9. 7 Days to Die

  • System/Platform: PC, OS X, PS4, Xbox One
  • Developer: The Fun Pimps
  • Publisher: The Fun Pimps, Telltale Publishing (consoles)
  • Release Date: Jun 28, 2013

When World War III hit, there was a terrible consequence: a nuclear fallout unlike any other before. Most of the world has been devastated but some areas remain habitable like Navezgane, Arizona. Having survived yourself, you need to find food, water and shelter to survive. However, there is one other consequence of the nuclear war and that comes in the form of deadly zombies aiming to devour you. Fight alone or with others to survive in 7 Days to Die.

What screams survival more than zombie games? 7 Days to Die is an excellent first person indie survival game that tasks players to just survive as long as they can. During the day, players will have to deal with slow moving zombies all while finding food and water to keep themselves alive. However, when night approaches players will find zombies faster and more aggressive meaning you’ll need to build strong shelters to have a chance at fighting back. If you find surviving alone a lonely ordeal, you can enable multiplayer to have others join your world but that doesn’t always mean they want to help you and could be aggressive. With multiple ways to play and to survive, 7 Days to Die by developer The Fun Pimps is an awesome indie survival game with plenty of room to continue growing as time goes by.

8. Subnautica

  • System/Platform: PC, MacOS, Xbox One
  • Developer: Unknown Worlds Entertainment
  • Publisher: Unknown Worlds Entertainment
  • Release Date: Dec 16, 2014

Set to explore an unknown world, your ship crash lands into an ocean based world. Now you are forced to dive into the depths to have any chance at surviving. You’ll need to find food and water all while managing your ever shrinking oxygen levels. As beautiful as the water may be, that doesn’t mean everything here is beautiful. What lies in this water world can be very deadly and end your life in the blink of an eye.

Developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment truly created a unique experience with Subnautica. Unlike most indie survival games where you’re above land and having to craft normally, Subnautica aims to make players explore an underwater environment teeming with different underwater entities. Subnautica is also a beautiful experience with unique weapons and odd creations that makes it a truly unique first person title. If you’re looking for a gaming title that destroys a lot of the indie survival tropes, we recommend Subnautica. Who knew the underwater world held so many untapped gaming potentials?

7. The Forest

  • System/Platform: PC, OS X
  • Publisher: Endnight Games
  • Developer: Endnight Games
  • Release Date: May 30, 2014

On a trip together with his son Timmy, Eric Leblanc hopes for just a relaxing trip. During the flight things seem to go awry causing the ship to stutter. Then without warning, the plane begins a harsh crash landing on an unknown island. Having survived, Eric and Timmy are quickly greeted by an odd bunch of people who take Timmy away from Eric. Now, Eric must somehow find his son and all the while survive against what lies within the forest…

Unlike most indie survival titles, The Forest aims to tell a story all while having survival gameplay. You will have to create and forge for items all while trying to find Timmy’s location on this strange island. Your task won’t be simple though as there are a slew of threats such as odd mutants and creatures aiming to impede your progress. The Forest looks incredible and while it’s still in early development—as of writing this list—The Forest already seems to be shaping up to be incredible. This third person survival title by developer Endnight Games will be a title you’ll want to try and keep your eyes out for a full release hopefully soon.

6. DayZ

  • System/Platform: PC
  • Developer: Bohemia Interactive
  • Publisher: Bohemia Interactive
  • Release Date: Dec 16, 2013

Taking place during a zombie apocalypse DayZ drops players into a huge open world. You’ll need to find food, weapons, armor and tools to have a chance at surviving. However, be aware that there are others in this world who may approach you with ill intentions. You’ll need to rely on your foraging skills if you want to survive in this deadly world. DaysZ will test you unlike any other FPS survival title ever before.

While still in the early alpha stages, DayZ still is considered, by most gamers, to be an epic gaming title. The randomized worlds and use of survival ideals makes DayZ a unique zombie indie survival game that truly pushes the genre. There are still a lot of ideas running through developer Bohemia Interactive with future plans to update the game to include various things such as diseases and other small details but right now there still in development. Bohemia Interactive has also told gamers that a possible console release is being developed meaning soon owners of the PS4 and Xbox One may be able to enjoy DayZ on a console platform of their choice. DayZ is obviously not finished yet but even after 4 years we here at Honey’s Anime are only seeing positive updates in this epic indie survival game.

