Cute, cute, cute girls, isn’t that why we watch anime? For the kawaii-tasticness that is moe characters? Every show has at least one and they always leave a lasting impression on us. Whether you show your love by putting posters on your walls, talking endlessly about them or reading fanfiction until the late hours, they’ve somehow crept their way into your hearts.
What defines a cute character can change but they all have the same thing in common; ‘dere’ which is a Japanese onomatopoeia for being lovestruck. (See our definition of tsundere for a better explanation https://honeysanime.com/what-is-tsundere-blush-i-its-not-like-i-like-you-baka-definition-meaning/). Namely, there’s just something specifically cute and lovable about them. Below is a list of the top ten most kawaii anime girls in anime ever, made from the tears and moe-cries of anime fans worldwide.
10. Asuna Yuuki from Sword Art Online
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: July 2012 - December 2012
Asuna has become quite the icon as of late and it’s no wonder. She’s incredibly beautiful and is a fairly refined, tasteful tsundere, if there ever was such a thing. She’s spunky, a good fighter, and is sub-leader of a guild called Knights of the Blood, who fight on the front lines. She meets up with Kirito after his short stint in the beginning and he’s reluctant to join any guilds but finally does so with her. They get married in the game and have a short vacation after buying a house, then return to the front lines to break out of this video game world.
Asuna starts out pretty tsundere with Kirito but it doesn’t take them too long for their feelings to intensify and to get married. They have a conversation about how real this is to them despite being in a video game. Part of the fascination with Asuna is the reality she got married to Kirito and how many fans were wishing they took his place!
9. Kanade Tachibana from Angel Beats!
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: April 2010 - June 2010
Kanade is appropriately named Tenshi, or Angel, in Angel Beats! and is a resounding character, although she calls herself the Student Council President of the school. She starts out appearing as the antagonist in this afterlife world, battling against the main characters.
It starts out with Otonashi, the protagonist, dying and ending up in this afterlife which centers on a school. He has no memories and ends up in the middle of a battle between the SSS and Angel. He joins the SSS but reluctantly; he has a fascination with Angel (don’t we all?) and causes them to bridge the gap and soon they aren’t enemies anymore.
8. Mio Akiyama from K-On!
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: April 2009-June 2009
K-On! Is the shortest, yet sweetest little pie of an anime you ever did see and many people glow over Mio Akiyama, the bass guitarist. She’s adorably shy which is why she chose plays the bass and dislikes doing the lead vocals. Even people in the series came to love her and voted her to be Romeo in the play, much to our added fanservice!
K-On!’s overall premise is a fairly simple slice of life that centers around, you guessed it, the Light Music Club. Yui excitedly wants to join this club but doesn’t actually know how to play any instruments but to avoid being disbanded, they let her join and have her learn the guitar.
7. Kobato Hasegawa from Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (I Don’t Have Many Friends)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 2011 - December 2011
What’s cuter than a blonde girl with two different colored eyes and a brother complex? Add in a love for vampires and darkness and you get a whole bundle of charm! Since she started watching an anime called Full Metal Necromancer, she claims to be known as Reisys VI Felicity Sumeragi, an ancient vampire who has lived for ten thousand years. She likes to talk in an old vampire type way but slips back into her Kyushu accent often, much to her embarrassment.
She’s the younger sister of Kodaka, who just transferred schools and, after running into a girl who didn’t have any friends, decides to start ‘Rinjinbu’, The Neighbor’s Club, for people who don’t have any friends, to make friends. Kobato joins too, despite being in middle school, and this band of misfits learn what it means to have friends and be in relationships.
6. Mirai Kuriyama from Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 2013-December 2013
Mirai is a girl who has the power to manipulate blood and Akihito, a half human, half youmu student, stops her from jumping off the roof due to her feelings of isolation because of her said powers. They quickly form a bond and start slaying youmu together, all the while she’s trying to make her own ends meet.
She’s a bit clumsy and loves to write about bonsai but that’s why we love her. Her beauty and character design really shines in this well animated, colorful series. The realistic character actions and reactions are also very believable and might be just another cause to love Mirai. Also, girls with glasses are dreamy.
5. Kotori Minami from Love Live! School Idol Project
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: January 2013 - March 2013
Love Live! Is a hit, spanning sequels, OVA’s, movies and merchandise and at the top of it all is everyone’s favorite character, Kotori Minami. Kotori and her friends attend a school with a declining school population, threatening to end the school for good. They enact the plan School Idol Project, a plan to become idols to raise popularity for the school and it proves to have its ups and downs.
Kotori is a dreamer but also the head designer, creating the delightful costumes we all know and love. She’s very kind, always caring for others but because she’s always concerned about other’s feelings, she has a hard time expressing her own as well as making decisions. She also was a famous maid in Akihabara, a dream come true for all of her fans.
4. Shiro from No Game No Life
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 2014 - June 2014
Shiro is another girl with a serious brother complex and because of this, never wants him to leave her side. At the start of the series, we’re introduced to her and her brother as a pair of NEET shut-ins who are world famous gamers named Kuuhaku. They get a chess game request and end up being transported to another world, Disboard, where everything is decided by games.
Shiro is a genius and excels at logic but has to rely on her brother to understand other people’s emotions and reactions. She seems fairly emotionless herself, has a very dry sense of humor and refuses to allow Sora be with other girls alone, as she becomes insanely jealous.
3. Rikka Takanashi from Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! (Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 2012 - December 2012
“Chuunibyou” refers to what’s called the Eighth Grade Syndrome, where you create a persona for yourself and truly believe you are that. Yuuta had it and wanted to start high school fresh but of course, that didn’t happen. Something happened and Yuuta ended up in a contract with a moe-tastic girl named Rikka.
This Rikka, who embodies the eyepatch girl fantasy, is still in Chuunibyou who believes her right eye, which she named “Wicked Eye”, is evil but tamed by the pureness of her heart. In reality, it’s just a colored contact concealed by the eyepatch. She doesn’t have very many friends and is quick to distrust strangers, to which she gets into battle mode upon first meeting but is very attached to Yuuta.
2. Illyasviel von Einzbern from Fate/kaleid liner Prisma*Illya
- Episodes: 10
- Aired: June 2013 - September 2013
Illyasviel, Illya for short, was a contender in the series Fate/stay Night and was just so precious she had to have her own series and spinoffs on the series. In this one, she’s the protagonist who’s a school girl who turns into a magical girl by the Kaleido Stick Ruby who thought her more suitable than the all-powerful Rin Tohsaka.
She, joined by Rin, looks for the seven Class Cards and meets a friend named Miyu who’s stick also chose her instead of its original intended master. Illya is all sorts of cute and no matter what series she’s in, will be a fan favorite.
1. Taiga Aisaka from Toradora!
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: October 2008 - March 2009
The most popular of all tsunderes is Taiga Aisaka, nicknamed the “Palmtop Tiger” because she is equal parts adorable, ferocious and tiny. She’s in love with the main character’s best friend and he vice versa, so they enter into a partnership of trying to help the other get their object of affection
Taiga is one of the most notable tsunderes, as she’s just so extreme and extremely cute. She’s beautiful but ferocious while her partner in crime, Ryuuji, is scary looking but kind. This contrast leads to quirky antics and making a classically humorous duo. Taiga, of course, gets numerous love confessions, which she always turns down. She’s brutal, fun-sized, and loveable and that’s why she’s number one!
Now compiling the most kawaii anime girls into one small list of 10 might seem especially hard but there is definitely at least one girl in here for you, if not all of them!
