclaims four of his suits. As for the other five, they are in possession of his rivals, The Ronin Warriors, the only hope of stopping him once and for all.
One of the warriors is named Seiji Date, the mature and reserved member of the group. He comes from a very traditional background, but the women of his family hold power, something uncommon during this era. Seiji holds the Halo suit or Korin, which draws its power from no particular light source. As a master swordsman, he wields a blade or two summoning such powers as Thunderbolt Cut and Lightning Strike, allowing a ray or slash of light to emerge from the blade.
9. Kouga Pegasus from Seint Seiya Omega

- Aired: April 2012 – March 2014
The story of Saint Seiya builds its foundation on five mystical warriors who have sworn to defend the reincarnation of the goddess Athena. Adorned with “Cloths” and utilizing the power of the Cosmos, the Saints aid her against the other Olympian gods’ conquest of Earth. The god of war, Mars, was sealed away by Seiya, but a new dawn approaches where he will once again revive. We then follow an orphan named Kouga, who under the care of Athena, is about to embark on a quest of his own. Training endlessly for many months, more challenges await him after the threat unfolds.
Kouga can use the element of Light after a tumultuous battle with the darkness that still resides deep within him. An heir of Pegasus, Kouga can perform several light abilities through his fists. His light techniques pack a punch!
8. Masaki Kurusu from GetBackers
- Episodes: 49
- Aired: October 2002 – September 2003
Ban Mido and Ginji Amano are known as the Get Backers. Whatever is lost or stolen, they can retrieve with a 100 percent success rate. With such positive results, you would think these guys are killin’ it, but Ban and Ginji have difficulty securing gigs. When they do get hired, they often perform dangerous jobs, often leading to unwanted engagements with risky and menacing individuals. One character we encounter in the series is Masaki Kurusu, one of the remaining members of the Four Gods during the era of VOLTS. He’s a companion of the duo, with techniques that allow him to control light earning him the title “Flash Master.” As he can manipulate light to his advantage, Masaki is a difficult opponent to beat.
7. Sigmond from Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai (Unbreakable Machine-Doll)

- Aired: October 2013 – December 2013
In Unbreakable Machine Doll, the story begins with Japanese teen Raishin Akabane, who suffers a tragedy when his family is murdered. His luck slowly turns when he meets a woman who gifts him a doll. This doll is a humanoid automaton, Yaya, who accompanies him as part of his puppeteer training. As Raishin and Yaya compete against the top students at Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart, this duo of Puppeteer and automaton must work with one another to gain the title of “Wiseman,” one who is given access to the most potent forbidden arts.
Sigmund is Charlotte Belew’s automaton. He takes the form of a dragon and is also a banned doll. Sigmund’s light ability is called Lustre Flare, allowing him to fire multiple lasers from his mouth and directing to several foes at once. The flares of light are shaped like sharp needles, holding their form even after securing their targets.
6. J. Geil from JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Stardust Crusaders

- Aired: April 2014 – September 2014
Joutarou Kuujou remains incarcerated in the hope that he is never released. Even though he’s never committed any crime, Joutarou believes he is possessed by a terrible evil bent on harming the innocent. Later on, a Stand within Joutarou’s mother awakens, threatening to kill her in a few months. As they travel great distances to find the immortal being responsible for her condition, Joutarou and company encounter a handful of Stand users who hold back their efforts in finding a remedy to save his mother.
J. Geil is an enemy our hero faces. Someone with an unwelcoming appearance, J. Geil’s disfigurement does not reflect on his light ability. His Stand reflects light, swiftly and at a distance and can attack without getting too close. Additionally, his light Stand attacks both reflection and actual being.
5. Licht from Black Clover
- Episodes: 60+
- Aired: October 2017 - Ongoing
Black Clover follows the story of two boys, Asta and Yuno, as they go on a quest to become the “Wizard King,” known throughout the kingdom as the most powerful mage, Asta and Yuno vowed to one another to compete for this famed title. After some time, the boys drift apart but reunite when Lebuty, someone who wants Yuno’s Grimoire as his own, attacks Yuno. Lebuty’s power surpasses Yuno’s, but after hearing a familiar voice, he fights with all his might, and bestowed the “Black Clover.” Lebuty is defeated, and the two boys unify to continue their promise.
As the two embark on their journey, they meet a kind-hearted elf named Licht. With a name that means light, Licht’s magical powers equally match his skill in swordsmanship. Compassionate in helping those around him, Licht’s role among the elves is in and of itself a guiding light. Being a powerful Mage with his own Four Leaf Grimoire, Licht wields a rare skill, Light Magic.
4. Azazel from High School DxD New