5. Don’t Starve

  • System/Platform: PS4, Android, Xbox One, iOS, PS3, PC, OS X, PS Vita, Wii U
  • Developer: Klei Entertainment
  • Publisher: Klei Entertainment, 505 Games
  • Release Date: Apr 23, 2010

Young chemist Wilson is currently struggling to make a new creation. All too conveniently, a strange voice makes contact with Wilson via a radio. The radio begins to tell Wilson how to build a strange device and Wilson obeys. Having second thoughts upon completion, Wilson doesn’t want to pull the switch. However, the radio somehow convinces the young chemist and ends up causing Wilson to be dragged into a strange world where he will have to survive against a strange and harsh environment.

Developer Klei Entertainment clearly knew what they were aiming for in Don’t Starve. With a mixture of Minecraft elements and original ideas, Don’t Starve tasks players to survive by any means. You’ll have to wander around a randomized map to find food, weapons and strange artifacts to survive and find some way home. Death, like in most games, means restarting from scratch which can be frustrating but with such a beautiful world--more so dark but beautiful—players will find themselves addicted to Don’t Starve. Definitely check out Don’t Starve for a unique co-op or single player indie survival game experience.

4. Terraria

  • System/Platform: PS4, PC, OS X, iOS, Xbox One, Nintendo 3DS, Android, Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita
  • Publisher: 505 Games, Re-Logic, Headup Games (EU)
  • Developer: Re-Logic
  • Release Date: May 16, 2011

In Terraria, players are thrown into a random 2D map where survival is key. Players will need to build shelters, weapons and armor to fight off against various threats. Exploring is a big risk but each randomized world contains treasures and various bosses that are waiting to be found. Terraria uses a very retro looking graphical design giving players a truly unique survival experience. With no story and no set goals, Terraria allows freedom to do what you want and how you want.

Exploring and building are staples to the indie survival scene. Terraria may seem aimless and overly random but that’s the charm of the indie survival game itself. Do you want to just build giant mega structures or explore deep ruins? Neither choice is incorrect meaning you can enjoy freedom at its finest. Also, unlike most of these titles on our Top 10 Indie Survival Games list, death doesn’t mean you have to restart as you can find your items in a time limit similar to Minecraft. We love Terraria and have lost hours playing it and you’ll be the same once you enter this indie survival game as well.

3. The Long Dark

  • System/Platform: PC, OS X, Xbox One
  • Developer: Hinterland Studio Inc.
  • Publisher: Hinterland Studio Inc.
  • Release Date: Sept 22, 2014

While flying over the Canadian wilderness, your plane crashes. Luckily, you have survived but this Canadian environment is cold and treacherous. You’ll need to find resources all while exploring this huge area. Besides the harsh cold there also lies deadly beasts such as wolves and bears who wish to make you a meal. Get ready you may have survived one horrible event but now you must survive another in The Long Dark.

The Long Dark by developer Hinterland Studio Inc. is honestly one of the coolest first person indie survival games we’ve ever gotten the pleasure of playing. The Long Dark contains two game modes, story mode or sandbox mode. In the story mode, players will enjoy episodic adventures requiring the player to reach certain areas to advance the story. The sandbox mode tasks players with surviving as long as possible and death is permanent meaning a complete restart if you indeed perish. We love the unique art style that really makes the game awesome to look at and play with small details such as the day/night cycle and weather effects. For those who own a PS4, August 1st 2017 means you can enjoy The Long Dark soon if not already.

2. We Happy Few

  • System/Platform: PC, Xbox One
  • Developer: Compulsion Games
  • Publisher: Compulsion Games
  • Release Date: Jul 26, 2016

Set in a twisted version of the 1960s, you are trying to survive in an odd environment of overly happy people. These people use a drug known as Joy that keeps their minds conformed to a disturbing version of happiness. Will you be joining these people or will you try to show you don’t need to rely on Joy? Either choice means you need to survive and prove to these inhabitants you are worthy of living in their residency. Be warned if these people feel you’re not one of them you will be dealt with accordingly.

We Happy Few is a quirky and odd indie survival game from developer Compulsion Games. Players will be dropped into an odd city where you’ll interact with others with creepy smiles and even creepier actions. Like most indie survivor titles you’ll need to eat and sleep to survive as well as prove you’re a normal civilian. If the authorities or others notice you’re not like them they will chase you down and try to eliminate you. Thus this means you’ll need to run, hide and or fight to survive. We Happy Few is a creepy and quirky title but trust us folks we here at Honey’s Anime loved every second of this indie survival game. Can you believe this is still considered early access? Trust us folks we’re surprised just as much as you.

PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS will test players of the FPS genre in this new high octane title.

PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS was the best way for us to end out Top 10 Indie Survival Games list. Fusing FPS gameplay and survival themes, PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS is easily one of the best FPS titles we’ve played in the last few years. In PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS it is you versus one hundred other players and you need to be ready to fight to get that glorious first place. With a PS4 and Xbox One release in the near future, PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS will soon be ready for console players to enjoy.
