10. My Love Story!! (JPN: Ore Monogatari!!)

  • Episodes: 24

hile most love stories evolve around a girl’s emotions towards a guy in her school, My Love Story!! pursuits the theme differently, in the sense that it starts with the protagonist being a guy instead of a girl. It tells the tale of how whoever Gouda Takeo ends up falling for, she always falls for his best friend — Sunakawa Makoto. The story starts to change a little bit when Takeo enters high school as a freshman and saves a girl from being molested on the train. Rinko Yamato the aforementioned girl fell in love with Takeo after he saved her.

While some might find the idea of a cute girl falling for someone like Takeo funny others might find it sweet and endearing. Characters that look like Takeo normally don’t have love interests. Another source of humour is Takeo’s obliviousness about Rinko’s feelings towards him as he always assumes that women are attracted to his best-friend Makoto. This anime is relatable to anyone who has ever fallen for someone and thinks that person doesn’t like them for whatever reason. It’s lighthearted atmosphere and the characters are what draws the viewers to this anime.

9. Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches (JPN: Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo)

One of the reasons Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches has made it onto this list is because of its absurd introduction to the plot. Yamada Ryuu, the protagonist, is known to be someone who is burnt out by school and drudges through year after year, feeling almost somewhat like he’s in a rut. One day, Yamada falls from a flight of stairs into the school ace, Shiraishi Urara. When he comes to, he realizes he is in the nurse’s office, however, there’s a slight problem — he’s in Shiraishi’s body!

After slowly investigating a way to get normal, both Yamada and Shiraishi find that they must share a kiss in order to revert back to normal. Of course, they are not the only two in the entire school who have accidentally switched bodies, but there is a whole group of people who have been swapped and could not find a way to be themselves again!

It is later dictated that the reason people inside the school share kisses is because there were witches who acted as “mirrors” and projected people’s desires onto one another. Evidently, this causes chaos amongst the school as well as amongst the characters, making for an interesting and humorous anime!

8. Kamisama Kiss 2 (JPN: Kamisama Hajimemashita)

A continuation of its first season, this anime is about a mortal girl who is granted the powers of a deity of the Earth by a supernatural being named Mikage. After receiving these powers, Momozono Nanami must maintain Mikage’s shrine by performing the duties of a god, which include things such as granting wishes to believers of the Earth deity and attending special meetings held for the gods of the other world -- all while still attending high school like a normal person.

Although this anime is labeled as a shoujo, it is also incredibly humorous in its representation of what being a human-god is like. While mostly cute and the slightest bit romantic, Kamisama Kiss has incredibly likeable characters that start out as being absolutely serious, but over time, you will learn to love them as they make jokes and jabs every now and then.

It is definitely an anime that will put a smile on your face, more than just in terms of the romance between Nanami and Tomoe, the male protagonist of the story. Of course, the humor in this anime is quite conventional, leaving a familiar taste in your mouth as you flip through the episodes. With an added flare for romance and humor, Kamisama Kiss also provides a light-hearted atmosphere that is bound to keep you wanting more.

7. Uta no Prince-sama Revolutions

Uta no Prince-Sama Revolutions is the third season of the Utapri series and mainly centres around Nanami Haruka, a student at the Saotome Academy, a prestigious performing arts school. If she's successful, she'll be able to join the Shining Agency after graduation! However, it proves to be a challenge when Haruka is already surrounded by potential idols and composers. In this season, Haruka has won the Utapri reward and the idol group, Starish.

They continue to be successful in the industry together with another idol group Quartet Night — Starish's seniors. This time in the entertainment industry, there is a battle for opening artists in an international sports event, which is held once a year and is considered the greatest sports event in the world! There are many elite artists and entertainers but only one can win.

The humour in this anime is very zany and an element of romance is in it, as well. The viewer will love this if romantic comedies are their go to, though it’s important to note that the romantic aspect of this anime does not overpower the actual plot. It follows a faithful description of the idol business with a hint of magical realism. There is an amount of fan service, but it isn't distracting and actually adds to the humor, making it a bonus!

Now this is a unique food anime, and here’s why: Ryou, the protagonist, is a middle school girl that lives by herself and cooks her own food. The catch is that she makes friends through her cooking! The manga itself has detailed illustrations of the food that she cooks, which in turn, makes the animation gorgeous in terms of how they're presented! Of course, the anime does belong in the ‘moe’ genre, with cute, young girls doing cute things.

Essentially, this anime is thought to be a slice of life, but there are of course various moments in the anime itself that are quite humorous, although it is the type of humour that you most likely have seen before somewhere else.