- Aired: July 2013 – September 2013
High School DxD New continues the story of high school pervert Issei Hyoudou. As a member of the Occult Research Club, everyone participates in usual club activities, except they all notice that there is something off with Yuuto Kiba, their beloved Knight. Seeking an explanation, Issei soon discovers the troubling dark detail of Yuuto’s past and how he is connected to the mysterious Holy Swords. Digging further into his history, we learn that Yuuto was a subject in an awful experiment, and is seeking revenge on the individuals who harmed him. Once again, Issei and his gang tackle on an incredible conquest.
Azazel is the staff advisor of the Occult Research Club. He is a strapping man in his twenties with an overall easy going personality. However, when the going gets tough, the tough get going, as Azazel’s strength increases with the power of light. With his spears of light, he can perform a wide range of attacks. Azazel has innovated his methods of striking with light.
3. Maya Yotsuba from Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (The Irregular at Magic High School)

- Aired: April 2014 – September 2014
Society has seen much growth and development, such as the landscape of the world, its infrastructure, and even culture have shifted. Magic is now imbued in the normalcy of our day-to-day lives and drives new technological advances. The harbingers of such changes are the ever-growing workforce of trained magicians, educated at magic schools such as the elite First High School. Tatsuya Shiba and his sister Miyuki are siblings enrolled here but are separated by the structured cast system that seeks to divide the gifted “blooms” from those whose skills are lacking called “weeds.” Miyuki is sent to the former and Tatsuya, exhibiting no magical talent, is assigned to the latter. Though the harnessing of magic is not his strong suit, he is prodigious when it comes to magic engineering and battle.
Magic runs in the blood. Maya Yotsuba is Shiba and Miyuki’s aunt and is recognized as one of the strongest Magicians of their age. Her Meteor Stream ability controls the distribution of light in an area with an advantage in enclosed spaces such as tunnels or caves. Her power is quite complex, and defense against it is tough.
2. Borsalino/ Admiral Kizaru from One Piece

- Aired: October 2004 – March 2012
In a time when pirates reigned over land and sea, there was one pirate that stood above the rest: Gol D. Roger, who was the most prominent “Pirate King” to sail the seas. Upon his capture and death at the hands of the World Government, his last words invoked a challenge to the next generation of pirates. Among the challengers is Monkey D. Luffy, quickly distinguishing himself with the highest bounty to boot. Luffy and his Straw Hat crew, each with missions of their own, dream of sailing the Grand Line in search of riches, fame, and glory. Their adventurous spirits take them on an incredible voyage with countless twists and turns.
Borsalino or Admiral Kizaru of the Marines possess the power of the Pika Pika no Mi fruit, granting him the power of light. The element of light lets Borsalino attack at light speeds, pass objects through his body, shoot rays of light and teleport. He is a destructive force, probably one of the most powerful opponents the Straw Hats face.
1. Maki Ichinose from Bleach

Ichigo Kurosaki is an average teenage boy with the ability to see ghosts. When Ichigo encounters an evil spirit known as a Hollow, he meets a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki who, unfortunately, is harmed while trying to protect Ichigo and his family. To help rescue his family, Ichigo agrees to take on the role of Soul Reaper. With this responsibility, Ichigo, along with his friends, takes on the challenge of stopping the Hollows that have taken over.
Maki Ichinose is a Shinigami, stern and obedient with a strong sense of duty and honor, placing him at the top spot. Maki’s Shikai holds vast amounts of spiritual energy, creating infinite amounts of light. Using light, Maki can control and manipulate light power for other various defenses such as to blind, alter perception, create a blade of light, surround himself with light to become invisible, and engulfing enemies in a sphere of light. Maki’s light superpower administers critical blows every time.
