Who doesn’t love the speed you can get from a racing game? The feel of driving at erratic speeds and being able to burn rubber without literally destroying your tires in the real world is a wonderful and almost liberating feeling. However, as fun and enjoyable as racing games can be, they still adhere to a very specific definition of how real-world cars or vehicles typically operate. That’s why gamers like us and we here at Honey’s Anime prefer to sometimes play a totally different type of racing game, kart racing.
Now there may be a few of you out there on the internet who have just picked up a game maybe two days ago or maybe even a few hours ago. Thus, you probably have no idea what the difference is between a racing game and a kart racing game really means. Don’t fret if that’s the case and don’t open up a new browser. We here at Honey’s Anime are about to put our teacher uniforms on—maybe we have these in reality or maybe we don’t—and are starting up our class lesson. Welcome students to our article all about What is Kart Racing? No need to take notes either students, we don’t give any quizzes after our lesson as we’re confident you’ll be masters once you finish reading our explanations.
Fun for all ages
Kart racing games are first and foremost a means of getting both kids and adults to have fun playing a racing game. The idea is that unlike most other racing games like Forza or Gran Turismo which require a lot of skill to play, kart racing is for those who aren’t too keen into the simulation style of racing video games. Essentially this just boils down to kart racing games being simpler and more fun regardless of the skill of the player or players. One of the best examples of this comes in the form of the popular Mario Kart franchise but for our Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch. Let us explain Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for maybe the few of you completely unaware of its existence and thus that will help to explain how kart racing games are the best for kids, teens and adults alike.
1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Though for those who want a truly competent kart racing experience, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe delivers with various difficulty settings and tons of ways to make the kart racing just a tad more difficult. Franchises are welcome
Now, Mario Kart is an already well-known kart racing game in the genre but that hasn’t stopped others from using their own franchises in a kart racing title. Two of the popular kart racing games with franchises—other than Nintendo—come in the forms of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and Cartoon Network Racing. While their success—and reviews—have mixed results, fans of these games just enjoy the fact that they can see their favorite franchises be all together in a video game of any kind. That’s why we wish to explore these two interesting kart racing games so you can finally understand without a doubt in your mind what kart racing is all about.
2. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
- System/Platform: PS3, Xbox 360m Wii U, PC, PS Vita, Nintendo 3DS, iOS, Android
- Publisher: Sega
- Developer: Sumo Digital
- Release Date: Nov 16, 2012
Sonic may go fast on his feet but you’re about to see how fast he can really go in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Joined by various other Sega franchises such as Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5 and of course Sonic’s beloved series, players will race their way around tons of different courses. As you race, some courses will have various hazards which will require you to transform your kart into vehicles like motorboats and hang gliders. Will you be able to beat out the competition? Grab your controllers and your Sonic gloves—which aren’t necessary to play—and get ready to race in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is easily one of the most iconic kart racing games to release in competition to the already well-defined Mario Kart series. The fact that Sega unleashed some of their most iconic characters from their more popular brands shows the world they wanted to be known just as well as Mario Kart. Fast, fun and frenetic, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed really does indeed show that franchises other than Mario Kart from Nintendo can make fun kart racing titles. If you haven’t yet tried out Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and are trying to get into kart racing games we do fully recommend picking this up as it’s an amazing game regardless of the console you decide to play it on.
3. Cartoon Network Racing
- System/Platform: Nintendo DS, PS2
- Publisher: The Game Factory
- Developer: Firebrand Games (NDS), Eutechnyx (PS2)
- Release Date: Dec 4m 2006
Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken and Dexter are just a few of the Cartoon Network characters who have decided to enter a battle with one another. However, this battle isn’t about viewership but about who can race the best in Cartoon Network Racing. Grab your vehicles and race through various odd tracks sporting characters from some of your favorite Cartoon Network shows. With over 18 tracks, several shows used and tons of wacky karts, Cartoon Network Racing is coming at you without holding back. Take control of your favorite cartoon and show those around you who the best racer is among the Cartoon Network cast!
Regardless of the reviews—and opinions—of Cartoon Network Racing, it shows the best example of what kart racing is all about. The fact that not one but several franchises are used—just like our past example of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed above—shows that kart racing allows you to play as some iconic characters and just have some laughs. Fun and not serious by any means, Cartoon Network Racing is a game for those who grew up with beloved shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog and or Dexter Laboratory. Here at Honey’s Anime we loved to use Johnny Bravo and here his famous catchphrases while avoiding fire from Dexter in his UFO-like kart. That’s why even though it might not be considered the best kart racing game around, Cartoon Network Racing has a special place in our hearts and we know some of you out there may want to play it for that reason alone.
Final Thoughts
Kart racing games—as you probably are now aware—are very different than traditional racing games out there in the wide world of video games. Less about real life themes and more about action and comedic means of driving, kart racing is meant to be sillier and less like a simulation racing title. Though thanks to this different spin on the racing genre, players of all ages and gamer skill can usually find kart racing an enjoyable experience alone or with friends.
