Supernatural refers to the paranormal world, things that the human eye cannot see and so that’s where the mystery and scares stem from. From spiritual rituals to catching ghosts on camera, the supernatural gaming landscape has come a long way and still continues to evolve in a remarkable way. Horror games do tend to relish in this type of area, since it’s the hauntingly exciting experience that keeps us coming back for more. Not all games however use horror to emphasize the supernatural, and so we’ll be dropping our top 10 best supernatural anime games that span across different genres ranging from RPG to adventure.
10. Corpse Party: Blood Drive
- System/Platform: PlayStation Vita
- Publisher: 5pb. | Marvelous USA
- Developer: 5pb. | Team GrisGris
- Release Date: July 24, 2014
Corpse Party: Blood Drive is the sequel to Corpse Party: Book of Shadows, and acts as the conclusion to the Heavenly Host Elementary School saga. Blood Drive stars Ayumi Shinozaki, who tried her hand at black magic only to be cursed and suffered a severe illness. Luckily she manages to survive and now must work together alongside other characters in the story to uncover more behind the Shinozaki estate and uncover the mysteries behind the Book of Shadows.
The gameplay is a hybrid of a visual novel experience which ties in role playing elements to maintain a nice harmony as you traverse through the mansion for clues. You use your flashlight to help guide you through the dark corridors of the school, which are full of deadly traps along with shadowy figures that will chase you down, so using your talisman will repel them away if you’re swift. It’s a game of exploration and evasion as you must uncover clues while trying not to get caught by these ghosts who wander around aimlessly, looking for someone to scare.
9. Resident Evil Zero
- System/Platform: Multi Platform
- Publisher: Capcom
- Developer: Capcom
- Release Date: November 12, 2002
Resident Evil has always prided itself on creating a title that departs from what is usual so as to transcend the very laws of nature, using zombies to emphasize the entire plot. Resident Evil Zero still continues with that trend as you play as both Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen of the S.T.A.R.S task force, as they work together to find out more about the virus that’s spreading across the nation.
One defining feature of Resident Evil Zero is that it incorporates a new element of gameplay never before seen in past RE titles, which is being able to control two characters almost seamlessly as they scour the environment for clues and take out nasty creatures. This, along with being able to manage items more effectively added an entirely new layer of strategy to the franchise, while the atmosphere and narrative were spot on. The action was always readily available when you needed it, while the horror experience was there to freak you out at any moment’s notice.
8. Yomawari: Night Alone
- System/Platform: PlayStation Vita, Windows
- Publisher: Nippon Ichi Software | NIS America
- Developer: Nippon Ichi Software
- Release Date: October 29, 2015
Yomawari stars a young girl who found herself in an emotional bind when her dog Poro gets into an accident, and you race back home to inform your sister of the incident. Unfortunately, your sister has also gone missing and so now you must control this young trooper and venture around the dark creepy streets of Japan’s neighbourhoods in order to seek out clues of your sister and Poro’s whereabouts, while avoiding the scary looking supernatural creatures that lie waiting in the shadows.
If you haven’t had a chance to read our review on Yomawari: Night Alone, be sure to check it out as it provides more details pertaining to the story, along with the very splending gameplay. Yomawari: Night Alone feels a lot like Resident Evil in a sense because, you’re limited to what you can use as far as weapons, and you’ll need to use sound judgment to ensure you don’t get caught by the random youkai that pop up out of nowhere. It’s truly a spooky experience because you never know what lies around each corner, while deaths are very frequent because everything is so sudden. This is definitely a must play for any fan of Japanese folklore pertaining to spirits, and for those who like a good jump scare or two.
7. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon

Now we chose the second one over the first one simply because there are a lot of improved features to the game that made it feel a lot more fluid later game, and the story this time around had a lot more oomph to it. You star as Mario’s quirky brother Luigi, as he scours this haunted mansion full of ghastly ghouls with his powerful Poltergust 5000 to collect pieces of the shattered Dark Moon, which has a strange effect on the ghosts.

4. Silent Hill 2
- System/Platform: PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Windows
- Publisher: Konami
- Developer: Konami | Team Silent
- Release Date: September 24, 2001
Silent Hill from Konami was the direct competitor to Capcom’s already popular Resident Evil series, but Silent Hill eventually carved its own path in the survival horror genre by implementing a more psychological feel to it all, along with major plot twists to leave your mind blown. Silent Hill 2 brought players a lot closer to the main protagonist, James Sunderland, who was going through a rough ordeal after hearing the grim news of his wife being deceased. All of that spiraled his life out of control which eventually led him to going a bit crazy.
