About JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Season 1

VIZ Media, a premier company in the fields of publishing, animation distribution, and global entertainment licensing, released the entire first season of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure last month. The release brings us the entire 26-episode first season of the series inspired by the groundbreaking manga created by Hirohiko Araki (which you can also get from VIZ Media!), and bundles the complete Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency story arcs in a Limited Edition Blu-ray Set featuring episodes presented in full 1080p HD, 16x9 video and stereo along with all-new English subtitles made specifically for this release.

The opening season of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure starts with the Phantom Blood arc and is set in late 19th century England. Here, rivals and surrogate brothers Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando discover a mysterious stone mask. The mask is an artifact from an ancient Central American culture and is capable of granting its wearer eternal life but at a heavy price. As the dark powers of the Stone Mask are unleashed, the brothers’ actions will define legacies that span generations.

The Battle Tendency arc comprises the rest of the first season. In this arc, we follow Joseph Joestar, the grandson of Jonathan, in a late 1930s America where he fights the immortal Pillar Men. The Pillar Men created the stone mask his grandfather and Dio found, and they want to take over the world. That’s why Jojo must team up with other strong fighters to face them in bombastic, out-of-this-world battles.

Airing originally in 2012, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has garnered acclaim and spawned a second and third season as well as a couple of movies and an OVA, so this is only the beginning of this legendary series. Both old-time fans and newly introduced ones alike are sure to love the classic rock-inspired masterpiece.

On the Outside

This box set reflects the series’ character design and overall style and comes in a fashionable hinged chipboard collector’s box with purple foil highlights. In the center of the front of the box is our hero, Joseph Joestar in one of the extravagant poses we’ve come to know and love from the Jojo cast.

Inside that box, among other things, is the smaller, plastic Blu-ray holder which is decorated with our main characters against a purple and black argyle background decorated with stars. The material and design of both boxes are eye-catching and even holds that unexpected elegance that is a part of the very manly series.

On the Inside

Inside is where the fun really begins. The Blu-ray box holds 4 discs on dual holders, each showcasing a different character from the first season all in the psychedelic, bright colors the series is known for.

Besides the Blu-ray box, you’ll find a 168-page Key Animation Collection booklet which contains director's commentary, episode summaries, storyboard art and more. If there is anything you didn’t know about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, you’ll find it in here. Plus, you get a glimpse behind the scenes into the making of this unique and well-loved anime. The Blu-rays themselves also have a digital art gallery as a bonus feature to complement all that is included in the booklet. Though little can compare to all the content in that little booklet.

Last but not least, the Limited Edition box set comes with nine collectible art cards showcasing a different character on each side, for a total of 18 gorgeous renditions of the beloved JoJo's characters from the first season in all their one-of-a-kind glory, including Jojos from different generations, Dio, Lisa Lisa, Robert E. O. Speedwagon and more.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a very visually unique anime. The design of everything in this box set, from the outer box to the booklet, to the discs themselves and the collectible cards, really do justice to the overall feel and look of the series.

Honey’s Final Verdict

Though the price may seem a bit steep for some, the bonus content and collectibles are certainly well worth it; and that’s not even taking into account the actual 26 anime episodes included! We were, honestly, very impressed with the quality of every component of the box set, from the hinged chipboard box to the little-but-packs-a-punch booklet, and especially the fabulous collectible art cards that encompass the magnitude of this celebrated action and drama-filled anime. VIZ Media’s JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Season 1 Limited Edition Blu-ray Box Set is an investment that any fan of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, new or old, will not regret adding to their collection.
