Top 10 Kids Games for Girls [Best Recommendations]

Some of us here at Honey’s Anime have daughters, nieces, little sisters, cousins or female neighbors who play video games from all genres. Nowadays, any person can enjoy a video game no matter its age or sex, and that’s great! However, we can’t overlook the fact that a lot of games attract a certain specific audience, right?

In this case, let's talk about some video games specifically designed for girls and others that little ladies could enjoy, shall we? If you need a game to give as a present for a girl or have a toddler to play with, then check the recommendations below!

10. LEGO Friends

  • System: Nintendo 3DS
  • Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
  • Developer: TT Games, Hellbent Games
  • Release Dates: Nov. 12, 2013

If you have a girl in your house and a Netflix subscription, then you’ve probably heard of LEGO: Friends, a show inspired by the famous toys company but now with a girly focus ala Barbie. The game is directly based on the show, with Olivia and her friends at Heartlake City as the main characters.

To be honest, we could recommend any LEGO game for kids, but it may depend on the girl's taste. Does she like The Incredibles? Harry Potter? What about Marvel/DC superheroes or Star Wars? If the said girl needs something simpler or with a girly feeling, then go for LEGO: Friends! Build, explore, take care of your pet and enjoy the Summer with a lot of minigames!

9. Gabrielle’s Ghostly Groove 3D

  • System: Nintendo 3DS
  • Publisher: Natsume
  • Developer: Santa Entertainment
  • Release Dates: Oct. 4, 2011

What about another game with cute graphics and a town full of lovable citizens? As the title suggests, this is a rhythm game where we play as the titular Gabrielle, a little girl who sneezed so hard her soul left her body. And how can we help her, you ask? For Gabrielle's soul to meet her body again she needs to dance and "scare" people, and that's when the friendly monster's help comes in handy.

Ok, you won't find a deep plot here or challenging mechanics here, but that's not a big deal for a kids game. In fact, this is a great video game for little girls to play alone, gaining some coordination while meeting cute characters and having fun. Oh, and we can also win a lot of costumes and beautiful outfits for Gabrielle!

8. New Style Boutique 3 - Styling Star

  • System: Nintendo 3DS
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Syn Sophia
  • Release Dates: Nov. 24, 2017

A lot of girls enjoy fashion games, but we all know that most of them are boring apps with unnecessary microtransactions. But that's no reason to abandon the fashion world, right? Then look no further than the New Style Boutique saga! In this case, we recommend the latest addition to the family, New Style Boutique 3 - New Style, released only a few months ago.

This is a game for girls older enough to manage a boutique of their own, conquering the world with beautiful designs and helping clients and friends to look their best. However, any parent can enjoy the managing system while letting a girl decide the outfits, so this is still a game with some degree of complexity, great for girls who dream of becoming a huge celebrity.

7. A Hat in Time

  • System: Microsoft Windows, MacOS, Xbox One and PlayStation 4
  • Publisher: Gears for Breakfast, Humble Bundle
  • Developer: Gears for Breakfast
  • Release Dates: Oct. 5, 2017 (PC), Dec. 5, 2017 (PS4), Dec. 7, 2017 (X1)

Platformer games have always been tied to kids, but some of them are really difficult while others have unappealing graphics. A Hat in Time is a perfectly-crafted, colorful indie game with 3D platforming and a lot of jokes, making it very enjoyable for both kids and grown-ups alike. No wonder we all wait for a sequel or expansion!

The plot is rather absurd than epic, but you definitely have to experience it. We play as a mysterious girl who travels through space and time, trying to recover items we lost after an accident with some mafia guys. Although a lot of mechanics are just like any other 3D platformer, Hat Kid can use an umbrella and a series of hats with certain abilities to sort obstacles, which in time turns really cool. Oh, and any kid can beat the final boss, so let them be the proud heroes of this journey!

6. Just Dance 2018

  • System: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii, Wii U
  • Publisher: Ubisoft
  • Developer: Ubisoft
  • Release Dates: Oct. 24, 2017

We already recommended a rhythm game, but effectively having to move your body is not the same as tapping the 3DS screen. Just Dance is widely known as the best dancing game right now and, you know what? It has a specific game mode designed for kids with some songs intended for children, where the score is not as important as having fun with the song you like.

With a huge variety of songs that range from current pop hits to Disney songs or pop and rock classics, Just Dance 2018 is great for music lovers or girls who don't like conventional video games but may enjoy dancing, and you can find it in a lot of platforms. Just Dance 2019 is around the corner though, and you may want to wait until October for a few new songs, like Camila Cabello's "Havana" or Bruno Mars' "Finesse".

5. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (2018)

  • System: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Nintendo EAD
  • Release Dates: Nov. 13, 2014 (Wii U), Jul. 13, 2018 (3DS, Switch)

If you have a Wii U, then there's a chance you've already heard about Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, a spin-off game in the Super Mario series now starring Captain Toad, Toadette and their friends. The thing is, if you want to play that version there's no problem at all, but Nintendo's new console and the 3DS just got a brand new port of the same game, with better graphics and a few new levels inspired in Mario’s latest adventure. Now you can play it on the go!