5. Ultimate Otaku Teacher (JPN: Denpa Kyoushi)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: April 2015 - August 2015

Denpa Kyoushi follows Junichirou, a young man obsessed with anime, manga and games. Junichirou is actually a genius who published science and nature journals when he was 17. The downside is that he threw all this potential down the drain and decided to become a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). Eventually he becomes a teacher due to his sister wanting him to get a proper job. He is originally reluctant about his new job but soon enough he finds himself drawn to his students’ conflicts and the students themselves are drawn to his unconventional teaching practices.

This anime is very similar to the anime Great Teacher Onizuka. The only difference is the comedy is mainly through Junichirou being an unothrodox teacher and his sister's reaction to his otakuism. This anime is very eccentric and the situations the characters get themselves are what makes the anime so funny. Humour is hard to come by and this anime can definitely liven up the mood.

4. Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma

This anime follows the life of Yukihira Souma, a middle school boy who dreams of inheriting his father’s restaurant and surpassing his skills. However, when his father decides to shut down the family restaurant for another job in Europe, Yukihira Souma decides to enrol in an elite culinary school in order to prove to himself, as well as his father, that with his skills, his father’s restaurant can be better than before! The only catch is: only 10% of students enrolled at the school will succeed. This leaves the burning question for Yukihira Souma: will he be able to get himself up into that 10%?

While this anime contains a level of competitiveness that exists in themes of surpassing the previous generation, fruitful and unique characters will definitely create a whole new atmosphere for the show. Similar to Silver Spoon (JPN: Gin no Saji) in terms of the culinary aspects, the fact that the characters are younger will provide a fresher feel and by default, will provide more humor! Certainly, if you also like to watch anime where the characters simply cook, this anime is definitely for you!

At first glance, this anime seems like a slice-of-life about a woman, Tsunashi Kaoru, who works hard to support herself and her husband, Tsunashi Hajime. There’s a catch however: Hajime is an absolute otaku. Their daily lives consist of references to terms and aspects of the otaku culture that are somewhat popular, which evidently, Kaoru cannot keep up with, due to the vastly different mentality both herself and Hajime exhibit. However, despite their somewhat varying personalities, this anime shows the couple at their best, with especially touching moments between Kaoru and Hajime that you wouldn’t expect to see in an anime like this!

Even from just the title of this anime, one can already tell that it’s one that you definitely will not forget. Of course, the style of this anime is not conventional in terms of length. Each segment is around three minutes long, and despite that, it is still better in terms of humour than most comedic anime out there! Although it is classified as an anime that starts out as focusing on the relationship dynamic between Kaoru and Haijme, there are moments when Hajime drops the title of an otaku and connects with his wife, making the experience of watching this anime all the more memorable!

Strangely similar to Gintama in terms of aliens interacting with people, this anime tells the story of five school boys who meet a wombat-like alien and come together to form the ‘Earth Defense Club’, intending to protect Earth and to spread love all around. Of course, this isn’t the only layer of this anime. Behind the lovely animation and the likeable characters, there lies one big question: is there actually a secret lurking behind the Binan High School? Like Gintama, underneath all the layers of pure humor, lies a story that is worth listening to!

Although the surface is somewhat similar to Gintama, this anime actually acts as a parody of the ‘magical girls’ genre, with the main characters being boys instead of girls! In just twelve episodes, the story is pretty cyclical and each episode contains jokes and witty banter between the characters that are just plain bizarre.

1. Gintama

binan-koukou-chikyu-boueibu-wallpaper-671x500 Top 10 Hilarious Anime So Far Winter to Spring 2015 [Best Recommendations]
  • Episodes: unknown
  • Aired: April 2015 — present

If you are a fan of Gintama, then you would know that this anime has been taken off the air and on again ever since 2006. Although it is not recognised for its love stories or action-packed scenes like most Jump comics and anime are, it is definitely known for its much too adulterated humor. Despite the fact that the story is meant to evolve around Tokyo during the Edo period in which samurais had lost their influence over the country, this anime is a creative take on how things have evolved in that setting, while mixing modern concepts with traditional ones.

Gintama is popular among audiences in their 20s, which is why it’s not as hyped up as other comedic anime. The jokes and puns are sometimes so ridiculously absurd that you can’t help but laugh through almost an entire episode. What makes this anime special is that while you may laugh until your stomach hurts, you may also cry until your chest is heaving. It is powerful in its delivery of darker themes that contribute to a character’s past, while simultaneously telling inappropriate jokes that you will love!

'Human beings are made of water–- we were not designed to hold ourselves together, rather; run freely like oceans, like rivers.' Two of my favorite things in the world is nature and laughing until you can't remember what was so funny. When things are difficult and you feel as though you are a cacophony of profanities and anxiety, just remember: we are made of water and can move as freely as we wish.
