Top 5 Returning Anime We’re Looking Forward to in Winter 2023 [Best Recommendations]

With all the great original shows coming out, 2023 already seems to be a fantastic year for anime. Add to that all the sequels and reboots of our past favs, we’re almost 100% sure that it’s going to be out of this world! With AoT, Jujutsu Kaisen, and other heavyweights returning with new seasons and sequels, we thought it would be good to put down some of our top picks for returning anime each season; and so, without further ado, here’s our list of Top 5 Returning Anime for Winter 2023!

5. Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha: Shijou Saikyou no Maou no Shiso, Tensei shite Shison-tachi no Gakkou e Kayou II (Misfit of Demon King Academy II)

When fearsome demon king Anos Voldigoad sacrificed himself to end the seemingly endless war between humans and demons, he hoped to return to a more peaceful and hopeful future. However, the demon community spent their time setting up Demon King Academy to identify his reborn self only to, wait for it, misidentify him as a misfit of all things.

When Anos reincarnates two thousand years later, he finds out that the present time seems to remember a very different version of himself (they don’t even recognise him tbh), and so he enrols in Demon King Academy to figure out what exactly went down in those two thousand years of his absence. And well, while we did get some answers at the end of season 1, we’re excited to see what’s next for Anos, Misha, and Sasha.

4. Kyokou Suiri Season 2 (In/Spectre Season 2)

Demons, ghosts, spirits, and their collective Goddess of Wisdom are all back this winter season! Not to mention Goddess's hybrid one-third yokai, one-third yokai, and one-third human boyfriend. A different take on the detective genre, In/Spectre, is a character-driven show that blends together mystery and romance. Kotoko, the human Goddess of Wisdom spends most of her time-solving disputes and issues in the supernatural community primarily with the help of just her own wits. However, when she falls in love at first sight with college student Kuro, things take a turn for the stranger.

Malevolent spirits, hidden agendas, and unseen foes, all topped off with one of the most wholesome relationships we’ve seen in a while—In/Spectre is the perfect balance between darker, high-stakes mystery and heartwarming romantic comedy, and we can’t wait to see where season 2 takes Kotoko and Kuro next!

3. Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. 2 (BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defence. Season 2)

When Maple and her merry band of adventurers crossed our screens in 2020, we found ourselves instantly entranced by the wholesome feel-good vibes of this iyashikei adventure comedy. When novice gamer Kaede decides to dive into the VRMMO game New World as Maple (her avatar), she’s so far removed from what gamers are like that even the mods don’t know what to think. Spending all of her time levelling up her defence (and literally no other skills), she’s become a legend in the gaming world where she can literally take on any foe with her ridiculously OP’d maxed out defence. While the rest of the gaming world are left in shock, awe, and to be honest, fear of her absurd power and apparently unkillable status, Maple just continues to do what she’s always done: play by her own rules as the single most non-fussed anime girl out there.

Honestly, we can’t wait to have her and the rest of her guild, Maple Tree (so, so precious) back this winter season to warm our hearts as we sit back with this relaxing watch.

2. Vinland Saga Season 2 (Vinland Saga Season 2)

Vengeance. War. Turmoil. Death. An epic search for a fabled land. All that, and vikings. Vinland Saga is by far one of the best historical anime to have hit our screens in a while. When young Thorfinn sets off to avenge his more pacifistic father in a time ravaged by war and death, he finds himself on a brutal journey of transformation. In this violent and barbaric world, this warrior’s tale has us at the edge of our seats and we stayed entranced as it stayed true to form with its overwhelming medley of despair, pain, emotion, and bloodshed. The world-building and realism in this story are top-tier (we’d say it’s up there with AoT), and with season 2 coming to our screens this winter, we can’t wait to see what’s next! Atonement? Salvation? The fabled promise land? We can hardly wait!

1. Bungou Stray Dogs 4th Season (Bungo Stray Dogs 4)

Of course, No.1 on our list had to be Bungou Stray Dogs 4! One of the most popular and widely-liked detective series in recent times, we at Honey’s Anime have been waiting for a new season since 2019. Literary-inspired characters with corresponding powers in a gangster’s paradise, what’s not to like?

When homeless teen Atsushi Nakajima finds himself starving on the mean streets of Yokohama, all seems to be lost until he rescues suicide aficionado and detective Osamu Dazai from (intentional) drowning. Before he knows it, he’s got a warm bed, a job, and some semblance of financial security. On the flip side, he’s also got a supernatural ability beyond his control that puts a target on his back, an angsty yet obstinate nemesis (Akutagawa ftw!), and a chaotically good (mostly) gaggle of coworkers.

With badass foes like Mori Ougai and the Port Mafia, F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Guild, Dostoyevsky and the House of Rats, and most formidable of all Dazai— his irresponsible, happy-go-lucky, nuisance, genius, most importantly self-appointed, mentor— this new season is guaranteed to deliver more of the thrilling mysteries, high stakes battles, and truly hilarious character dynamics that made the OG a hit. The anticipation is way too real with this one!

Final Thoughts

And that’s a wrap on our list! With so many great shows coming back this season, we were hard-pressed to pick just five. And while we’re super hyped to check out all the new content rolling out this year, there’s just something oh-so-satisfying in indulging in a new season of a tried and trusted fav; so we can’t wait to see all our favs returning with the new year!

An aspiring animated filmmaker, graphic designer, writer, I’m pretty much a jack-of-all-trades hoping to master some! I’m an artist with a knack for software, so epic fight scenes, campy aesthetics and artsy animation are right up my alley. Webcomics, late-night cartoons, obscure movies, rare books and of course, anime take up the bulk of my free time (and my not so free time too! ). So I spend my days cycling between my anime obsessions and existential dread over my never-ending watchlist.