The game consists of a series of 3D stages where Captain Toad has to find 3 —sometimes hidden— diamonds and reach the final star, with an extra task that varies in every level. Even if it's a platformer, you won't be jumping through open worlds but flipping the stage around to show inaccessible areas, ladders or elevators. All in all, this is a fun and colorful game for kids, and girls will love its cute visuals while exercising their brains a little.

4. Yoshi’s Wooly World

  • System: Wii U
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Good Feel, Nintendo SPD
  • Release Dates: Jun. 26, 2015

Talking about Nintendo games with cute graphics! This is a Wii U spin-off game in the Super Mario series now starring... wait, we already said that. Ok, so now we have another game of similar characteristics, but this time involving a Yoshi made of wool and his friends. The twist here is that almost everything has the cozy feeling of yarn and cloth, and we have to go around gathering wool to save our fellow Yoshis, who’ve been converted to bundles of yarn.

The visual style is indeed cozy and sweet, so girls will probably have a blast playing this. However, cute graphics don't necessarily mean easier games, so we recommend this game for girls above 7 years old if they want to enjoy it properly. A bonus point for this game is the possibility of a multiplayer campaign, ideal for siblings or just a parent-children bonding moment.

3. Kirby Star Allies

  • System: Nintendo Switch
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: HAL Laboratory
  • Release Dates: Mar. 16, 2018

Another of Nintendo’s stars, Kirby has its own adventure titled Kirby Star Allies, where our beloved pink ball has to save planet Pop Star from the evil Hyness and his henchmen. When some mysterious dark hearts appear and control King Dedede, Meta Knight, and other known characters, Kirby stands up and starts a journey to save the day... but Kirby can't do it alone!

The keyword here is "allies", as the game invites you to make friends who can help Kirby with their powers. If you're alone, up to 3 CPU-controlled characters can join you, but it is better if you have friends or family members to play with. Kirby and friends' animations are the sweetest thing! Girls love Kirby for a reason!

2. Animal Crossing: New Leaf

  • System: Nintendo 3DS
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Nintendo EAD
  • Release Dates: Jun. 9, 2013

It's no surprise to find so many Nintendo games in this kind of list, so let's move on to another great recommendation. Even if there are a few of Animal Crossing games to choose from, New Leaf is arguably the best one. This franchise was always about being a new villager, exploring the town, meeting a lot of memorable animal friends and building strong relationships in the process, but how about becoming the town's mayor?!

Building and decorating your house, shopping, customizing your character, doing some quests to help your new neighbors... every girl could enjoy this great video game! If you want a kid to lose herself in a dream town that offers a heartwarming story and a cast of interesting characters, then get her a copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Be prepared to hear a lot of funny anecdotes, though!

1. Super Mario Odyssey

  • System: Nintendo Switch
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Nintendo EPD
  • Release Dates: Oct. 27, 2017

The number one game for this list is equally enjoyable for boys and girls alike, but we had many examples of girls loving this game in our families. In this new adventure, Super Mario teams-up with Cappy, a hat ghost who lives in Cap Kingdom, one of the game's stages. As Bowser wants to get married, he kidnapped Princess Peach and a hat ghost named Tiara to use her as the wedding veil. Now our boys have to crush Bowser and rescue their loved ones!

Even if the damsel in distress trope is still present, Super Mario Odyssey is a huge adventure for girls, with many levels of difficulty. We must find Power Moons to fuel our airship and finally interrupt the wedding, following Bowser through many kingdoms as he gathers everything he needs for a wedding: a special dress, a special wedding cake, etc. Even if we can complete the story and call it a day, going for a 100% run is harder than it looks like, and an avoidable challenge for any Super Mario fan.

Young girls can play the easier assisted mode, but yet younger ones can play as Cappy in the co-op mode while another person plays as Mario! With one of the best 3D platforming mechanics, lots of 2D areas and nods to previous games, this is a must for every family who likes gaming sessions, and you can be sure any girl in the house will be more than happy to be a part of it.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a good video game for girls to play, now you know where to start! But don’t forget there are dozens of other similar games that a girl could love according to her likes in terms of characters, genres or stories. Even if a game is not particularly intended for kids, girls can obviously be interested in topics that maybe some games tackle in amazing ways. Also, remember that none of the games we recommended here have mature content, but we always recommend an adult to share the fun or just help them if they need a hand.

So many Nintendo games? What other titles are the younger girls of your family playing? We’d love to hear from you!

Hey! I'm Rod, and when I'm not watching anime or playing video games I'm probably writing about them, but I'm also a graphic and web designer, and I even published a comic book and worked like 4 years for a well-known MMORPG. Curiously, my favorite series are quite different from each other, so I'm still trying to understand what I really like in an anime...