Now without spoiling the spectacular story, the gameplay follows James as he wanders through this very warped and creepy desolate world filled with supernatural creatures that stalk him everywhere he turns. There are times where you’ll need to just run to avoid being killed, while other times you’ll have to take out these ugly looking beings in order to progress. All that we’ll say is that for those who haven’t played Silent Hill 2 will most certainly be in for a grim surprise as the ending is just as scary as the beginning.
3. Siren: Blood Curse
- System/Platform: PlayStation 3
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Developer: SIE Japan | Project Siren
- Release Date: July 24, 2008
Siren: Blood Curse is a survival horror stealth game where you control the main protagonist Howard Wright through this creepy village known as Hanuda Village, and must uncover the eerie mysteries that are taking place. The game is set in various areas of the village, while dead humans known by the villagers as ‘Shibito’ (屍人 - corpse people) wander around wreaking havoc. All of this was caused by the antagonist Mana Kaiko, who has placed a spell on the village to cut Hanuda off from the rest of the world, preventing outside communication and leaving everyone to fend for themselves.
Siren is just as interesting as it’s freakish, since the story tells of this supernatural phenomenon that’s taking place, all being conducted by this one sadistic being who you’re trying to find out more about. The thing about Siren: Blood Curse is that it really requires a lot of patience and thought process because one false move and you’re dead instantly. The scare factor goes well beyond the scale and throws you into the shark’s pit immediately, as you’re limited in resources and so every item you pick up is imperative. It’s dark, gritty, unforgiving, and truly a grotesque experience that’s sure to keep the hairs on the back of your neck nice and stiff as you make your way towards the end.
2. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
- System/Platform: Nintendo Gamecube
- Publisher: Nintendo
- Developer: Silicon Knights
- Release Date: June 24, 2002
Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem is a rare gem from Silicon Knights and Nintendo, since it was a title that was a mature rated title, something that was unheard of coming from the likes of Nintendo. Always striving to maintain a very family friendly image, it was a huge surprise when Nintendo decided to lift the curtains and unveil this classic psychological masterpiece to the world. What made Sanity’s Requiem so incredible was that it truly felt real in the sense that, everything that took place within the game gave off the illusion of things feeling like they’re happening in real time.
One great example that we can remember is that there are moments when you’re walking through a hallway and the eyes of a painting will follow you as you walk, only to freeze in position when you take a second glance. Another example is as you’re playing, the game will flicker and eventually shut off to portray this illusion that something is controlling your television, only to turn back on with you in a different environment. This experience truly warped our brains and still does to this day, so we hope that Nintendo perhaps can bring it back on the Switch as a virtual console title because it deserves the spotlight.
1. Project Zero 2: Wii Edition
- System/Platform: Nintendo Wii
- Publisher: Nintendo
- Developer: Koei Tecmo
- Release Date: June 28, 2012
There’s no other game that truly exemplifies the supernatural realm more than the Fatal Frame series. Not only are you thrown into an unknown environment and have to salvage your way through the very creepy terrain, but along the way you’re greeted with frightening ghosts that seem to pop up out of the blue to visit you. Much Fatal Frame’s greatness lies not in the taking photos of the ghastly beings, but rather, is celebrated for the deep and provocative story that makes the adventure seem even more scarier.
While the gameplay is something to relish in, we simply can’t help but feel abundantly impressed by how Koei Tecmo really incorporates a very strong cultural context pertaining to Japanese supernatural folklore, and creates this very dark and realistic atmosphere that keeps your heart racing for hours on end. In Project Zero 2 for the Wii, which is a remake of the popular Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, the gameplay is still enriching with a few new added features to keep players on their toes as they desperately try to snap as many photos as possible to avoid dying.
Final Thoughts
As we stated in the opening paragraph, the supernatural genre spans across many other genres which always create a new sense of adventure for many. We can’t help but mention Phoenix Wright and the use of spirit mediums to solve crimes, the unforgiving yet satisfying gameplay of Dark Souls II, and the classic Shin Megami Tensei: Devil survivor title. The supernatural anime gaming genre will continue to shine on so long as we continue to support it, so be sure to let everyone know about our articles to keep the community buzzing!
